There is a worldwide lack of data on the prevalence and incidence of sexually transmitted infections in the general population, especially among the high school students. Material and Methods. We conducted a cross sectional study on attitudes and knowledge of young people about sexually transmitted infections. The survey population included young people aged 14 to 20 years attending a high school in the city of Novi Sad. The data were collected through a questionnaire. Results. The percentage of students with signs and symptoms of sexually transmitted infections was higher among the students who did not use a condom during the last sexual intercourse compared to the students who used a condom. Conclusion. Young people engaging in risky sexual behavior showed better knowledge about sexually transmitted infections in comparison to young people who did not engage in risky sexual behavior.

BACKGROUND: Effective solar protection is an uncommon practice among young people, increasing the likelihood of sunburn, sunstroke and skin cancers. This fact is more significant in the south of Brazil, where the prevalence of white skinned population is larger, being more prone to sun damage. OBJECTIVES: To study the practices of sun exposure and sun protection in high school students from the city of Carlos Barbosa - RS. METHODS: Cross-sectional study involving 775 students, enrolled on the first half of 2010, who had signed the consent form. We used a non-identifiable, self-administered questionnaire, with questions about related topics. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square or Fisher exact and t-Student tests. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under the number 2010-115H. RESULTS: Most students are exposed to the sun at the more critical periods, remaining exposed for more than an hour. Five hundred and seventy-six students (74,3%) reported using sunscreen, but less than 10% did it during all months of the year. Female teenagers are most likely to use sunscreen (p <0.001) and to spend less time exposed to sunlight (p <0.001). CONCLUSION: Most high school students from Carlos Barbosa had unsuitable sun exposure and sun protection habits, characterizing a high risk behavior for skin diseases. The existence of public programs for clarification of the risks to the population and the subsidization of sun protection products were suggested by these young people.

Abstract Background: Because of its availability, alcohol has become one of the most abundant substances among young people. It is the teenage age of young people who experiment with alcohol. The Varazdin environment is proverbially considered an area where alcoholic beverages are heavily consumed by the population. This study explored the views of alcohol consumption among high school students. The authors have determined which are risk and protective factors associated with the consumption of alcohol among students. Methods: The sample included students of the entire generation of the third year of high school in Varaždin County (n= 1352). In the bivariate analysis, we used an independent test t-test and a chi-square. In the multivariate analysis, we used logistic regression. Results: 92.4% of students have already consumed alcoholic beverages in their lifetime. We found that most alcohol was consumed by vocational school students, followed by gymnasium students and medical school students. If both the father and mother are tougher and if the mother is more determined, the student will be less likely to enjoy alcohol. The strongest factor affecting alcohol consumption is the presence of alcohol in the father (rarely and often). Conclusions: For the first time, the medical school was included in the study, and the results showed a surprisingly high alcohol consumption among these students. In the study, we also proved that psychosocial factors have the greatest influence on alcohol consumption among students. It is important to strive to maintain healthy family relationships, communication, and family support, as well as to provide a better quality of leisure time. It is also necessary to encourage the development of prevention and education programs in schools.

Abstract Introduction. Alcohol abuse among the youth is a pressing social issue. It is not only related to one’s individual susceptibility to risky or harmful drinking but also the issue of one’s family living with the individual that abuses alcohol. It needs emphasizing that alcohol consumption is on the rise and the age at which young people have their first alcoholic drink is declining as well. Also, girls tend to drink as much as boys. Aim. The aim of this work was to investigate the issue of alcohol abuse among young people of school age and the relationship between the following variables: school educational level, sex, satisfaction with home life and drinking patterns. Material and methods. The authors interviewed some 1444 students of 32 schools (12 elementary schools, 10 junior high schools and 10 high schools) chosen at random, using an anonymous questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed statistically, taking the following factors into consideration: sex, school level, atmosphere at home. Results and conclusions. One’s sex, school level and satisfaction with home life had influence over the respondents’ answers concerning alcohol consumption. The research study shows that students of schools at all levels drink alcohol - high school students drink vodka, junior high school students (gimnazjum in Polish) prefer beer, while elementary school students, who tend to drink the least, prefer wine. Interestingly enough, boys are drinking more than girls, yet girls are more likely to try all types of alcohol. Children who reported good atmosphere at home are less likely to drink, while in case of troubled homes, only every eighth respondent does not drink. The atmosphere at home also affects one’s drinking habits. Most of the respondents have no idea about ways of helping people addicted to alcohol.

Introduction. Alcohol drinking habits are usually formed during adolescence. Adolescents most often drink alcohol to fit in with their peers, but genetics and social modeling are also of great importance. Adolescents who consume alcohol are more prone to mental disorders as well as risky and violent behavior. Material and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among first grade high school students in Novi Sad in December 2017. The final sample included 1,067 participants. For the purpose of this study, the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs questionnaire was used. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program, version 11.0. Results. Beer is the easiest alcoholic beverage to obtain for young people in Novi Sad, followed by wine and spirits. A great number of participants have consumed alcohol at least once in their lifetime and more than half in the last 30 days, (83.5%) and (52.6%) respectively. More than a third of participants had an episode of excessive drinking during the last month. Early onset of drinking was found among one half of male and a third of female participants. Conclusion. These results indicate an unfavorable situation when it comes to alcohol consumption among young people in Novi Sad. Therefore, efforts of the society that encourage healthy development of adolescents are important, as well as taking preventive measures in order to reduce the risk of alcohol abuse among young people.

Male having drinking friends and being invited to drink by friends were factors associated with alcohol consumption, regular drinking, and binge drinking. The amount of money given by family was a related factor to binge drinking, the more money the higher chance of binge. Parents should pay attention to children’s friends, especially the ones drinking alcohol.
