Although corporate capability has been recognized as a key factor affecting corporate acquisition performance, the role of R&D capability in acquisition performance has not been fully explained. The aim of this paper was to research the impact of internal R&D on acquisition performance according to a sample of 215 acquisitions of Chinese listed pharmaceutical companies from 2012 to 2016. First, it was found that R&D has a significant negative effect on acquisition performance. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the acquisition motive and the ownership of the acquiring firm have a moderating effect on the relationship between R&D and acquisition performance. Compared to non-technical acquisitions, the negative effect of internal R&D on acquisition performance was reduced for technical acquisitions. Compared with non-state-owned-enterprise acquisition, the negative effect of internal R&D on the acquisition performance of state-owned enterprises was weakened. Our study enriches the research of the path dependence theory on the acquisition performance of enterprises and also the interpretation of acquisition performance on the basis of internal and external innovation and the institutional theory.

BACKGROUND Online weight-loss communities (OWCs) have been becoming increasingly popular for weight management, which enable individuals to monitor (i.e. self-monitoring) and discuss (i.e. social interaction) their weight-loss experiences. However, there has been limited understanding of the role of individuals’ prior weight-loss experiences in subsequent weight-loss success, especially in online settings. OBJECTIVE To address the significant literature gap, this study investigates the relationship between prior weight-loss experiences (success or failure), online social support and subsequent weight-loss success in the contexts of OWCs based on self-determination theory. METHODS The data of 1650 users from one popular OWC is collected using a python crawler procedure, including individuals’ characteristics (e.g. gender, age, friends, posts, membership duration) and weight-loss diary information. Two logit regression models are deployed to estimate the effects of prior weight-loss experiences and social support on subsequent weight-loss success, as well as the moderation effect of social support. RESULTS The results reveal that prior successful weight-loss experiences are positively related to subsequent weight-loss success (β=0.376,p<0.01) while the relationship between prior failed weight-loss experiences and subsequent weight-loss success is negative (β=-0.225,p<0.05). Meanwhile, online social support can not only influence positively subsequent weight-loss success directly (β=0.441,p<0.01) but also undermine the negative effect of prior failed weight-loss experiences (β=0.025,p<). Nevertheless, social support has no significant moderating effect on the relationship between prior successful weight-loss experiences and subsequent weight-loss success (β=0.104,p>0.1). CONCLUSIONS This study contributes to literature on prior experiences and online social support in the context of OWCs, and provides valuable insights for OWCs’ designs to improve users’ engagement and their weight-loss success.

This paper examines the effect of capital structure and the moderation effect of risk-taking behaviour of insurance firms on performance of insurers in Nigeria from 1995 to 2002. This study became necessary as literatures in this area and regime are scarce. Secondary data from financial reports of each insurance firm were used. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the characteristics of the data while a two-stage estimation procedure of the fixed effect and random effect models were used to test the hypothetical framework of the study. Result shows that insurance capital structure (measured by equity ratio) had an insignificant negative effect on insurance performance while it had a significant positive effect on insurance performance if measured by technical provision ratios. On average, risk taking behaviour moderates the relationship between technical provision ratio and insurance performance. This study focused on capital structure and moderation effect of risk on performance of insurers in non risk-based capital era. Further study on risk-based capital era will provide more on performance of insurers before and after the implementation of risk-base capital requirement. These findings provide important insight to managers and regulators and investors by fostering more understanding of how to manipulate insurance capital and which source of fund should be used to embark on risky investment to attain superior performance. This investigation adds to literature on insurance capital structure, regulation and risk management and insurance performance in Nigeria.

Purpose Organizational networking has been acclaimed as a useful tool for knowledge transfer. However, the demerit associated with knowledge transfer is the leakage of commercially valuable information/knowledge. The purpose of this paper is to empirically establish a useful framework for helping collaborative projects reduce potential knowledge leakages. Design/methodology/approach The study applies a hybrid methodology to collect data. Postulates are tested through SPSS 23 and Process Macro 3.0 model 7. Findings The study finds that knowledge leakage is negatively influenced by contract completeness. Contract completeness has a positive effect on trust and a negative effect on distrust. Partner’s learning intent moderates the relationship of contract completeness with trust and distrust. Trust and distrust negatively mediate the relationship between contract completeness and knowledge leakage. Research limitations/implications The study contributes to the theories of information processing and knowledge management by empirically stating how contract completeness, an organizational structure, supports knowledge management under the influence of partner’s opportunism. The study sees positivism in distrust and explains how practitioners maintain an observatory eye on partner’s opportunism by virtue of distrust ultimately adding value to the distrust literature. Originality/value The conceptual framework is novel because this is the first attempt to investigate the moderation effect of partner’s opportunism on the relationship of contract completeness and relational factors; and the mediation effects of trust and distrust between contract completeness and knowledge leakage.

With the rapid development of economy and the acceleration of urbanization, the garbage produced by urban residents also increases with the increase of population. In many big cities, the phenomenon of "garbage siege" has seriously affected the development of cities and the lives of residents. Sanitary landfill is an important way of municipal solid waste disposal. However, due to the restriction of social, environmental and economic conditions, landfill site selection has become a very challenging task. In addition, landfill site selection is full of uncertainty and complexity due to the lack of cognitive ability of decision-makers and the existence of uncertain information in the decision-making process. Therefore, a novel multi-attribute decision making method based on q-rung orthopair probabilistic hesitant fuzzy power weight Muirhead mean operator is proposed in this paper, which can solve the problem of landfill site selection well. This method uses probability to represent the hesitance of decision maker and retains decision information more comprehensively. The negative effect of abnormal data on the decision result is eliminated by using the power average operator. Muirhead mean operator is used to describe the correlation between attributes. Then, an example of landfill site selection is given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the advantages of the proposed method are illustrated by parameter analysis and comparative analysis. The results show that this method has a wider space for information expression, gives the decision maker a great degree of freedom in decision-making, and has robustness.

Role stress has been extensively studied in organizational psychology and the present study focused on two types of role stress: role conflict and role ambiguity. The purpose of the study is to examine the moderating effect of gender in the relationship between role stress and job satisfaction for software professionals which had received little attention in Indian context. A Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to analyze the data which includes confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), path analysis and multi-group moderation analysis . The results of the study revealed that there was slight increase in negative effect of role conflict on job satisfaction and slight decrease in negative effect of role ambiguity on job satisfaction among female employees. In case of male there was no increase or decrease in negative effect of role conflict and role ambiguity on job satisfaction. This study found invariant moderation effect of gender on relationship between role stress (role conflict and role ambiguity) and job satisfaction. Research implications, suggestions for role stress management and scope for future research are provided.

Purpose Demographically similar individuals often believe they are similar, in spite of the differences in values, beliefs and expectations. However, dissimilar dyads experience will encounter more interpersonal difficulties due to misunderstandings, misperceptions and conflicts of interest. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of leadership expectation gap on LMX quality and the moderating role of ethnic and nationality dissimilarity between manager and their superior on the relationship between leadership expectation gap and LMX quality. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a quantitative research design. A purposive sampling survey of 137 lower-to middle-level managers working under the supervision of Malaysian and Japanese superiors in Japanese multi-national corporations was conducted to test the hypotheses of this study. Findings The study found the following: leadership expectation gap has a significant and negative effect on LMX quality; and ethnic dissimilarity and nationality dissimilarity moderates the relationship between leadership expectation gap and LMX quality. Practical implications There is a need for a comprehensive training programme for both leaders and followers, towards developing their interpersonal skills on how to work better and more effectively in the workplace. Furthermore, prior to the start of the expatriate assignment, organisations can help expatriate superiors to adapt themselves by providing pre-departure and cross-cultural training. Originality/value This paper addresses an important and not so well researched issue. It analyses the moderation effect of ethnic and nationality dissimilarity between manager and their superior on the relationship between leadership expectation gap on LMX quality in the Malaysian context.

Workplace bullying is a well-documented phenomenon that has been associated with a number ofnegative consequences. However, employees face difficulty sharing their experiences of bully and many of such incidents go unreported. We have attempted to make the sharing less threatening in this research by developing some scenarios (depicting bully, extracted from the real-life situations) and asking the participants to 'imagine' themselves in similar situation of bully and feel it then complete a questionnaire for evaluating the emotional state. This way, we would not be able tostudy the direct psychological effects of bullying on employees however, this technique may enable us to see the moderation effect of (perceived) bullying on job commitment. This exercise would be neutral on people who were never bullied but it may trigger the post trauma in people who had been bullied and they may report their emotions similar to the emotions when they were bullied. We asked 290n people; working in different organizations of Karachi, Pakistan; to complete theactivity of imagination, reporting their emotional state, and their job commitment. Instruments used for this purpose included: especially developed organizational bullying scenarios, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule scale (PANAS; Watson & Clark, 1988) and Organization Commitment Scale (OCS; Cook & Wall, 1974). Findings suggested that bullying at workplace is related to both an increased negative effect and a decreased job commitment. If employees relating these perceived bullying incidents to negative emotions and lower job commitment then it may be detrimental in real situations.
