DEVELOPING LISTENING FOR GENERAL COMMUNICATION COURSEBOOK FOR THE FIRST SEMESTER STUDENTS OF STKIP SILIWANGI BANDUNG

 AbstractListening is one of compulsory subjects for the students of English education study program of STKIP Siliwangi Bandung. It is taught at the first semester as a basic for the students to enhance others skills, such as speaking, reading, and writing. In fact, the students face problems in learning listening and it makes the objectives of learning do not achieve well. So, this research is aimed at creating listening course book to help the students learn effectively. This research focuses on listening for general communication. The research employed Research and Development. This method is divided into three parts; introductional study covers need analysis, literature review, proposal arrangements, and prototype;product developmentcovers materials arrangement and course book arrangement;and testinginvolves validation from expert, and revision. The subject of the research is the first semester students of English education study program of STKIP Siliwangi Bandung. The instruments used were interview and questionnaire. Interview was conducted to gather the data related with the themes used in the course book in every unit. There were six themes obtained through the interview. Then the themes chosen were developed based on the material guideline composed by the researcher in the previous research which cover macro and micro skill. Next is validation by three experts using questionaire. The revison covered the content, display and language, then the test was re-taken to gather the feasible of the coursebook. From the computation, the mean score of content hit the precentage of 79.17, while display was 77.78 and language was 77.5. from the resut, the researchers could assume that the course book was feasible and ready to use in teaching and learning of Listening for General Communication. Key words: listening for general communication, course book. This study was aimed to develop humanitarian project-based material for productive written language skills subject for English Education Study Program at UNIMED. Research and Development (R&D) was the design of this study with the subjects of the study were 25 students of first semester students of English Education Study Program at UNIMED. The research procedures were adapted from Borg and Gall’s research theory (1983) namely 1)gathering data and information, 2)need analysis, 3)designing course material, 4)validating and evaluating new course material by the Experts, 5)revising the course material and 6)final product. The instruments of collecting the data were questionnaire, interview and expert judgement questionnaire. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively.. Based on the result of the expert judgement, the whole aspects of developed materials were in the range of 81-100% and were categorized as “very good”.

The research aims at describing the implementation of inductive approach in pre-intermediate structure subject to English Education Study Program students. It describes how the response of the implementation of inductive approach through communicative activities to students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta.The research was done qualitatively. It included some actions. The actions were activities of teaching and learning processes by implementing inductive approach through some communicative activities in the classroom. The subject of this research was the students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The research data was analyzed qualitatively by using deep observation and interview. The result was represented descriptively.The result of the research was that the implementation of inductive approach through the communicative activities can (a) train students to be familiar with the rule of discovery; (b) exploit students’ greater degree of cognitive depth, (c) make the students are more active rather than being passive in the process, (d) involve students to collaboratively do problem solving, (e) involve students to get opportunity for extra language practice.

This study was aimed to improve the students’ grammar achievement, especially in using conditional sentences by applying peer teaching technique. The subject of the study was the third semester students of English Education Study Program in academic year 2017/ 2018. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research (CAR) which had been conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative data (grammar test and questionnaire) and qualitative data (observation checklist and fieldnotes). The results of the test showed that the mean score of pre test was 15, formative test was 35 and post test was 63. The result of observation checklist and fieldnotes showed that the students were interested in teaching and learning conditional sentences by applying peer teaching technique. These indicated that there was a significant improvement of the students’ grammar achievement by applying peer teaching technique.

This research aims to find out the listening comprehension strategies used by sixth semester students of English Education Study Program at University of Bengkulu. The subject of this research is all sixth semester students of English Education Study Program in academic year 2017/2018. This research was using descriptive quantitative as the methodology and the data was collected by using questionnaire as the instrument. The questionnaire consisted of 35 items which represent the use of listening comprehension strategies from cognitive, metacognitive, and socio-affective strategies. This research uses Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 to analyze the data. Oxford’s (1990) rating scheme for strategy use was used to determine the category of listening comprehension strategies use. The result of data analysis shows that students use cognitive, metacognitive, and socio-affective strategies in listening comprehension. Cognitive strategy was used as the most highly use of strategies in listening comprehension with the mean score 3.54 (high), followed by socio-affective strategy with the mean score 3.43 (moderate) and metacognitive strategy with the mean score 3.4 (moderate). From the results, it is concluded that students are using strategies mostly when doing a listening task at the classroom, by using the lexical and grammatical competences also background knowledge to understand the listening materials.

Linguistics Description of English is a new subject in the curriculum of English Education Study Program in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in Jambi University. Hence, the material for this subject is not yet available. Therefore, this research aims at developing a prototype of teaching materials for Linguistics Description of English course. By designing the prototype of teaching materials for this course, the researchers expected that lecturers who will teach this subject will not find difficulties in teaching this course. Besides, the use of materials which have been designed based on students’ need and linguistic lecturers’ discussion is anticipated to be able to encourage students to be more active in teaching and learning process. Thus, the choice of the topics is suited to the characteristics of the students and drew from the result of the need analysis questionnaire and forum group discussion (FGD) with the lecturers. This research utilized research and development design, based on the theory developed by Borg and Gall (1983). The result of the research is the prototype of the teaching materials for Linguistics Description of English course.

Lecture courses in the English Language Education Study Program of STKIP Setiabudhi Rangkasbitung are still conducted in face-to-face class, so the students who do not attend lectures cannot know the pronunciation material at that time, because the Pronunciation course is a practical course in the English pronunciation system. The E-Learning Pronunciation is built so that lectures can be carried out anywhere and anytime without reducing the quality of the teaching and learning process. Therefore, the students who are left behind can continue to follow the Pronunciation course material, as well as habituating students in utilizing communication and information technology. E-Learning Pronunciation is important to be built to improve the ability of students’ pronunciation when doing distance learning, so that students are clearer and more firm in understanding Pronunciation so that there are no errors in English pronunciation. Participants in this study were first semester students of English education study programs. This study uses an experimental research design with the Prototype System development method and system of testing uses Black box testing.

This study was aimed to identify the informality of request as politeness strategies used by the students of English Education study Program (English department) of Unrika Batam.The data was obtained from request spoken by the student of English department students. The data taken based on cluster sampling due the homogeneous data. The data was students of morning class of semester seven. This study concluded that The usage of bu, ma, mah (means mother)  five data and yah, pak, and pa (means father or daddy), the speaker respects to the hearer’s face by addressing her as mom. This considered her position is upper position; this does not threaten her face. This is used informally to her mother in relaxed situation. The usage of imperative sentences are four data when the hearer asks her young sister  to take the glass, then the subject asks her big sister to buy her dress, when she asks her young sister to take chilly and when the subject ask the money to pay rental house. This sentences forces her face’s hearer. This shows negative face. The last is speaker states “adek” young sister to her father means to soften request to her father due to the father will usually fulfill the young child.

This study aims to determine the students’ speaking skill before and after applying Guessing Game and find out the effect of Guessing Game on the students’ speaking skill at the first semester of English education study program of STAIN Bengkalis. This research is experimental research that involved 18 students at the first semester of English Education Study Program of STAIN Bengkalis. Speaking test was implemented in order to collect the students’ speaking performance, and the collected data were quantitatively analyzed. Guessing Game has a less significant effect in improving the students’ speaking skill at the first semester of English education study program of STAIN Bengkalis. This is evidenced by the results of t-o (1,3) smaller than t-table.

ABSTRAK Artikel ini menguraikan hasil analisis deskriptif berbasis model mental fisika terhadap pemahaman kognitif mahasiswa semester pertama tahun ajaran 2019/2020 prodi pendidikan fisika JPMIPA FKIP UNIB Universitas Bengkulu pada konsep kinematika partikel dan gerak parabola. Data yang dianalisis diperoleh dari hasil pretest, lembar kerja mahasiswa (LKM),  dan data hasil posttest dari mahasiswa yang berjumlah 28 orang mengikuti kuliah fisika dasar 1. Skor rata-rata data hasil Pretest adalah  44,64 pada rentang nilai yang cukup lebar yaitu 30-80. Skor rata-rata pada data hasil Posttest adalah 71,42 dengan rentang 50-100. Skor rata-rata pada posttest mengalami peningkatan  sebesar 26,78 atau 60% terhadap skor rerata Pretest. Hasil analisis deskriptif pada data hasil pretest dan LKM menunjukkan  rendahnya penguasaan mahasiswa dalam memahami soal-soal bentuk diagram gambar fisika dan grafik fisika. Tetapi mahasiswa tidak mengalami kesulitan dalam menerapkan rumus-rumus untuk  menjawab soal-soal konsep GLB. meskipun ada sejumlah mahasiswa salah menentukan besarnya percepatan pada soal GLBB. Dari analisis pada posttest menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kompetensi kognitif pada mahasiswa.  Mahasiswa telah mampu menerapkan model mental fisika dalam memahami dan memecahkan soal-soal berbentuk konseptual, diagram, grafik, dan penerapan rumus fisika  pada materi kinematika partikel, dan konsep gerak parabola.  Kata kunci: model mental, kompetensi kognitif, kinematika partikel dan gerak parabola ABSTRACT This article portrays a deskriptif analysis results based on physics mental model toward cognitif reasoning of the first semester in the year of study 2019/2020 students in physics education study program of  the JPMIPA FKIP Bengkulu University on the concepts of kinematics particle and parabolic motion. The analized data were a pretestt, students work sheets (SWS) and posttest data Of 28 students who participated in basics physics 1 class. The mean score of the pretestt data was 44,64 in a range score  of 30.00-80.00. The mean score of the posttest data was 71,42 in a range score of 50.00-100.00. The mean score of posttest increased about 60% compare with the mean score of pretestt.  The deskriptif analysis on the pretestt data and the SWS data indicated that a low kognitif competency among the students in understanding physics diagram and solving physics graphs related problems. But no student faund any dificulty in using physics equations on solving the uniform motion problems. Eventhough some students failed in solving the amount of  acceleration related problems. The analysed results of the posttest data indicated an improvement on students kognitif competency. Most of the students could apply the physics mental model on solving the conceptual, diagram, graph, and matematics related physics problems. Keywords: mental model, kognitif competency, arithmatics particle, and parabolics motion.

<p>The study is intended to develop Writing III Course materials using graphic organizers for the fourth-semester students of English Education Study Program of IAIN Palangka Raya. The Research and Development (R &amp; D) design was employed in this study. It included the stages:  need analysis, description of the purpose, selection and development of material type, production of proto-material, production of pedagogical material, expert validation, field testing (trying-out), evaluation and revision (evaluation from try-out and the expert, and final product. The final product of this study was the instructional materials (six units for nine meetings) covering introduction to the essay (unit 1 for meetings 1-4), the illustration essay (unit 2 for meeting 5), the classification essay (unit 3 for meeting 6), the process essay (unit 4 for meeting 7), the comparison contrast essay (unit 5 for meeting 8), and the cause and effect (unit 6 for meeting 9). Each unit consisted of learning objective, topic, sub-topic, description, relevancy, and keywords. The materials serve for appropriate topics, clear models, stimulating learning, relevant activities, clear example, graphic organizers, and providing strategies.</p><em></em>
