Introduction. This article describes the issues of epidemiologic surveillance of actual infectious diseases in the Moscow Region during preparation and hosting of 2018 FIFA World Cup, as well as a set of measures taken by the Moscow Regional Rospotrebnadzor Office to minimize external and internal epidemiologic risks of infection outbreaks including sanitary and quarantine control at checkpoints across the state border of the Russian Federation at Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky airports. The purpose of the study was to analyze the efficiency of work carried out to ensure sanitary and epidemiologic well-being of the local population, guests and participants of the mass international sports event. Materials and methods. The results of long-term observations of infectious diseases and epidemiological monitoring analyzed to identify potential risks. Results. We gained the experience in ensuring sanitary and epidemiological well-being by Rospotrebnadzor bodies during the preparation and holding of large-scale events, including those with international participation. Conclusions. During the preparation and holding of the World Cup, a systematic approach to ensuring sanitary and epidemiologic well-being was implemented. We organized epidemiologic surveillance for daily collection and analysis of epidemiologic data including the analysis of external and internal risks. The actions enabled us to prevent introduction of infections and prevent the formation of group foci of infectious diseases and emergency situations.

This study looks at the hosting of the 2014 Fédération Internationale de Football Association World Cup in Rio de Janeiro and, based on research drawing on environmental psychology and studies of liminality, hypothesizes that the perceived celebrative atmosphere in the city increases subjective well-being of host city residents (cariocas). Data were collected via in-person intercept surveys from 221 and 218 cariocas before and during the event, respectively. There was an increase in subjective well-being from before the event to during the event. The results of two-group path modeling revealed further that there was a positive impact of the perceived celebrative atmosphere in the host city on residents’ subjective well-being during the event; the effect was weaker (though still positive) for the time period when the event was not being hosted. Initiatives may build upon the atmospheric elements in a city to increase subjective well-being of residents, particularly in the context of event hosting.

The article highlights the basic urban problems arising in cities, hosting major world events during the latest decade. Major sports events become a good accelerator of urban developments and environmental improvements of the city due to the construction of unique objects. One of the most large-scale world events are sports games. In connection with the fact that the World Football Championship is held in Russia this year, the experience of Russian cities in architectural and town-planning redevelopment is of great interest. The author considers the issues of architectural and urban redevelopment of the city on the example of Volgograd, one of the Russian cities in which the FIFA World Cup 2018 will be held. The author of the article was directly involved in the work of interdisciplinary project team as a part of a regional team. The peculiarities of territorial-spatial placement of major objects of the championship in the linear city are defined. Evaluation of infrastructure renovations allowed the author to identify positive outcomes and negative urban trends that have emerged when infrastructure of a global event invades urban fabric of a megalopolis. Among negative consequences the articles highlights issues related to cultural heritage loss. Particular focus is made on future of championship legacy. Urban renovations are planned which allow to organize effective exploitation of infrastructural objects after the global event took place. In particular, redevelopment of master plan statements along with development and land-use rules will be required taking into account the use of championship legacy.

Rabies is one of the most dangerous and socially significant infectious diseases. The city of Moscow is the largest metropolitan area in the Russian Federation with the largest number of pets and a tense epizootic situation. The city of Moscow is bordered by the large-scale Moscow region, which for many years has been unsuccessful in terms of animal rabies. There is a fairly large livestock sector on the territory of the region: hunting farms, animal complexes, personal subsidiary farms of the population and livestock farms of other forms of ownership. This article presents the results of the analysis of reporting data in the 4-vet form: City Veterinary Laboratory, GBUV MO "Tervet Management No. 4", Zhukovskaya Veterinary Station, GBUV MO "Teruvrashenie No. 3" of Egoryevsk Veterinary Station, GBUV MO "Teruvrashenie No. 2" Sergiev Posadskaya veterinary laboratory and GBUV MO "Terrupravlenie No. 1" of the Ruza veterinary laboratory.

In order to ensure epidemiological surveillance and prevention measures aimed at preventing of dangerous infectious diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, the ZikaMap geographic information system was used during the preparation and hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Sochi. The use of this information resource allowed realtime visualization and analysis of data on monitoring the number and distribution of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, monitoring the performance and effectiveness of insecticidal (larvicidal) treatments. The cartographic display of the radius of spread of mosquitoes from the points of their detection made it possible to determine the risks of their contact with epidemiologically significant objects and correct the treatment plan if necessary. The results of the analysis showed the effectiveness of the taken prevention measures (a total of 139 objects were processed on an area of 252.2 hectares). Entomological monitoring data at 692 observation points confirmed the localization of mosquitoes Ae. albopictus on the territory of city cemeteries and in the forest-park zone, but mosquitoes of this species were not found near the epidemiologically significant objects. The geographical information system ZikaMap is a domestic development and can be used to solve various problems of monitoring carriers and vectors for infectious diseases as well as for planning preventive measures.

Orientation: The researchers conducted a literature review to analyse the assumptions of systems psychodynamics, the Tavistock model of group relations, object relations theory and the most relevant constructs in the systems psychodynamic perspective. They then described the assumptions and most relevant constructs in the positive psychology perspective in order to analyse theoretically the psychological effect of large-scale sports events on a community or country. The objective of the empirical study was to investigate some of the unconscious emotions, fears, anxieties and conflicts (dynamics) that prevailed in South Africa before the 2010 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup and some of the positive emotional experiences associated with it.Research purpose: The objective of this study was to analyse and describe the psychological experiences of South Africans before the 2010 FIFA World Cup.Research design, approach and method: The researchers conducted the study from the systems psychodynamic and positive psychology perspectives. The study comprised a qualitative, explorative and social phenomenological study. The researchers conducted interviews with a wide range of their colleagues and clients.Main findings: The results seemed to indicate that South Africans had had a number of positive and negative experiences before the 2010 FIFA World Cup.Practical/managerial implications: The researchers presented the findings as a number of systems psychodynamic and positive psychology themes.Contribution/value-add: This study presents original research that contributes valuable new knowledge to the positive psychology and systems psychodynamic perspectives.

Qatar is one of the few countries in the world with a dedicated national sports day. Qatar believes that sport is one of the best tools to promote a healthy lifestyle to help curb the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). With the well-established positive health effects of soccer on cardiovascular, metabolic, and musculoskeletal conditions, the vision of the FIFA World Cup 2022™ hosted by Qatar to use the power of soccer to “open the door of an amazing world experience” is praiseworthy. With NCDs accounting for 70% of deaths in Qatar, there exists a perfect opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles to prevent, treat, and reverse NCDs. We believe that the FIFA World Cup 2022™ presents an opportunity that could contribute to generating valuable evidence on the lifestyle benefits of such large-scale events. This event comes at an opportune moment for countries in the region to make their health systems lifestyle-sensitive. FIFA World Cup 2022™ could just be the tipping point in the region that establishes the role of sports in mitigating the burden of NCDs. With the impact of COVID-19 on persons with pre-existing NCDs, the urgency for addressing the “syndemic” cannot be overemphasized and sport can be the lifestyle medicine.
