Object: The wide spread of gadgets among modern schoolchildren and their intensive use during breaks in school corridors and recreation areas indicates the necessity of improving illumination in school recreation areas to secure conditions suitable for intensive visual work. Thanks to their technical characteristics, durability and affordable price, LED light sources can ensure the implementation of this task. The objective of the study was to assess the impact of LED lighting of school corridors, halls and recreational facilities on visual acuity and psycho-emotional state of first graders in the course of a schoolyear. Materials and methods: In the corridors and recreation areas of the Dolgoprudninskaya Gymnasium (Moscow Region), fluorescent lamps were replaced by PrLUX-AU-36 LED lamps with Epistar LEDs, opal diffuser, 3600Lm luminous flux, and the color temperature of 4000K. Measurements of artificial lighting were taken before and after installing LED lamps using a TKA PKM 43 light meter. We conducted a study of visual acuity among 67 first graders (aged 7-8) in the annual dynamics from September to May using the Sivtsev-Golovin table placed in the Rota apparatus. Testing was conducted by a highly qualified ophthalmologist. The psycho-emotional state was assessed using the Luscher color test. Results: We observed a significant increase in visual acuity in children over the specified period indicating the absence of negative effects of LED lighting on the organ of vision. The results of the Lusher test proved the absence of negative dynamics, thus demonstrating null adverse health effects of LED lighting in the primary schoolchildren. The studies confirmed that the influence of that light load on vision and its negative non-visual effects were only potential.

Background and Objectives: Physical function is influenced by light irradiation, and interest in the influence of light irradiation on health is high. Light signals are transmitted from the retina to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) via the retinal hypothalamic tract as non-image vision. Additionally, the SCN projects a nerve to the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) which acts as a stress center. This study examined the influences of three different light sources on neural activity in the PVN region using two different color temperatures. Materials and Methods: Experiments were conducted using twenty-eight Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice (10 week old males). Three light sources were used: (1) organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting, (2) LED lighting, and (3) fluorescent lighting. We examined the effects of light irradiation from the three light sources using two different color temperatures (2800 K and 4000 K). Perfusion was done 60 min after light irradiation, and then the brain was removed from the mouse for an immunohistochemistry analysis. c-Fos was immunohistochemically visualized as a marker of neural activity in the PVN region. Results: The number of c-Fos-positive cells was found to be significantly lower under OLED lighting and LED lighting conditions than under fluorescent lighting at a color temperature of 2800 K, and significantly lower under OLED lighting than LED lighting conditions at a color temperature of 4000 K. Conclusions: This study reveals that different light sources and color temperatures alter the neural activity of the PVN region. These results suggest that differences in the light source or color temperature may affect the stress response.

The article discusses the influence of light pulsation on the physiological state of humans and birds, some aspects of its occurrence, the main characteristics and the alleged role in the deterioration of chickens’ zootechnical indicators under the conditions of using light sources with light flux pulsations of different frequencies. The current state of lighting equipment in poultry farming is characterized by the rapid development of technologies and the active introduction of LED lighting. Having undeniable advantages, LED lighting systems have some technical features that are currently insufficiently studied and can affect the zootechnical indicators of poultry. A clear definition of the threshold values of the characteristics of the pulsation of illumination in the poultry house will make it possible to produce lighting equipment for poultry farming with a safe value of the pulsations of the luminous flux of light sources in their composition. The analysis of numerous literature sources has shown that the influence of light pulsation on the physiological state of humans and zootechnical indicators in birds is associated with a complex effect, depending on such characteristics as the depth and frequency of the pulsation of the light flux of light sources. Despite some differences in the values of the threshold impact of light pulsation, the nature of its impact is similar in humans and birds, which allows us to develop and apply targeted measures to reduce the impact of light pulsation on poultry and the deterioration of its zootechnical indicators.

Ornamental plants are often used in indoor environments as part of biophilic design to improve the health and wellbeing of occupants, and to support sustainable, green architecture. Unfortunately, many plants do not thrive and need to be continuously replaced, which is economically unsustainable. The wavelengths and spectrum ratio of commonly used light sources such as light emitting diode (LED), and the lack of an appropriate light dark cycle (photoperiod), appear to be crucial influencing factors. Therefore, this study focuses on determining the optimal action spectrum of LEDs for visually and biologically effective illumination for plants, and humans as end users. This practice-based research study applies critical analysis of literature, photographic evaluation of the appearance of plants under various LED lighting in the form of a visual assessment questionnaire-based survey, and provides various measurements that record the properties of light including correlated color temperature (CCT), color rendering index (CRI), spectral power distribution (SPD), peak light wavelength (λP), photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and daily light integrals (DLI). Research confirms the LED lighting used for horticultural food production cannot be applied to ornamental indoor plants due to fundamental differences in purpose. Such illumination provides fast growth for market consumption and usually makes plants appear unnatural, whereas ornamental plants in an indoor environment should grow at an appropriate speed which reduces maintenance costs and they should have a natural appearance. These new findings, supported by evidence and data, can help investors, clients, architects, landscape and lighting designers, as well as luminaire manufacturers, make improved, biophilic-sustainable lighting design choices.

This study examined the effects of lighting colour on emotional states and the effects of ethnicity on the impact of lighting colours on emotional states, based on the Mehrabian and Russell’s emotional state model measuring pleasure, arousal and dominance. It was hypothesised that there are significant differences in pleasure and arousal among six lighting colours: red, green, blue, yellow, orange and purple and that different ethnicities (i.e. Asian and Caucasian) can influence the effects of the six lighting colours on pleasure and arousal. To test the hypotheses, an experiment was conducted in a controlled lab using a colour-changing LED lighting fixture with 82 participants. The results revealed that there were significant differences in pleasure and arousal among the six lighting colours. Ethnicity had significant effects on the impact of lighting colour on pleasure but not on arousal. Blue was the most pleasant lighting colour and showed significantly higher pleasure than red and purple. Red was the least pleasant lighting colour and showed significantly lower pleasure than all other lighting colours. Asians found red and purple lighting significantly less pleasant than all other colours and tended to feel more unpleasant when exposed to red, orange and purple lighting than Caucasians.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of the Baby Yoga program on the emotional state of older preschool children. Material and methods: 12 children of the senior preschool group. Their medical records were analyzed for the presence or absence of permanent or temporary diseases and the state of mind (mental and emotional comfort) was assessed using the Luscher-Walneffer color test, the technology of which was as follows: the child had to place colors (1-blue, 2-green, 3-red, 4-yellow, 5-purple, 6-brown, 7-black, 8-gray) according to the degree of preference - from what you like the most to what you like the least. Based on Walneffer's work, a certain order of colors ‒ 4–2–5–1–6–0–7 - was taken as an autonomous norm - an indicator of mental well-being. We have chosen a way to influence the psyche through the body - "Baby Yoga" as a set of asanas performed systematically (3 times a week) to soothing music, in slow motion, accompanied by a poetic text dominated by asanas for relaxation and their alternation with short-term tension. Results: After the initial testing of children by the method of Luscher-Walnefer in 5 children out of 12 revealed increased anxiety, emotional stress and fatigue, characteristic of 4 and 5 groups of emotional comfort. The group's discrepancy with the emotional auto norm was 19.6 ± 4.27 points. The necessity of influencing the psycho-emotional state is proved. The "Baby Yoga" program has been introduced to influence the psyche through the body. After 2 months, repeated studies were performed. Conclusion: The dynamics of the psycho-emotional state according to the color diagnostics of Luscher-Walnefer shows that before the experiment the average deviation of the group from the auto norm was 19.6 ± 4.27, after the experiment - 12.0 ± 2.27 points. "Baby Yoga" helped to improve the zone of psycho-emotional comfort in 11 children. The group's non-compliance with the norm decreased by 7.6 points. "Baby yoga" is effective for relieving emotional stress and correction of psycho-emotional state of children in preparation for school. Keywords: preschool, psyche, emotions, autonorm, yoga.

Digital LED drivers capable of blending the spectrum of two LED fixtures with different Correlated Color Temperatures through the LEDs’ power supply control are widespread. However, the digital control of lighting systems is possible only after a careful study of the LED’s response, in terms of illuminance and Correlated Color Temperature. The proposed work takes advantage of the Tunable White technology for the realization of an efficient method for LED light source characterization. In order to evaluate how the light changes as a function of the electric power supplied by the LED drivers, an experimental setup to characterize LED light sources has been designed. Starting from the data acquired from the experimental setup, a model for dimming the LED driver and obtaining the desired values of quality of light has been developed. The proposed model is based on the least squares method and its accuracy is evaluated by comparing the obtained values of illuminance and Correlated Color Temperature with those measured by an illuminance spectrophotometer. Results achieved an error of 0.3% for Correlated Color Temperature and 1.5% for illuminance using the proposed approximation functions.

ABSTRACTBackground:Depression is common among older populations with cataract. However, the impact of cataract surgery on depression in both developed and developing countries remains unclear. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of cataract surgery on depressive symptoms and to examine the association between objective visual measures and change in depressive symptoms after surgery among a Vietnamese population in Ho Chi Minh City.Methods:A cohort of older patients with bilateral cataract were assessed the week before and one to three months after first eye surgery only or first- and second-eye cataract surgeries. Visual measures including visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and stereopsis were obtained. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 20-item Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D). Descriptive analyses and a generalized estimating equations (GEE) analysis were undertaken to determine the impact of cataract surgery on depressive symptoms.Results:Four hundred and thirteen participants were recruited into the study before cataract surgery. Two hundred and forty-seven completed the follow-up assessment after surgery. There was a significant decrease (improvement) of one point in the depressive symptoms score (p = 0.04) after cataract surgery, after accounting for potential confounding factors. In addition, females reported a significantly greater decrease (improvement) of two points in depressive symptom scores (p = 0.01), compared to males. However, contrast sensitivity, visual acuity, and stereopsis were not significantly associated with change in depressive symptoms scores. First-eye cataract surgery or both-eye cataract surgery did not modify the change in depressive symptoms score.Conclusion:There was a small but significant improvement in depressive symptoms score after cataract surgery for an older population in Vietnam.

Purpose A model was calculated during the first Austrian coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic lockdown to estimate the effect of a short-term treatment interruption due to healthcare restrictions on visual acuity (VA) in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). The model was compared to the real-life outcomes before treatment re-started. Methods Retrospective data-collection of 142 eyes in 142 patients receiving repeated intravitreal injections with anti-VEGF at a retina unit in Vienna in a personalized pro-re-nata regimen prior to the COVID-19 associated lockdown, when treatment was deferred between March 16 and May 4, 2020. During the lockdown, the preliminary data was integrated into pre-existing formulae based on the natural course of the disease in untreated eyes in the long term. Patients were re-scheduled and treated after gradually opening operating rooms. The calculation model was compared to the effective VA change. Results The model calculated an overall VA loss of 3.5 ± 0.8 letters early treatment diabetes retinopathy study (ETDRS) ( p < 0.001 [95% CI:3.3;3.6]) on average compared to 2.5 ± 6 letters ETDRS ( p < 0.001 [95% CI:1.5;3.5]) as measured with a mean treatment delay of 61 ± 14 days after previously scheduled appointments. The total difference between the model exercise and the real-life outcomes accounted for 1 ± 5.9 letters ETDRS ( p = 0.051 [95% CI: 0.1;1.9]). Conclusion The herein presented calculation model might not be suitable to estimate the effective VA loss correctly over time, although untreated eyes and eyes under therapy show similarities after short-term treatment interruption. However, this study demonstrated the potentially negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on patients compromised by nAMD.
