The livestock industry has become the most dynamic market globally. This is being driven largely by demand due to growth in purchasing power and modern technology. With the constant improvement of the degree of livestock products trade, the market operation and structure of livestock products are also transformed. The survival and development of the livestock industry are dependent on the comprehensive strength of the whole industry chain, therefore, the study of the technology innovation, supply chain risk, and digital marketing towards the business performance of the livestock industry in Malaysia is required. Hence, the ability to conceptualize, observe and give due recognition to the possible relation amongst these variables in question by the livestock industry, perhaps could bring about an insightful engagement for the betterment of the livestock business performance. This paper does not attempt to provide a comprehensive overview of livestock markets and trends in Malaysia or elsewhere in developing countries. On the basis of this, the relationship between technology innovation, supply chain risk, digital marketing, and livestock industry performance is used in this paper, which improves the whole performance of the livestock industry and enhances international competitiveness.

Managing supply chain disruption needs to be considered an important activity for organizations. Supply chain risk management implies identifying, assessing, monitoring, and evaluating the potential risks across all supply chain members. The process of risk management emphasizes the improvement of supply chain performance through designing appropriate strategies. To be more precise, the chief responsibility in supply chain risk management is to ensure quality performance during crises and disruptions. Hence, identifying and validating risk-relevant factors that leads to superior business performance is necessary.  This study aims to validate the instrument to measure the impact of factors associated with business performance i.e., strategic leadership, business continuity planning, and resilience to disruption. This paper contributes to the literature by developing a comprehensive model that strengthens a firm’s resilience to disruption and leads to superior business performance.

Purpose This conceptual paper details the evolution of purchasing research and describes the increasing integration of purchasing with other strategic functions to identify key trends in purchasing practices together with their implications for purchasing research. Design/methodology/approach This study takes a conceptual approach and reviews prior literature to describe the field and predict future developments. Findings Purchasing is increasingly integrated with different business functions, such as strategy, marketing, decision-making and supply chain management. Key real-world trends include sustainable and ethical purchasing, purchasing in the digital economy, supply chain risk management and public sector purchasing. These trends suggest both avenues for further research and specific methodologies to pursue them. Originality/value By providing a comprehensive overview of the trends in purchasing practice and research, this study offers unique insights, especially for researchers who seek to continue expanding the field.

The Malaysian economy has experienced robust economic growth over the past few decades, averaging around 6 per cent a year since 2000. With competitive pressure for resources from non-agriculture sectors, there is likely to be an inadequate capacity to increase agricultural production. Attaining agriculture business performance continued relevance remains demanding in the Eleventh Malaysia Plan. Anchored in the supply chain management philosophy, this paper highlights cattle businesses and the interrelated elements of supply chain integration and a digital marketing perspective. The cattle meat industry in Malaysia is gradually transforming from unorganized backyard farming into organized farming. However, the supply chains are still characterized by inefficiencies, diseconomies of scale, lack of investments, and inadequate arrangement. Therefore, to improve the efficiency and economy of scale, added value chain is required. One form of value creation is technology adoption. The digital marketing part of technology currently leads to the adoption new business policies in agriculture production. Policies and procedures also need to be eased to facilitate investments to increase production. This paper concludes that, in many important ways, the Malaysian Government still sees food security as a public obligation, especially in the case of protein-based products, and is working attentively to increase food security for its citizens.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a model of congruence for the management of supply risk that is easy to apply, but also accurate. The authors also aim at providing empirical evidence about the relationship between misfit – i.e. the incongruence between a firm’s preparedness in (supply) risk management and the potential riskiness characterising the context – and competitive advantage. Design/methodology/approach – In line with the purpose, literature and field interviews were used to develop a model of congruence in the context of supply risk management (SRM) and operationalise it within a questionnaire. Then, the authors collected survey data to validate the model. Findings – Results show that competitive advantage decreases when the firm’s preparedness in SRM does not match to the pattern of risk conditions (i.e. environmental vulnerabilities). Research limitations/implications – The model of congruence here developed is simple to apply but offer effective decisions support. This study, thus, stimulates future research on the assessment and management of supply chain risk. This study, also, fosters the attention to the non-linear relationship between risk management and business performance. Practical implications – This study develops a model that can be used by practitioners to configure an optimal adoption of SRM practices. Also, the analysis allows to draw some specific recommendations for supply chain managers aiming at improving their preparedness in SRM. Originality/value – By relying on SRM literature, the balanced-resilience logic and the theoretical framework of contingency theory, this study develops and test a model of congruence that shows how companies can gain competitive advantage through the management of supply risk.

Text mining tools are now widely used for the efficient management of information and resources in business, academic and research organizations. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of research articles on the application of text mining techniques in the field of Supply Chain Risk Management and the apparel industry. Research articles published between 2000 and 2020, were obtained from various journals through two online databases, i.e., SCOPUS and IEEE Xplore. Through a systematic approach following PRISMA guidelines, 370 research papers were screened, filtered and finally classified into three main areas: Supply Chain Risk Management and outsourcing in the apparel industry, application of text mining in Supply Chain Risk Management and application of text mining in the apparel industry. In this study, we have identified a comprehensive list of various available data sources for text mining, methodologies and risks associated with outsourcing in the apparel industry. We classify the gaps in expanding the application of text mining in the apparel industry’s Supply Chain Risk Management. Extracting useful information from online newspapers through text mining could vividly enhance the ability to monitor supply chain risks and provide the ability to link data to provide decision makers with the right information at the right time.

PurposeThe enormous impact of the COVID-19 pandemic showcases the key role of supply chain risk management (SCRM) in achieving and maintaining business performance, competitiveness and survival in the “new normal”. The purpose of this paper is to explore what impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had and may yet have on supply chains (SCs), which SCRM approaches have proved successful and how logistics service providers (LSPs) have applied the knowledge they have gained to improve their SCRM practices and resilience so as to prepare better for the next major disruption.Design/methodology/approachThis paper combines an extensive literature review with a multiple-case study of 10 internationally operating LSPs and how they have handled the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic so far. To bridge the research-practice gap, this study draws on the dynamic-capabilities view and provide insights that are valuable to both academia and practice.FindingsThis study provides empirical evidence on the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on SCs, which has posed several challenges to LSPs. The study identifies eight factors that are critical to the adaptive capabilities of LSPs and, therefore, to their resilience in extreme conditions. The findings of this study show that these factors determine whether an SCRM system is robust and agile enough to allow an LSP to anticipate potential disruption and to respond fast enough when disruption occurs. Specifically, this study finds that robustness and agility demonstrably strengthen business performance, while learning from experience proves key to reconfiguring an SCRM design in response to acute disruption.Originality/valueThis paper is among the first to provide rich, empirical and practically applicable insights into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on business in relation to SCRM. These novel insights offer inspiring opportunities for further research.
