The US-China trade war has been considered one of the urgent issues in today’s international trade. In fact, this is a trade war where top two largest world economies participate.  In this paper, we have made an attempt to describe and explain the motives behind this trade war along with the potential threats, causes and effects for the world economy. Comparative macroeconomic analysis of the involved countries has been also conducted. Possible retaliation of China and other countries to the US’ increasing in tariffs on imported goods, protectionism and deficit issues in the US are discussed in the first part of the paper. The authors focus on the potential threats and effects that this trade war may have on the world economy from the political economy point of view. Authors’ vision on the future prospects of the current situation is also presented.

Republican candidate Donald J. Trump, who ran in the 2016 US presidential elections with a slogan “Make America Great Again” defined his foreign policy as “America First”. He set out to balance the long-running deficit of the United States, which led to the US-China trade war. The war not only affected the economies of Washington and Beijing but also it had a devastating effect on the world economy. The first part of the article discusses the concept of a trade war, while the second part analyzes the origins, causes, and course of the trade war between the United States and China, and the trade agreement between the two countries that have temporarily stopped the trade war. At the end of the article, the positive and negative implications of the US-China trade war on the economies of both countries and the global economy will be reviewed. China has been touted as a unique success story in development economics. The world financial crisis of 2007–2010 impacted China severely. Its GDP growth slowed, corporate debts piled up, equity markets became volatile, the renminbi weakened, and its forex reserves shrank in the face of capital flight. This paper analyzes the policymakers’ approaches in coping with the recent external shocks to the economy noted for having rigid economic structures (such as the trilemma problem and privatization issues). It discusses the tough balancing act facing the policymakers and the various reform options, including capital flow liberalization and structural reform. Finally, the paper discusses the US–China trade war.

The trade war, which antagonizes today the United States and China, questions the free trade principle in international trade. To show the dangerousness of this trade war for the world economy, this paper explores the theoretical limits of the comparative advantage principle by analyzing the limitations of the applicability of the comparative costs and endowments criteria. We conclude that the international trade theories not based on the comparative advantage principle are the exception to the rule and therefore, cannot be used to justify the American positions, except to introduce a certain degree of political considerations. Specifically, we show that the international trade theories, other than the Ricardian theory and the HOS factorial theory, are exceptions to the applicability of the comparative costs and endowments criteria. In light of this argument, one should seek explanations of the war-like trade logic of the Trump Administration in the international political economy. In this perspective, international trade is no longer necessarily a positive-sum game.

Attempting to plumb the complexity and depth of the issue of citizenship and values goes well beyond the interface between Europe and Africa. On one hand, in a series of communications at the beginning of the 21st century, UNESCO asked itself, “Where are the values?” On the other hand, the “preferential links” between Europe and Africa are henceforth under the jurisdiction of the World Trade Organization. From this point of view, questioning the political and civic status of men and women in the institutional framework and partnership of Eurafrica, means to ask oneself what destiny is reserved, by the current world economy, to the fact of being citizen. Given the disequilibrium that characterizes Eurafrica, it is only with the active engagement of citizens who vote and participate in a critical civil society that a new partnership favorable to Africans could be actualized.

At the same time, there are weak links that opponents try touse in trade events, such as dependence on certain products or internal trade barriers.
