BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) caused physical and psychosocial problems and the risk of amputations and death. AIM: The aim of the study was to overview the feelings of diabetes mellitus patients with DFU. METHODS: A phenomenological qualitative study design was undertaken from January to April 2020. A total of 25 patients with DFU were determined through the purposive sampling technique. The study was conducted among the patients undertaking home-based wound care in Bojonegoro, Indonesia. The proposed discussion guidelines were used to collect the data through in-depth interviews. Colaizzi’s technique was used to analyze the data and it was managed by NVIVO. RESULTS: We emerged two themes: Psychological and physiological response of patients with DFU and coping mechanisms in caring DFU. Among the patients with DFU, we determined their psychological responses and coping mechanisms as reported in this study. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with DFU are expected to be able to control themselves psychologically. Health workers such as doctors and nurses can provide interventions by considering the psychological condition of patients with DFU. A good psychological condition can ensure that their blood sugar is regulated properly.

Effective cancer communication is crucial for both clinicians and patients, yet is often suboptimal. Health literacy—the ability to access, comprehend, evaluate, and communicate health information—is a latent factor that may contribute to ineffective medical interactions. Limited health literacy has been associated with significant negative health outcomes and higher medical costs. Given the compelling evidence that ethnically diverse populations are particularly vulnerable, we use a narrative case example—a hypothetical clinical meeting between an oncologist and a newly-diagnosed patient—to highlight how patient risk factors for low health literacy (e.g. age, language, distress, etc.) may be amplified by clinician and contextual factors (e.g. using medical jargon, complexity of patient educational materials, etc.). Finally, we re-imagine the same clinical encounter and illustrate how some simple strategies could ameliorate the effects of low health literacy and facilitate communication and patient decision-making.

ABSTRACTBackground: Diabetes self-care is a diabetes patient self-care behavior that includes diet management, insulin use, exercise and foot care. Diabetes self-care has a direct effect on glycemic control in the occurrence of diabetic foot ulcers. The PEDIS score is an examination form that nurses use in assessing the severity of foot ulcers. The limitations of the foot ulcer intervention given by nurses at this time are due to limited data on self-care in diabetic patients. The aim of this study was to determine the self-care of diabetic patients with complications of foot ulcers using the PEDIS score measurement method which consists of examination of perfusion, wound area, wound depth, presence of infection and foot sensation. Methods: This research is a quantitative study, where the determination of the respondents using the convenience sampling technique with a sample size of 125, the data analysis used is the descriptive method. Results: In this study 53.8% of respondents had adequate diabetes self-care and the mean of respondents had a PEDIS score of 2.08. Conclusion: in this study most of the respondents had inadequate self-care diabetes. The value of diabetes self-care can be used by nurses to determine the level of quality of patient self-care so far, making it easier to determine the right intervention to prevent worsening of foot ulcers. Keywords: type 2 diabetes mellitus, diabetes self-care, and diabetic foot ulcers.

Background: Patients with limited health literacy may have less knowledge and fewer resources for efficient access and navigation of the health care system. We tested the null hypothesis that there is no correlation between health literacy and total time spent seeking hand surgery care. Methods: New patients visiting a hand surgery clinic at a suburban academic medical center were asked to complete a questionnaire to determine demographics, total time spent seeking hand surgery care, and outcomes. A total of 112 patients were included in this study. Results: We found health literacy levels did not correlate with total time seeking hand surgery care or from booking an appointment to being evaluated in clinic. Conclusions: In this suburban academic medical center, patients with low health literacy do not spend more time seeking hand surgery care and do have longer delays between seeking and receiving care. The finding that—at least in this setting—health literacy does not impact patient time seeking hand care suggests that resources to improve health disparities can be focused elsewhere in the care continuum.

Introduction: People with diabetes mellitus were at 15% risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers. Diabetic foot ulcers can be prevented if people with DM have the knowledge, positive attitude and thus able to perform the diabetic foot care. The aim was to determine the effect of health education on knowledge, attitudes and preventionof diabetic foot ulcers of people with diabetes mellitus. Method: quasi-experiment research design pretest-posttest control group design. Sample was DM patients who visited the Bangkalan City Health Center, recruited by purposive sampling technique with sample size of 35 people in the treatment group and 35 people in the control group. Independent variable was the health education and the dependent variables were knowledge, attitudes and of diabetic foot ulcers. Data were collected with questionnaires andthen analyzed by Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test and Mann-Whitney Test.Result: The results showed that there was an effect of health education on knowledge (p=0.000), attitudes (p=0.000) and preventive actions (p=0.000) of diabetic foot ulcers.Conclussion: Health education was important as an effort to persuade DM patients to take charge on their knowledge and attitude foot care by firstly enhancing.
