The pursuit to spot abnormal behaviors in and out of a network system is what led to a system known as intrusion detection systems for soft computing besides many researchers have applied machine learning around this area. Obviously, a single classifier alone in the classifications seems impossible to control network intruders. This limitation is what led us to perform dimensionality reduction by means of correlation-based feature selection approach (CFS approach) in addition to a refined ensemble model. The paper aims to improve the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) by proposing a CFS + Ensemble Classifiers (Bagging and Adaboost) which has high accuracy, high packet detection rate, and low false alarm rate. Machine Learning Ensemble Models with base classifiers (J48, Random Forest, and Reptree) were built. Binary classification, as well as Multiclass classification for KDD99 and NSLKDD datasets, was done while all the attacks were named as an anomaly and normal traffic. Class labels consisted of five major attacks, namely Denial of Service (DoS), Probe, User-to-Root (U2R), Root to Local attacks (R2L), and Normal class attacks. Results from the experiment showed that our proposed model produces 0 false alarm rate (FAR) and 99.90% detection rate (DR) for the KDD99 dataset, and 0.5% FAR and 98.60% DR for NSLKDD dataset when working with 6 and 13 selected features.

When adopting cloud computing, cybersecurity needs to be applied to detect and protect against malicious intruders to improve the organization’s capability against cyberattacks. Having network intrusion detection with zero false alarm is a challenge. This is due to the asymmetry between informative features and irrelevant and redundant features of the dataset. In this work, a novel machine learning based hybrid intrusion detection system is proposed. It combined support vector machine (SVM) and genetic algorithm (GA) methodologies with an innovative fitness function developed to evaluate system accuracy. This system was examined using the CICIDS2017 dataset, which contains normal and most up-to-date common attacks. Both algorithms, GA and SVM, were executed in parallel to achieve two optimal objectives simultaneously: obtaining the best subset of features with maximum accuracy. In this scenario, an SVM was employed using different values of hyperparameters of the kernel function, gamma, and degree. The results were benchmarked with KDD CUP 99 and NSL-KDD. The results showed that the proposed model remarkably outperformed these benchmarks by up to 5.74%. This system will be effective in cloud computing, as it is expected to provide a high level of symmetry between information security and detection of attacks and malicious intrusion.

Cloud computing is characterized as the arrangement of assets or administrations accessible through the web to the clients on their request by cloud providers. It communicates everything as administrations over the web in view of the client request, for example operating system, organize equipment, storage, assets, and software. Nowadays, Intrusion Detection System (IDS) plays a powerful system, which deals with the influence of experts to get actions when the system is hacked under some intrusions. Most intrusion detection frameworks are created in light of machine learning strategies. Since the datasets, this utilized as a part of intrusion detection is Knowledge Discovery in Database (KDD). In this paper detect or classify the intruded data utilizing Machine Learning (ML) with the MapReduce model. The primary face considers Hadoop MapReduce model to reduce the extent of database ideal weight decided for reducer model and second stage utilizing Decision Tree (DT) classifier to detect the data. This DT classifier comprises utilizing an appropriate classifier to decide the class labels for the non-homogeneous leaf nodes. The decision tree fragment gives a coarse section profile while the leaf level classifier can give data about the qualities that influence the label inside a portion. From the proposed result accuracy for detection is 96.21% contrasted with existing classifiers, for example, Neural Network (NN), Naive Bayes (NB) and K Nearest Neighbor (KNN).

With winning advances like catch of Things, Cloud Computing and Social Networking, mammoth proportions of framework traffic associated information area unit made Intrusion Detection System for sort out security suggests the strategy to look at partner unapproved access on framework traffic. For Intrusion Detection System we are going to call attention to with respect to Machine Learning Approaches. it's accomplice rising field of enrolling which can explicitly act with a decent arrangement of less human affiliation. System gains from the data intentionally affirmation and makes perfect objectives. all through this paper we keep an eye on zone unit going to separated styles of Machine Learning pulls in near and had done relative examination in it. inside the last we keep an eye on territory unit going to foreseen the idea of hybrid development, that might be a blend of host principally and framework based for the most part Intrusion Detection System.

Cyber security has recently received enormous attention in today’s security concerns, due to the popularity of the Internet-of-Things (IoT), the tremendous growth of computer networks, and the huge number of relevant applications. Thus, detecting various cyber-attacks or anomalies in a network and building an effective intrusion detection system that performs an essential role in today’s security is becoming more important. Artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning techniques, can be used for building such a data-driven intelligent intrusion detection system. In order to achieve this goal, in this paper, we present an Intrusion Detection Tree (“IntruDTree”) machine-learning-based security model that first takes into account the ranking of security features according to their importance and then build a tree-based generalized intrusion detection model based on the selected important features. This model is not only effective in terms of prediction accuracy for unseen test cases but also minimizes the computational complexity of the model by reducing the feature dimensions. Finally, the effectiveness of our IntruDTree model was examined by conducting experiments on cybersecurity datasets and computing the precision, recall, fscore, accuracy, and ROC values to evaluate. We also compare the outcome results of IntruDTree model with several traditional popular machine learning methods such as the naive Bayes classifier, logistic regression, support vector machines, and k-nearest neighbor, to analyze the effectiveness of the resulting security model.

Abstract In modern times the firewall and antivirus packages are not good enough to protect the organization from numerous cyber attacks. Computer IDS (Intrusion Detection System) is a crucial aspect that contributes to the success of an organization. IDS is a software application responsible for scanning organization networks for suspicious activities and policy rupturing. IDS ensures the secure and reliable functioning of the network within an organization. IDS underwent huge transformations since its origin to cope up with the advancing computer crimes. The primary motive of IDS has been to augment the competence of detecting the attacks without endangering the performance of the network. The research paper elaborates on different types and different functions performed by the IDS. The NSL KDD dataset has been considered for training and testing. The seven prominent classifiers LR (Logistic Regression), NB (Naïve Bayes), DT (Decision Tree), AB (AdaBoost), RF (Random Forest), kNN (k Nearest Neighbor), and SVM (Support Vector Machine) have been studied along with their pros and cons and the feature selection have been imposed to enhance the reading of performance evaluation parameters (Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F1Score). The paper elaborates a detailed flowchart and algorithm depicting the procedure to perform feature selection using XGB (Extreme Gradient Booster) for four categories of attacks: DoS (Denial of Service), Probe, R2L (Remote to Local Attack), and U2R (User to Root Attack). The selected features have been ranked as per their occurrence. The implementation have been conducted at five different ratios of 60-40%, 70-30%, 90-10%, 50-50%, and 80-20%. Different classifiers scored best for different performance evaluation parameters at different ratios. NB scored with the best Accuracy and Recall values. DT and RF consistently performed with high accuracy. NB, SVM, and kNN achieved good F1Score.

Presently, the advances of the internet towards a wide-spread growth and the static nature of traditional networks has limited capacity to cope with organizational business needs. The new network architecture software defined networking (SDN) appeared to address these challenges and provides distinctive features. However, these programmable and centralized approaches of SDN face new security challenges which demand innovative security mechanisms like intrusion detection systems (IDS's). The IDS of SDN are designed currently with a machine learning approach; however, a deep learning approach is also being explored to achieve better efficiency and accuracy. In this article, an overview of the SDN with its security concern and IDS as a security solution is explained. A survey of existing security solutions designed to secure the SDN, and a comparative study of various IDS approaches based on a deep learning model and machine learning methods are discussed in the article. Finally, we describe future directions for SDN security.
