scholarly journals An Efficient DWT-DAPM Technique for PAPR Reduction in OFDM System

In this paper, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system is compared with Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) OFDM systems. The channel noise is modelled with A white Gaussian Model (AWGN), the fading is the impairment in the channel and modelled by Rayleigh fading which is frequency selective fading channel and flat fading channel. The comparisons of Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) and Bit Error Rate (BER) are made using modulation techniques such as Differential Amplitude and Phase Modulation (DAPM), Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) and Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM). Simulation results shows that PAPR is 4.497 dB for DWT-DAPM combination, 4.684 dB for DWT-QAM combination and 6.211 dB for DWT- PAM combination at 10-3 Complementary Cumulative Distributive Function (CCDF).The performance Analysis with the combination of DFT, DCT with DAPM, QAM and PAM are also compared. The BER is 0.01816, 0.01806 at 20 dB SNR in frequency selective channel, flat fading channel for DWT-DAPM and for DWT- QAM, AWGN channel BER is 0.01765 at 20dB SNR.

This paper presents a new way to improve the performance of MIMO-OFDM (multiple input multiple output - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) by reducing the Bit Error Rate (BER) using both Convolutional Coding (CC) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT). In this Paper, OFDM system was simulated and studied with three models, SISO-OFDM, MISO-OFDM and MIMO-OFDM. The final system (MIMO-OFDM) has been improved by using CC at a coding rate 1/2 and using a DWT instead of FFT and then using both CC and DWT. The communication channels used in the study are Rician and Rayleigh fading channels and the modulation technique is Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) with 64 number of carrier frequencies. The results showed that the use of both convolutional coding and discrete wavelet transform in the MIMO-OFDM system reduces the bit energy to the intensity of noise energy (Eb/N0) by 3.4 dB as the Rayleigh fading channel is used and 4.6 dB as the Rician fading channel is used when BER=10-3. The results were obtained by modeling in the MATLAB program.

We present the exact symbol error rate (SER) expression for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation in frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel for discrete fractional Fourier transform- (DFrFT-) based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in the presence of carrier frequency offset (CFO). The theoretical result is confirmed by means of Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the performance of the proposed system, at different values of the DFrFT angle parameter “α,” is better than that of OFDM based on discrete Fourier transform.

In wireless communication, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising scheme against the multipath fading channel .However, due multi-carrier transmission , OFDM system has a major draw back of Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) problem that affect the efficiency of HPA in the transmitter side. In the proposed scheme, a new technique is discussed for reducing PAPR in the OFDM system by using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and adjacent sub carriers grouping with companding technique.A computer simulation is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed PAPR scheme.

Due to its good orthogonality, slantlet transform (SLT) is used in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems to reduce intersymbol interference (ISI) and intercarrier interference (ICI). This eliminates the need for cyclic prefix (CP) and increases the spectral efficiency of the design. Finite Radon transform (FRAT) mapper has the ability to increase orthogonality of subcarriers, is nonsensitive to channel parameters variations, and has a small constellation energy compared with conventional fast-Fourier-transform- (FFT-) based OFDM. It is also able to work as a good interleaver, which significantly reduces the bit error rate (BER). In this paper both FRAT mapping technique and SLT modulator are implemented in a new design of an OFDM system. The new structure was tested and compared with conventional FFT-based OFDM, Radon transform-based OFDM, and SLT-based OFDM for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, flat fading channel (FFC), and multipath selective fading channel (SFC). Simulation tests were generated for different channel parameters values. The obtained results showed that the proposed system has increased the spectral efficiency, reduced ISI and ICI, and improved BER performance compared with other systems.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an efficient method of data transmission for high speed communication systems over multipath fading channels. However, the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is a major drawback of multicarrier transmission systems such as OFDM is the high sensitivity of frequency offset. The bit error rate analysis (BER) of discrete wavelet transform (DWT)-OFDM system is compared with conventional fast Fourier transform (FFT)-OFDMA system in order to ensure that wavelet transform based OFDMA transmission gives better improvement to combat ICI than FFT-based OFDMA transmission and hence improvement in BER. Wavelet transform is applied together with OFDM technology in order to improve performance enhancement. In the proposed system, a Kalman filter has been used in order to improve BER by minimizing the effect of ICI and noise. The obtained results from the proposed system simulation showed acceptable BER performance at standard SNR.

Abstract The main drawback in the performance of the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system is the higher Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of the OFDM signals at the transmitter side. Companding is a well-known technique useful for reducing PAPR in the OFDM signal. This paper proposes a new nonlinear companding scheme that transforms the magnitude of Rayleigh distributed OFDM signal of specific degree into trapezoidal distribution. Additional design parameter is used in the proposed companding scheme to make the companding function more flexible. In the designed OFDM system the companding function has more degree of freedom which improves the PAPR and bit error rate (BER) parameters of the designed system. It has been demonstrated that the designed companding scheme provides more flexibility to accomplish an optimum trade-off between the performance parameters PAPR and BER of the designed OFDM system.

This paper investigates clipping and filtering techniques in reducing peak average power ratio (PAPR) of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. The concept of OFDM is to split a high speed serial data into parallel data at a lower speed, then the parallel data carried by mutually orthogonal subcarriers. The high of PAPR is one of disadvantages of OFDM system. The high PAPR can damages the form of OFDM and reduces its performance. The purpose of this study is to reduce PAPR using simulation. OFDM was simulated with and without clipping filtering then compared.  The methods used to reduce PAPR was clipping and filtering technique. Clipping and filtering technique operates by clipping the output of inverse Fourier transform that exceed the threshold. Graphics PAPR vs. CCDF was used to evaluate the performance of OFDM systems. PAPR for OFDM system using Fourier transform when CCDF = 10-3 is 11,2 dB, with classical clipping PAPR was 4,1 dB and PAPR 4,6 dB when with deep clipping.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) usually suffers high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). As shown in this paper, PAPR becomes even severe for sparse source due to many identical nonzero frequency OFDM symbols. Thus, this paper introduces compressive coded modulation (CCM) in order to restrain PAPR by reducing identical nonzero frequency symbols for sparse source. As a result, the proposed CCM-based OFDM system, together with iterative clipping and filtering, can efficiently restrain the high PAPR for sparse source. Simulation results show that it outperforms about 4 dB over the traditional OFDM system when source sparsity is 0.1.

Discrete multiwavelet critical-sampling transform (DMWCST) has been proposed instead of fast Fourier transform (FFT) in the realization of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. The proposed structure further reduces the level of interference and improves the bandwidth efficiency through the elimination of the cyclic prefix due to the good orthogonality and time-frequency localization properties of the multiwavelet transform. The proposed system was simulated using MATLAB to allow various parameters of the system to be varied and tested. The performance of DMWCST-based OFDM (DMWCST-OFDM) was compared with that of the discrete wavelet transform-based OFDM (DWT-OFDM) and the traditional FFT-based OFDM (FFT-OFDM) over flat fading and frequency-selective fading channels. Results obtained indicate that the performance of the proposed DMWCST-OFDM system achieves significant improvement compared to those of DWT-OFDM and FFT-OFDM systems. DMWCST improves the performance of the OFDM system by a factor of 1.5–2.5 dB and 13–15.5 dB compared with the DWT and FFT, respectively. Therefore the proposed system offers higher data rate in wireless mobile communications.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system showed the use of Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT) to perform the baseband modulation and demodulation. So that, it can increase and improve the efficiency of the modulation and demodulation. Currently, the OFDM is being utilized in the field of broadband wireless communication, which transmit signals orthogonally, that increases speed of information transmission. It also has high proficiency with high bandwidth and provide large data rates and robust against the multipath delay spread. On the other hand, there are some issues faced OFDM system which are high Peak Average Power Ratio (PAPR), and sensitive to Phase Noise (PN) and Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO). This paper presents Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) performance evaluation in the presence of CFO with two different environment scenarios were used: an AWGN channel and a Rayleigh fading channel. The simulation was performed to evaluate the effects of CFO based on Bit Error Rate (BER) vs. Energy Bit per Noise Ratio (Eb/No). The results showed that for BER degradation caused by CFO effects have presented in our simulation for both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channel.
