This article presents preliminary findings from a longitudinal study contributing to the current debate about police education and professionalising the police in England and Wales. The findings in this article are taken from a survey administered in 2016 to third-year students enrolled in a policing degree. Surveys were distributed to police officer students in the last year of their degree programme asking for their perceptions of the degree, their organisation's support for their learning and how they felt that learning was utilised in their workplace. Supplementary to the survey, interviews were conducted with the students after their graduation in 2018. The research findings suggest that students perceived the benefits of obtaining a degree-level qualification as fundamentally important to their professional development and personal decision-making at work. Early support initially received for study leave purposes, rarely extended beyond this practical provision. The extent to which police organisations valued the learning from the degree was perceived to be lacking. Senior-ranked students were more likely to be able to use and promote their newly acquired skills and knowledge in the workplace compared with lower-ranked students. Such findings may inform scholars’ and practitioners’ continued evaluation of police education reforms in England and Wales.

The causes of maritime accidents are complex, mostly due to the coupling of four types of factors: human-ship-environmental-management. To effectively analyze the causes of maritime accidents in China, and reveal the risk coupling characteristics of accidents, this paper establishes the N-K model of maritime accident, and calculates and analyzes the four types of coupling of risk factors affecting safety in maritime traffic. This paper collects 922 maritime accidents that occurred in China from 2000 to 2020, and analyzes the location, type, and level of accidents and uses the trigger principle to describe the process of accidents. For marine and inland river accidents, this paper calculates the four types of coupling values of risk factors (single-factor coupling, two-factor coupling, three-factor coupling, four-factor coupling) for comparison and analysis. In addition, this paper calculates the coupling values of six typical maritime accidents of collision, sinking, contact, fire/explosion, stranding, grounding. According to the coupling values and the frequency of sub-factors, this paper analyzes the coupling characteristics of maritime accidents. The results show that in maritime accidents, as the number of risk factors participating in the coupling increases, the coupling value increases, and the multi-factor coupling is more likely to cause accidents. The overall situation of risk coupling causes of maritime accidents is basically consistent with inland river accidents, but they have their own characteristics in the specific degree of risk coupling and the dominant risk elements. In different types of maritime accidents, the risk coupling has different characteristics, and the dominant risk factors are also different.

Semi-autonomous (SA) control of upper-limb prostheses can improve the performance and decrease the cognitive burden of a user. In this approach, a prosthesis is equipped with additional sensors (e.g., computer vision) that provide contextual information and enable the system to accomplish some tasks automatically. Autonomous control is fused with a volitional input of a user to compute the commands that are sent to the prosthesis. Although several promising prototypes demonstrating the potential of this approach have been presented, methods to integrate the two control streams (i.e., autonomous and volitional) have not been systematically investigated. In the present study, we implemented three shared control modalities (i.e., sequential, simultaneous, and continuous) and compared their performance, as well as the cognitive and physical burdens imposed on the user. In the sequential approach, the volitional input disabled the autonomous control. In the simultaneous approach, the volitional input to a specific degree of freedom (DoF) activated autonomous control of other DoFs, whereas in the continuous approach, autonomous control was always active except for the DoFs controlled by the user. The experiment was conducted in ten able-bodied subjects, and these subjects used an SA prosthesis to perform reach-and-grasp tasks while reacting to audio cues (dual tasking). The results demonstrated that, compared to the manual baseline (volitional control only), all three SA modalities accomplished the task in a shorter time and resulted in less volitional control input. The simultaneous SA modality performed worse than the sequential and continuous SA approaches. When systematic errors were introduced in the autonomous controller to generate a mismatch between the goals of the user and controller, the performance of SA modalities substantially decreased, even below the manual baseline. The sequential SA scheme was the least impacted one in terms of errors. The present study demonstrates that a specific approach for integrating volitional and autonomous control is indeed an important factor that significantly affects the performance and physical and cognitive load, and therefore these should be considered when designing SA prostheses.

<p>This is a study of the distribution of 2011 instances of simultaneous speech in a 91,802-word subcorpus from the London-Lund corpus of Spoken English. Five categories of simultaneous speech (successful and unsuccessful turn-bidding, successful and unsuccessful turn-competing, and backchannelling) were analysed in terms of: (a) characteristics of the prosodic, lexical and grammatical context in which simultaneous speech occurs; (b) linguistic devices and strategies in aspects of prosody, discourse and pragmatics which are frequently used to introduce simultaneous speech; (c) variables such as speech domain, degree of familiarity between interlocutors, speakers' status and gender which may influence the frequency of simultaneous speech and affect the occurrence of the linguistic features and devices associated with simultaneous speech. In a complementary case study, 288 instances of simultaneous speech in Chinese (Cantonese) were also analysed in a 10385-word sample of Chinese conversation, and compared with simultaneous speech in English. The findings of the study show: (a) Simultaneous speech is rule-governed and context-constrained. It is most likely to occur at a unit boundary which is prosodically, lexically and syntactically marked. It is often introduced and carried out by a number of prosodic devices, discourse items and repetition strategies. This is particularly the case in turn-bidding and turn-competition. (b) Frequency of simultaneous speech seems to be strongly associated with degree of formality of speech domain and degree of familiarity between interlocutors, but loosely related to speakers' status and gender. However, particular linguistic devices and strategies seem more preferred by interlocutors in a specific speech domain, or with a specific degree of familiarity, or having specific status or gender. (c) Chinese and English simultaneous speech share many similarities in terms of pragmatic functions, and linguistic devices and strategies employed, though equivalents between the two languages are not always found. However social constraints on turn-bidding seem different in the two languages especially in terms of age, status and gender. The descriptive findings of the study help explain why Chinese learners of English find it difficult to take a turn in English conversation, and especially to bid for a turn. Thus the study enhances our awareness of the linguistic features of English conversation and the factors which can affect Chinese students' pragmatic and discourse competence. Moreover, the computer corpus approach adopted in the research provides a way of obtaining rich input for teaching English discourse devices in terms of prosody, lexicon and syntax and suggests further applications of corpus-based research in the study of language teaching and learning.</p>

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to evaluate the possibility of using SLM additive technology to produce structures with specific surface morphological features. Qualitative and quantitative tests were conducted on samples fabricated by 3D printing from titanium (Ti6Al4V)-powder-based material and analysed in direct relation to the possibility of their use in medicine for the construction of femoral stem and models with a specific degree of porosity predicted by process-control in the self-decision-making 3D printing machine. This paper presents the results of the study, limitations of the method, recommendations that should be used in the design of finished products, and design proposals to support the fabrication process of 3D printers. Furthermore, the study contains an evaluation of how the printing direction affects the formation of certain structures on the printed surface. The research can be used in the development of 3D printing standardization, particularly in the consideration of process control and surface control.

This research aimed to present the learning styles according to the model of Alonso, Gallego and Honey in university students of the Faculty of Education within the University of the Basque Country (Spain). With that objective, a sample of 434 students was chosen. The Honey-Alonso Learning Styles (CHAEA) questionnaire was used. The data obtained reflect that the four learning styles proposed by Kolb are distributed in a balanced way among the participating sample; they also reflect that it is not possible to attribute a specific learning style to a specific Degree, except with active learning and Early Childhood Education.

Rapid technological developments and the increasing complexity of matrix work are increasing interest in finding robust technical solutions and fast and assertive data analysis. The data can be filtered to obtain spectral data in more useful spectral bands, the developed algorithms allow quantification of the spectral mixture, and it can be measured with or without titration. We focused in this study is on samples within the range of wavelengths (459,466,462,464 nm), different strategies are utilized to check Aromatic compounds. These enable us to survey a specific degree of ordinary compounds, much the same as benzene, toluene and xylene, and so on. In this study compares data analysis, received from sensor between A polynomial approximation PolyFit method and Processors Gases method, and compares the results of each, a method with the multivariate curve resolve - alternate least squares (MCR - ALS) regression strategy of analyzing spectral data of information with a different concentration. Additionally, adequately moo deviations of the anticipated values were accomplished from the genuine values, the standard deviation. And, the amended range was normalized to their region and to some degrees smooth. The autofluorescence establishment was subtracted, for the pure extend investigation, by utilizing logical approaches.

Our understanding on how widespread reproductive senescence is in the wild and how the onset and rate of reproductive senescence vary among species in relation to life histories and lifestyles is currently limited. More specifically, whether the species-specific degree of sociality is linked to the occurrence, onset and rate of reproductive senescence remains unknown. Here, we investigate these questions using phylogenetic comparative analyses across 36 bird and 101 mammal species encompassing a wide array of life histories, lifestyles and social traits. We found that female reproductive senescence: (i) is widespread and occurs with similar frequency (about two-thirds) in birds and mammals; (ii) occurs later in life and is slower in birds than in similar-sized mammals; (iii) occurs later in life and is slower with an increasingly slower pace of life in both vertebrate classes; and (iv) is only weakly associated, if any, with the degree of sociality in both classes after accounting for the effect of body size and pace of life. However, when removing the effect of species differences in pace of life, a higher degree of sociality was associated with later and weaker reproductive senescence in females, which suggests that the degree of sociality is either indirectly related to reproductive senescence via the pace of life or simply a direct outcome of the pace of life.
