ABSTRACTFor the last several years, we have been developing and characterizing “mobile” micro- and nano-instruments for use on-site (e.g., in the field). Although such portable, battery-operated instruments are much smaller that their laboratory-scale counterparts, sometimes they provide comparable performance and they often offer improved capabilities. As such, they are expected to cause a paradigm shift in classical chemical analysis by allowing practioners to “bring the lab (or part of it) to the sample”. Two classes of examples will be used as the means with which to illustrate the power of micro- and nano-instruments. One class involves a “patient” as the sample and an ingestible capsule-size spectrometer used for cancer diagnosis of the gastro intestinal tack as (part of) “the lab”. The other involves the “environment” as the sample and a portable, battery-operated, miniaturized instrument that utilizes a PalmPilot™ with a wireless interface for data acquisition and signal processing as (part of) “the lab”. To discuss how to electrically power such miniaturized instruments, mobile energy issues will be addressed. Particular emphasis will be paid to current or anticipated future applications and to the paradigm shifts that may prove essential in powering the next generation of miniaturized instruments.

Sleep, food and language are pillars of children’s healthy lives, are intertwined from birth and make up the dynamic structure of child development. These are the effects of interdependent conditions: organic, psychic and social, which involve the child and result, simultaneously, from organic and symbolic inheritances. The latter overdetermines and modulates the interaction of the child with the environment, especially with the other human who is there. This heritage will draw patterns of conduct and behavior that can often contribute to changes that compromise, to some extent, the overall development of the child. In the children’s clinic, the description of developmentdisorders, from the mildest to the most severe, includes, as a rule, food, sleep and language aspects, which suggests, then, a base triad, questioning clinicians as to the possibility of there being, more than a simple coincidence, a correlation between fundamental biological functions. If this is the case, it will be important for the clinician to appropriate this perspective, since the implication will probably determine particularities in the diagnostic and treatment procedures. In this direction, it is worth deepening and discussing the development of these functions (sleep, diet, language), seeking to clarify their constitutive correlation, the link between them.

Target localization and tracking has always been a hot topic in all eras of communication studies. Conventional system used radars for the purpose of locating and/or tracking an object using the classical methods of signal processing. Radars are generally classified as active and passive, where the former uses both transmitter and receivers simultaneously to perform the localization task. On the other hand, passive radars use existing illuminators of opportunity such as wi-fi or GSM signals to perform the aforementioned tasks. Although they perform detection using classical correlation methods and CFAR, recently machine learning has been used in various application of passive sensing to elevate the system performance. The latest developed models for intelligent RF passive sensing system for both outdoor and indoor scenarios are discussed in this chapter, which will give insight to the readers about their designing.

In the present political moment, “border walls” between the U.S. and Mexico have become a flashpoint, representing binaries like governed / ungoverned spaces, security / insecurity, morality / immorality, respect / disrespect for human rights, human unity / disunity, North / South, haves / have-nots, citizens / non-citizens, Republicans / Democrats, conservatives / liberals, patriots / traitors, nationalists / internationalists (or globalists), and others. This work explores some of the thematic Global North – Global South implications of a notional “border wall” based on social imagery (in a multi-loop image analysis approach). This work questions how the “other” may be viewed through the limiting slats of a fence or windows in a wall. In addition to the image analyses, topic-related textual data will also be studied from various sources: academia, journalism, and social media (including mass search correlations, big data word search, related tags networks, and #hashtag network analysis).

This chapter focuses on the issue of transaction tracking in multimedia distribution applications through digital watermarking terminology. The existing watermarking schemes are summarized and their assumptions as well as the limitations for tracking are analyzed. In particular, an Independent Component Analysis (ICA)-based watermarking scheme is proposed, which can overcome the problems of the existing watermarking schemes. Multiple watermarking technique is exploited—one watermark to identify the rightful owner of the work and the other one to identify the legal user of a copy of the work. In the absence of original data, watermark, embedding locations and strengths, the ICA-based watermarking scheme is introduced for efficient watermark extraction with some side information. The robustness of the proposed scheme against some common signal-processing attacks as well as the related future work are also presented. Finally, some challenging issues in multimedia transaction tracking through digital watermarking are discussed.

Medical studies reveal how we form sounds and tone quality, and modern electronic signal processing shows the complexity of the harmonic content of singing. The changes between sweetness, harshness, carrying power, and so on, all depend on not just volume, but the fundamental note and its harmonics, plus all the other frequencies generated in our vocalization. One fundamental may have 50 or more other frequencies. This signal processing tool is invaluable for understanding voice production.

Complex signal-processing problems are naturally described by compositions of program modules that process streams of data. In this article we discuss how such compositions may be analyzed and mapped onto multiprocessor computers to effectively exploit the massive parallelism of these applications. The methods are illustrated with an example of signal processing for an optical surveillance problem. Program transformation and analysis are used to construct a program description tree that represents the given computation as an acyclic interconnection of stream-processing modules. Each module may be mapped to a set of threads run on a group of processing elements of a target multiprocessor. Performance is considered for two forms of multiprocessor architecture, one based on conventional DSP technology and the other on a multithreaded-processing element design.

This paper presents an investigation into the extent to which the lexical choices made by different poets are distinctive. When a writer, writes, s/he makes lexical choices that make them different from other writers and the writing to some extent can be considered as their fingerprint or in the other word their signature. Authorship analysis by means of textual measurements has been the interest of so many linguists. Authors have their own styles and the stylometrist is interested in finding units which can distinct authors from each other. Statistical analysis has provided different tools for this attempt, by different scholars. Over the past 3 centuries many types of textual tools has been introduced to discriminate different authors objectively that developing in computer programing has played the important role for using these models. In this study by writing a computer program, the styles of different Iranian poets, Attar and Molavi, and Nezami, are investigated in terms of their word length and word richness. Result shows differences between their styles in terms of these parameters. This way of analyzing writing of different authors has some implications in different field of sociolinguistic and TOEFL.
