Patients presenting with alleged scorpion envenomation is a common presentation in rural tertiary hospitals. The clinical prole of scorpion envenomation has been well established. However, data on the electrocardiographic changes in scorpion envenomation, particularly of patients presenting to a south Indian rural tertiary hospital are scant. In this cross-sectional study of 90 patients presenting to our hospital, we describe the electrocardiographic ndings of patients with scorpion envenomation. Data on correlation between severity of scorpion envenomation and ECG changes are also presented. The clinical prole of scorpion envenomation is varied, in its severity and by the type of scorpion, hence, the ECG may be a cheap and simple tool to detect warning signs early to initiate timely and appropriate management

Background: Determination of the electrocardiographic changes among the hypertensive patients can reveal the early cardiac abnormalities. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to find out the common electrocardiographic (ECG) changes in different grades of hypertensive patients. Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted among mild to severe grade hypertensive patients attended in the Department of Medicine at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital, Rajshahi during the period of July 2009 to June 2010 for a period of one year. Data were collected by face to face interview with a pre-designed structured questionnaire. Measurement of the blood pressure and the 12-lead surface electrocardiogram were done among the study group in a resting state. Results: A total number of 400 mild to severe grade hypertensive patients were recruited for this study of which male was 300 cases and female were 100 cases. The age ranges was 30 to 60 years, Among 400 hypertensive patients, abnormal electrocardiographic changes were found in 212(53%) patients. Among the mild, moderate and severe cases, the changes were 38.8%, 65% and 100% respectively. Conclusions: There is an association between hypertension and ECG changes which is more pronounced in severe hypertension.Journal of Science Foundation, January 2016;14(1):26-29

Background: Several kinds of motor dysfunction can predict future cognitive impairment in elderly individuals. However, the ability of the fine motor index (FINEA) and gross motor index (GROSSA) to predict the risk of cognitive impairment has not been assessed. Objective: We investigated the associations between FINEA/GROSSA and cognitive impairment. Methods: The data of 4,745 participants from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) were analyzed. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We first assessed the correlation between the FINEA GROSSA and MMSE in a cross-sectional study. Then, we further investigated the predictive role of the incidence of cognitive impairment in a prospective cohort study. Results: We found that both FINEA and GROSSA were negatively correlated with MMSE in both the unadjusted (FINEA: B = –1.00, 95%confidence intervals (CI): –1.17, –0.83, t = –11.53, p <  0.001; GROSSA: B = –0.85, 95%CI: –0.94, –0.76, t = –18.29, p <  0.001) and adjusted (FINEA: B = –0.63, 95%CI: –0.79, –0.47, t = –7.77, p <  0.001; GROSSA: B = –0.57, 95%CI: –0.66, –0.48, t = –12.61, p <  0.001) analyses in a cross-sectional study. In a prospective cohort study, both high FINEA and high GROSSA were associated with an increased incidence of cognitive function impairment (FINEA: adjusted odds ratios (OR) = 2.35, 95%CI: 1.05, 5.23, p = 0.036; GROSSA adjusted OR = 3.00, 95%CI: 1.49, 6.03, p = 0.002) after 2 years of follow-up. Conclusion: Higher FINEA and GROSSA scores were both associated with an increased incidence of cognitive impairment. FINEA or GROSSA might be a simple tool for identifying patients with cognitive impairment.

Objective: Renal volume (RV) assessment during obstetric sonography is rarely considered in our locality. Understanding the changes in RV in both normotensive pregnant (NP) and pregnancy-induced hypertensive (PIH) women is important in making correct diagnosis regarding pregnancy outcome. This study is aimed at determining the RV in NP and PIH women and correlating RV with fetal gestational age (FGA), body mass index (BMI), and parity in NP women. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 450 patients recruited at a Tertiary Hospital. A pilot study was done to determine the interobserver variability in RV measurement. RV was calculated using the following formula: L × W × AP × 0.523. Parity, BMI, and blood pressure were documented, while FGA was calculated as an average of FGAs obtained from the measurements of fetal biometric parameters. Results: Mean RV of PIH women was significantly higher than that of NP women ( P < .05). RV shows a positive significant relationship with BMI and FGA, while it shows a negative relationship with parity in NP ( P < .05). Conclusion: Reference range values of RV were generated for clinical use in our locality, while there is statistically significant difference between RV in NP and PIH women.

Background: The present study highlights the occurrence of Incidental gallbladder carcinoma (IGBC) detected during histopathological examination in cholecystectomy specimens removed for cholelithiasis. Methods- This is a tertiary hospital based cross-sectional study of 500 cholecystectomy specimens removed during cholelithiasis. Relevant hospital records, histopathology slides and reports were reviewed, re-evaluated and studied. Results: 4(0.80%) cases of incidental gall bladder carcinoma (IGBC) were diagnosed from the histopathological evaluation (HPE) of 500 cholecystectomy specimens, constituting 0.80% of gall bladder specimens received during the study period. The age of the patients with IGBC ranged from 51-80 years. More females were affected than males with a M:F ratio of 1:3. Conclusion: Early detection of IGBC by histopathological examination would have a favourable impact on prognosis and management thereby increasing the survival outcome. SUMMARY BACKGROUND The Medical Control Program for Occupational Health establishes the required supplementary exams, according to the activity exercised by the worker and its inherent risks. The Regulatory Norm No. 35, recently deployed, stipulates that at-height workers must undergo electrocardiogram exams as an additional routine examination. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the electrocardiographic standard in at-height. METHODOLOGY A cross-sectional study, developed from May 2014 to January 2015 with male at-height workers. Anthropometric and clinical data were collected after the electrocardiogram (ECG). The workers included in the program were evaluated by an occupational medicine service of Serra Gaúcha, responsible for medical assessment and occupational tests. All workers were assessed by the researcher. RESULTS A total of 561 at-height workers participated in the study. The average age was 35.9 ± 12.2 years. A total of 176 (31%) presented electrocardiographic changes in the analysis of the resting ECG. Regarding the amendments in the resting ECG, 15.7% were attributed to changes in ventricular repolarization, 8% as blocks conductions, and 5.8% as left ventricular overload. Demographic variables were not associated with changes in the electrocardiographic tracing CONCLUSION This study demonstrated the electrocardiographic alterations and the profile of at-height workers. These findings can help determine prevention strategies and provide warnings of possible future harms to the health of these workers.
