Seizures represent signal of neurological disease in the newborn period and these convulsive phenomena are the most frequent of the overt manifestation of neonatal neurological disorders.. The objective of this study was to study the incidence of pediatrics (0-12 years) seizures. To study the etiology and pattern of seizures. Methods: 200 Subjects who had seizures were included in the study. Relevant history was ascertained from a patient’s parents or a reliable relative or attendant, medical records and the referring physicians note, specifically from mother in case of neonatal seizures i.e. age at onset of seizures, seizure activity with special emphasis on occurrence of 1st seizures, duration of seizures, number and type of seizures, associated autonomic changes, medications required to control seizures, response time to medications, and possible causes for determination of etiology. A detailed antenatal, natal and postnatal history was taken. Results: Out of 200 study subjects 35.89% were in neonatal age group, of which 64.10% and 35.90% were male and female respectively and 64.11%. out of neonatal seizures, 64.10% neonates were male and 35.90% were female. Male: Female ratio was 1.79:1. The seizures were common in male neonates. Subtle seizures were the commonest type of seizures observed both in term and preterm neonates. Conclusions: The various types of seizure were compared with the preterm and term neonates and it was found statistically significant

Recognition and classification of seizures remain problematic; particularly when pediatricians rely only on clinical criteria. The objective of this study was to study the incidence of pediatrics (0-12 years) seizures. To study the etiology and pattern of seizures.Methods: 326 Subjects who had seizures were included in the study. Relevant history was ascertained from a patient’s parents or a reliable relative or attendant, medical records and the referring physicians note, specifically from mother in case of neonatal seizures i.e. age at onset of seizures, seizure activity with special emphasis on occurrence of 1st seizures, duration of seizures, number and type of seizures, associated autonomic changes, medications required to control seizures, response time to medications, and possible causes for determination of etiology. A detailed antenatal, natal and postnatal history was taken.Results: Out of 326 study subjects 117 (35.89%) were in neonatal age group, of which 75 (64.10%) and 42 (35.90%) were male and female respectively and 209 (64.11%) were beyond neonatal age, out of which 125 (59.8%) were male and 84 (40.2%) female. out of 117 neonatal seizures, 75 (64.10%) neonates were male and 42 (35.90%) were female. Male: Female ratio was 1.79:1. The seizures were common in male neonates. Subtle seizures were the commonest type of seizures observed both in term and preterm neonates.Conclusions: The various types of seizure were compared with the preterm and term neonates and it was found statistically significant (X2 = 5.06 d.f. = 4, p<0.05). The various causes of seizure were compared with the preterm and term neonates and it was found statistically significant (X2= 17.42 d.f. = 6 p<0.05).

Objective: Epilepsy or seizure disorder is a common neurologic disorder in the pediatric age group and occurs with a frequency of 4-6 cases per thousand children. Epilepsy, particularly childhood epilepsy, remains a challenge to treat. The management of epilepsy is primarily based on theuse of anti-epileptic drugs. Surgery and diet therapy are the other modes of treating childhood seizures. To get an insight into the utilization pattern of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) used in pediatric seizures.Methods: This prospective, longitudinal study was conducted for a period of 8months in Paediatric Neurology Department of a tertiary care teaching hospital. The data collected from 50 children at the end of the study, were compiled in a specially designed data form and were analyzed.Results: The distribution of paediatric seizures was found to be high in male children (62%) and in the age group of 2 to 5 y (46%). The majority of the children (70%) were diagnosed with Generalized Tonic-clonic seizures. Sodium valproate was the commonly prescribed AED in all forms of seizures followed by Carbamazepine (18%), Phenobarbitone (4%) and Phenytoin Sodium (4%). AEDs were mostly prescribed as monotherapy (82%). Adverse reactions noted during this study was minimal (12%).Conclusion: Sodium valproate, a conventional AED still remains the commonly prescribed AED for all types of seizures in children aged 2 to 16 y and also was found to be effective and safe.

Introduction Halitosis means bad or unpleasant odour from oral cavity. It causes embarrassment to the patients and affects their social life and communication. This study aims to find the causes of halitosis and to assess its psychosocial impact. Materials and Methods A prospective study was conducted in the department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head Neck Surgery in a tertiary care hospital. It included 165 patients, presenting to the ENT OPD with chief complains of oral malodour for at least 3 months. The patients in the age above 15 years and below 75 years, irrespective of gender, were included in the study. Results The age of the patients ranged from 15 to 75 years with a mean age of 52.24 ± 15.67 with male: female ratio of 7:10. The most common cause of halitosis in the present study included chronic rhinosinusitis (38.7%), gingivitis/periodontitis (19.39%), tonsillitis (4.84%), laryngopharyngeal reflux (2%), deep neck space infections (1.2%). In 23.56%, the halitosis was a symptom of an underlying malignancy. Conclusion Halitosis from an extra oral origin can be the sign of an underlying systemic disease or malignancy. The consultation should be done with the periodontist, ENT specialist and a physician.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> To study the varied clinical presentations, the predominant etiological agent and incidence of tinea pedis in relation to sex, age group, occupation and aggravating factors among the patients. Also an attempt was made to know if any significant association is there with blood group and the occurrence of tinea pedis.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> A study was conducted among 75 patients who attended Mycology clinic in tertiary care hospital. Detailed history was taken along with complete physical examination and local examination. All cases of tinea pedis were first confirmed by KOH examination. Isolation of the agent was done in Modified SDA medium with cycloheximide. Differentiation of the species was done by culturing on corn meal agar.<strong></strong></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Prevalence of tinea pedis infection was more common among males with male: female ratio of 2.26:1. The 21- 30 years age group was commonly affected by tinea pedis. The distribution of blood groups reflected the general distribution pattern of the population. Culture positivity was recorded in 81.3%.</p><p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> More incidences of bilateral involvement and recurrent episodes were noted among the shoe wearing population than in the non-shoe wearing population. Any patients diagnosed with tinea pedis should be screened for diabetes as implied by the outcome of the study. Infected toe nails may be the site of primary infection and fungal disease can spread to other body areas from these primary sites. <em>Trichophyton rubrum</em> happened to be the chief isolate. <br /><br /></p>

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Fat graft myringoplasty (FGM) is a procedure with a short learning curve, cost effective, with minimal morbidity in properly selected patients. It is useful to relieve the patient of annoyance caused by a small perforation in terms of ear discharge and hearing loss. The aim was to assess postoperative hearing improvement and investigate influence of factors like age, gender and location of perforation on audiological outcomes.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> This study was a prospective study done on 25 patients at a tertiary care hospital who underwent FGM. All patients had small dry central perforation. Air and Bone conduction (AC/BC) thresholds and air-bone gap (ABG) were evaluated both preoperatively and postoperatively.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Mean hearing improvement was 14.4762 dB in &lt;40 yrs age group whereas it was 11.2500 dB in &gt;40 yrs age group. Mean hearing improvement in females was 13.75 dB whereas it was 14.154 dB in males. Mean hearing improvement was 15 dB in posterior, 14.7 dB in inferior and 14.46 dB in anteriorly located perforation.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> FGM is effective in improving postoperative hearing thresholds hence it can be used in small dry central perforations of tympanic membrane in patients irrespective of patient variables such as age, gender, and location of perforation. As no significant statistical difference was observed in terms of gender, location or aetiology of perforation, we consider it a procedure to be recommended across all spectrums of patients.</p>

Background: To study clinical profile of snake bite patients in tertiary care hospital in Indra Gandhi Medical College at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh of North India.Methods: Hospital based prospective observational study was conducted in the Department of Medicine, for the duration of one year from 1st June2013 to 31st May 2014.Results: A total of 78 patients were admitted with mean age of 38.46 years with male to female ratio of 1:1.6. Seasonal variation with peak incidence during rainy season was seen. Most common snake identified was green coloured and peak timing of snake bite was between 07:00am-04:00pm. There was delay in admission of more than 6 hours in 66.67% of cases. Hemotoxicity was predominant manifestation seen in 62.82% of cases and persistence of coagulopathy was most common complication (51.02%) despite giving optimal ASV. There was paucity in ASV administration seen in only 59.46% of referred patients. Mean ASV vials used were 23.41 vials ±8.72 vials.Conclusions: Mass education is required at both general population and health professional levels to improve snake bite management and monovalent ASV against Green pit viper is more practical option to manage cases in this region.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Skin diseases among the pediatric age group people are more common and it contributes to significant burden to health sectors. Also, the pattern of skin diseases changes consistently with reference to place and time. Hence the present study was conducted to assess the pattern of skin diseases in pediatric age group patients attending a tertiary care hospital.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> The cross-sectional study was conducted by the department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy at Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, among the pediatric age group patients attending the outpatient department, during the month of October to December 2019. A total of 412 pediatric age group patients with skin disorder were included in the study. The study was conducted using a proforma with the clinical history and diagnosis of the participants. Data was entered in Microsoft excel and data analysis was done using SPSS version 17.<strong></strong></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> The common skin disorders reported in this study includes infections (34.7%) followed by dermatitis (32.3%), infestations (11.4%), miliaria (8.3%), popular urticaria (7.5%) and urticaria (6.1%). Among the infections fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens contributes to 16.3%, 10.9% and 7.5% of cases, respectively. Also 11.2% of cases were found to be infested with scabies (9.2%) and pediculosis (2.2%).</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Skin disorders in the pediatric age group are common and showing increasing trend. Hence health education of the parents and the school children about good nutrition, hygiene practices, and proper hydration of skin can be promoting in order to reduce the burden of skin disorders.</p>

Background: Following the invention of monaural stethoscope by Laennec and X ray by Roentgen in 18th century there was spectacular advancements in cardiology. The myocardium can be affected by various disease process unrelated to abnormal pressure or volume loads. These processes may be inflammatory, metabolic, infiltrative, ischemic or primary with significant overlap. These diseases usually present as cardiomegaly. In pediatric age group cardiac diseases will present early, sometimes without any signs and symptoms like sudden death due to less cardiac reserve. Few cases of sudden death also showed huge cardiomegaly in postmortem X rays. authors want to carry out this study to find out most common cause of cardiomegaly with silent chest as authors usually miss the diagnosis and these cases may present as sudden death without giving much time to intervene. The aim of the study is to know the most common cause of cardiomegaly without significant murmur in pediatric age group above one year.Methods: Prospective observational study done at a tertiary care hospital Hyderabad over a period of one year from January 2018 to January2019.Results: Most common cause of cardiomegaly without significant murmur was cardiac beriberi. It is mostly prevalent in rural areas of Telangana, mostly occurring in breastfed babies and below six years. All cases were recovered after proper treatment. Fortunately, it is associated with nil mortality, if timely treatment was initiated.Conclusions: Cardiac beriberi which is easily preventable and if treated in proper time it will associated with nil mortality. As it was occurring commonly breastfed babies supplementation of Thiamine to mothers was very useful as a preventive strategy.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Skin diseases are a serious health concern for children of all ages, and they are linked to a high rate of morbidity. In comparison to adults, children's dermatological problems are more impacted by socioeconomic position, dietary habits, climatic exposure, and the external environment. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of infestations among pediatric patients who visited the dermatology outpatient department in a tertiary care hospital.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> From December 2019 to September 2020, all newly diagnosed, untreated male and female pediatric patients (from neonates to adolescents of 14 years of age) attending dermatology outpatient department (OPD) were assessed to determine the prevalence of Infestations within the pediatric population. A thorough history was gathered, followed by a meticulous dermatological examination and if indicated, regular investigations were done and were recorded in predesigned performa.<strong></strong></p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> The analysis included 50 patients who had been infested. There were 43 cases (86%) of scabies and 7 cases (14%) of pediculosis capitis.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> The infestations in the pediatric age group are associated with a high communicable rate so it’s important to diagnose these conditions early to contain the spread and limit the morbidity.</p>
