With the inevitable dominance of video traffic on the Internet, providing perceptually good video quality is becoming a challenging task. This is partly due to the bursty nature of video traffic, changing network conditions and limitations of network transport protocols. This growth of video traffic has made Quality of Experience (QoE) of the end user the focus of the research community. In contrast, Internet service providers are concerned about maximizing revenue by accepting as many sessions as possible, as long as customers remain satisfied. However, there is still no entirely satisfactory admission algorithm for flows with variable rate. The trade-off between the number of sessions and perceived QoE can be optimized by exploiting the bursty nature of video traffic. This paper proposes a novel algorithm to determine the upper limit of the aggregate video rate that can exceed the available bandwidth without degrading the QoE of accepted video sessions. A parameter $\beta$ that defines the exceedable limit is defined. The proposed algorithm results in accepting more sessions without compromising the QoE of on-going video sessions. Thus it contributes to the optimization of the QoE-Session trade-off in support of the expected growth of video traffic on the Internet.

As a basic standard of life, internet connects millions of computers in a global network. People use, participate, or access the internet with the help of internet service providers (ISPs). To have better quality of connection, customers are prone to change their ISPs. In the competitive environment, ISPs endeavor to prevent losing their customers which are referred as churn. Thus, churn management takes an important place for ISPs. To investigate customer loyalty status, behavior, and information of the churn possibility in Turkey, a questionnaire is implemented. By using a real data obtained from a survey, promising and applicable results are obtained to predict the churn behavior of ISP customers in Turkey. As an extension of the study, the questionnaire will be applied for a larger population to find accurate results about churn situations. This study will help ISP companies to determine the required advertising campaigns for the customers.

In this article, Quality of Experience (QoE) is discussed as experienced by Tanzanian internet users for the second biannual of 2016. It presents findings of the research that aimed at among other things, finding out the QoE in internet services offered by telecommunication companies and other internet service providers in the country. A qualitative approach was used to establish practical quality of experience issues considered important by Tanzanians. Online questionnaires distributed over social media mainly WhatsApp and Facebook were used to ask users about their experiences of the services they had been receiving, in which over 2000 responses were collected from all districts of Tanzania. It was established that usability, quality of service, price and after sale support were the main issues found to influence quality of experience for many. The findings in this article are useful for academicians, QoS and QoE researchers, policy makers and ICT professionals.

Video service has become a killer application for mobile terminals. For providing such services, most of the traffic is carried by the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) technique. The key to improve video quality perceived by users, i.e., Quality of Experience (QoE), is to effectively characterize it by using measured data. There have been many literatures that studied this issue. Some existing solutions use probe mechanism at client/server, which, however, are not applicable to network operator. Some other solutions, which aimed to predict QoE by deep packet parsing, cannot work properly as more and more video traffic is encrypted. In this paper, we propose a fog-assisted real-time QoE prediction scheme, which can predict the QoE of DASH-supported video streaming using fog nodes. Neither client/server participations nor deep packet parsing at network equipment is needed, which makes this scheme easy to deploy. Experimental results show that this scheme can accurately detect QoE with high accuracy even when the video traffic is encrypted.

Revenue sharing contracts between Content Providers (CPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can act as leverage for enhancing the infrastructure of the Internet. ISPs can be incentivised to make investments in network infrastructure that improve Quality of Service (QoS) for users if attractive contracts are negotiated between them and CPs. The idea here is that part of the revenue of CPs is shared with ISPs to invest in infrastructure improvement. We propose a model in which CPs (leaders) determine contracts, and an ISP (follower) reacts by strategically determining the infrastructure enhancement (effort) for each CP. Two cases are studied: (i) the ISP differentiates between the CPs and puts (potentially) a different level of efforts to improve the QoS of each CP, and (ii) the ISP does not differentiate between CPs and makes equal amount of effort for all the CPs. The last scenario can be viewed as neutral behavior by the ISP. Our analysis of optimal contracts shows that preference of CPs for the neutral and non-neutral regime depends on their monetizing power - CPs which can better monetize their demand tend to prefer non-neutral regime whereas the weaker CPs tend to prefer the neutral regime. Interestingly, ISP revenue, as well as social utility, are also found to be higher under the non-neutral regime. We then propose an intermediate regulatory regime that we call "soft-neutral", where efforts put by the ISP for all the CPs need not be equal same but the disparity is not wide. We show that the soft-neutral regime alleviates the loss in social utility in the neutral regime and the outcome further improves when CPs determine their contracts through bargaining.
