Churn Prediction in Internet Service Provider Companies

As a basic standard of life, internet connects millions of computers in a global network. People use, participate, or access the internet with the help of internet service providers (ISPs). To have better quality of connection, customers are prone to change their ISPs. In the competitive environment, ISPs endeavor to prevent losing their customers which are referred as churn. Thus, churn management takes an important place for ISPs. To investigate customer loyalty status, behavior, and information of the churn possibility in Turkey, a questionnaire is implemented. By using a real data obtained from a survey, promising and applicable results are obtained to predict the churn behavior of ISP customers in Turkey. As an extension of the study, the questionnaire will be applied for a larger population to find accurate results about churn situations. This study will help ISP companies to determine the required advertising campaigns for the customers.

As computing and Internet connections become general-purpose technologies and services aimed at broad global markets, questions arise about the effectiveness of such markets in terms of public welfare, the participation of differentiated service providers and end-users. Motorola’s Iridium Global Communications project was completed in the 1990s due to similar issues, reaching the goal of technological connectivity for the first time. As Internet services are characterized by high innovation, differentiation and dynamism, they can use well-known models of differentiated products. However, the demand functions in such models are hyperbolic rather than linear. In addition, such models are stochastic and include providers with different ways of competing. In the Internet ecosystem, the links between Internet service providers (ISPs) as telecommunications operators and content service providers are important, especially high-bandwidth video content providers. As increasing bandwidth requires new investments in network capacity, both video content providers and ISPs need to be motivated to do so. In order to analyze the relationships between Internet service providers and content providers in the Internet ecosystem, computable models, based on the construction of payoff functions for all the participants in the ecosystem, are suggested. The introduction of paid content browsing will motivate Internet service providers to invest in increasing the capacity of the global network, which has a trend of exponential growth. At the same time, such a browsing will violate the principles of net neutrality, which provides grounds for the development of new tasks to minimize the violations of net neutrality and maximize the social welfare of the Internet ecosystem. The models point to the importance of the efficiency of Internet service providers, the predictability of demand and the high price elasticity of innovative services.

With the inevitable dominance of video traffic on the Internet, providing perceptually good video quality is becoming a challenging task. This is partly due to the bursty nature of video traffic, changing network conditions and limitations of network transport protocols. This growth of video traffic has made Quality of Experience (QoE) of the end user the focus of the research community. In contrast, Internet service providers are concerned about maximizing revenue by accepting as many sessions as possible, as long as customers remain satisfied. However, there is still no entirely satisfactory admission algorithm for flows with variable rate. The trade-off between the number of sessions and perceived QoE can be optimized by exploiting the bursty nature of video traffic. This paper proposes a novel algorithm to determine the upper limit of the aggregate video rate that can exceed the available bandwidth without degrading the QoE of accepted video sessions. A parameter $\beta$ that defines the exceedable limit is defined. The proposed algorithm results in accepting more sessions without compromising the QoE of on-going video sessions. Thus it contributes to the optimization of the QoE-Session trade-off in support of the expected growth of video traffic on the Internet.

Revenue sharing contracts between Content Providers (CPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can act as leverage for enhancing the infrastructure of the Internet. ISPs can be incentivised to make investments in network infrastructure that improve Quality of Service (QoS) for users if attractive contracts are negotiated between them and CPs. The idea here is that part of the revenue of CPs is shared with ISPs to invest in infrastructure improvement. We propose a model in which CPs (leaders) determine contracts, and an ISP (follower) reacts by strategically determining the infrastructure enhancement (effort) for each CP. Two cases are studied: (i) the ISP differentiates between the CPs and puts (potentially) a different level of efforts to improve the QoS of each CP, and (ii) the ISP does not differentiate between CPs and makes equal amount of effort for all the CPs. The last scenario can be viewed as neutral behavior by the ISP. Our analysis of optimal contracts shows that preference of CPs for the neutral and non-neutral regime depends on their monetizing power - CPs which can better monetize their demand tend to prefer non-neutral regime whereas the weaker CPs tend to prefer the neutral regime. Interestingly, ISP revenue, as well as social utility, are also found to be higher under the non-neutral regime. We then propose an intermediate regulatory regime that we call "soft-neutral", where efforts put by the ISP for all the CPs need not be equal same but the disparity is not wide. We show that the soft-neutral regime alleviates the loss in social utility in the neutral regime and the outcome further improves when CPs determine their contracts through bargaining.

The Internet represents a transformative force of paradigms, making everyday situations such as how to watch movies and interact with society have a rapid transformation in recent years, driven by the distribution platforms of online video over the Internet, which consist of cross-platform distributed systems forming the so-called over the top – OTT. Sending video content on the Internet requires a variety of infrastructure devices associated with the Internet Service Provider – ISP, which must provide sufficient bandwidth Internet access to ensure quality of service. The growth in broadband Internet use raises concerns for ISPs due to the high bandwidth demands generated by OTT applications. The characterization of users’ behavior for OTT services can contribute to a better understanding of the interaction of users of these services with ISP, which will help small ISPs manage the capacity of their resources by providing a better quality of the service provided and possibilities for offering new services. This work aims to evaluate, using a case study, the impacts of OTT services, specifically Netflix, Facebook and Google, on a small broadband Internet access provider. In the research, real data were monitored and collected from all clients of an ISP using the PRTG, Winbox, Wireshark, and legacy applications tools on edge routers. With the result of the case study one can have a reference for the dimensioning of internet backbone access links with the use of CDN in the ISP environment, because users’ traffic in access to OTT services in small ISP affects on average 52% of the tráfeg the total ISP. This study investigated the pattern of news consumption on the internet and the influence of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating condition on use among undergraduate students in public universities in Nigeria. Both quantitative and qualitative research approaches were used. Respondents were selected from four faculties in two public universities in Lagos State, Nigeria. Findings revealed that mobile phone was the most popular device used, entertainment news was the most popular type of news consumed, while Facebook was the most popular platform used for news consumption. Poor quality of internet connection and high data cost were challenges to news consumption. Generally, all the four UTAUT constructs were found to positively influence the student’s intention and actual use of the internet for news consumption. Government and internet service providers should work together to improve the coverage and quality of internet connection, providing more affordable internet subscription rates for users.

Abstract:The internet developed for the first time in Indonesia in the early 1990s. Starting from the pagayuban network, it is now expanding without boundaries anywhere. A survey conducted by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) said that the number of internet users in Indonesia in 2012 reached 63 million people or 24.23 percent of the country's total population. Next year, that figure is predicted to increase by close to 30 percent to 82 million users and continue to grow to 107 million in 2014 and 139 million or 50 percent of the total population in 2015. million people. This matter also results in political communication with the internet media, or is often said to be cyber politics. Cyber politics in Indonesia has faced growth in recent years. There are many facilities that support the growth of cyber politics, such as Facebook, Twitter, mailing list, YouTube, and others.Keywords: Cyberpolitik, Internet  Abstrak:Internet berkembang pertama kali di Indonesia pada awal tahun 1990-an. Video on demand (VoD) services such as YouTube have generated considerable volumes of Internet traffic in homes and buildings in recent years. While Internet service providers deploy fiber and recent wireless technologies such as 802.11ax to support high bandwidth requirement, the best-effort nature of 802.11 networks and variable wireless medium conditions hinder users from experiencing maximum quality during video streaming. Hence, Internet service providers (ISPs) have an interest in monitoring the perceived quality of service (PQoS) in customer premises in order to avoid customer dissatisfaction and churn. Since existing approaches for estimating PQoS or quality of experience (QoE) requires external measurement of generic network performance parameters, this paper presents a novel approach to estimate the PQoS of video streaming using only 802.11 specific network performance parameters collected from wireless access points. This study produced datasets comprising 802.11n/ac/ax specific network performance parameters labelled with PQoS in the form of mean opinion scores (MOS) to train machine learning algorithms. As a result, we achieved as many as 93–99% classification accuracy in estimating PQoS by monitoring only 802.11 parameters on off-the-shelf Wi-Fi access points. Furthermore, the 802.11 parameters used in the machine learning model were analyzed to identify the cause of quality degradation detected on the Wi-Fi networks. Finally, ISPs can utilize the results of this study to provide predictable and measurable wireless quality by implementing non-intrusive monitoring of customers’ perceived quality. In addition, this approach reduces customers’ privacy concerns while reducing the operational cost of analytics for ISPs.

The net neutrality principle states that users should have equal access to all Internet content and that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should not practice differentiated treatment on any of the Internet traffic. While net neutrality aims to restrain any kind of discrimination, it also grants exemption to a certain category of traffic known as specialized services (SS), by allowing the ISP to dedicate part of the resources for the latter. In this work, we consider a heterogeneous LTE/WiFi wireless network and we investigate revenue-maximizing Radio Access Technology (RAT) selection strategies that are net neutrality-compliant, with exemption granted to SS traffic. Our objective is to find out how the bandwidth reservation for SS traffic would be made in a way that allows maximizing the revenue while being in compliance with net neutrality and how the choice of the ratio of reserved bandwidth would affect the revenue. The results show that reserving bandwidth for SS traffic in one RAT (LTE) can achieve higher revenue. On the other hand, when the capacity is reserved across both LTE and WiFi, higher social benefit in terms of number of admitted users can be realized, as well as lower blocking probability for the Internet access traffic.

This article describes how a rapid increase in usage of internet has emerged from last few years. This high usage of internet has occurred due to increase in popularity of multimedia applications. However, there is no guarantee of Quality of Service to the users. To fulfill the desired requirements, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) establish a service level agreement (SLA) with clients including specific parameters like bandwidth, reliability, cost, power consumption, etc. ISPs make maximum SLAs and decrease energy consumption to raise their profit. As a result, users do not get the desired services for which they pay. Virtual Software Defined Networks are flexible and manageable networks which can be used to achieve these goals. This article presents shortest path algorithm which improves the matrices like energy consumption, bandwidth usage, successful allocation of nodes in the network using VSDN approach. The results show a 40% increase in the performance of proposed algorithms with a respect to existing algorithms.
