The 2016 US Presidential Elections brought about one of the fiercest election campaigns so far, ending in a tight victory of Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, over Hillary Clinton, the candidate of the Democrats. The public appearances Trump made at rallies were one of the main tools he used in profiling himself as the new leader of America. In the light of the unstable situation in the world and the frequent terrorist attacks on Western states, Trump’s rhetoric regarding the issue of “Radical Islamic terrorism” was the key factor that propelled him towards victory (Azarian 2016). When he tackled the problem of terrorism, one of the discourse mechanisms that he used in abundance was a set of conceptual metaphors drawn from different spheres of human experience. The aim of this research will be to contribute to the role metaphor plays in discourse by highlighting some of the most salient and frequent metaphors in Trump’s terrorism rhetoric, including the conceptualizations involved and their conceptual implications in discourse.

Subject Outlook for US policy towards South-east Asia under the Trump administration. Significance Donald Trump becomes US president on January 20. South-east Asian governments are assessing the outlook for relations with Washington during his administration. Their region drew scant attention during the US election campaign, and regional leaders have little reason to think South-east Asia will be an early Trump administration priority. However, they fear the effects of possible early frictions between Washington and Beijing, and increased regional rivalries if Washington and Moscow strengthen relations to China’s detriment. Impacts Thai-US relations are likely to warm under Trump. Myanmar’s leaders will look to the US Senate to protect the gains in Myanmar-US ties under Obama. Trump-owned or branded businesses in South-east Asia could face protests or terrorist attacks.

Significance President Donald Trump is a keen advocate of executive orders, as were former Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama. However, executive orders can be legally dubious. Impacts There will be uncertainty over whether Trump’s executive orders to tackle COVID-19 can survive legal challenge. Biden would use executive orders to unpick Trump’s legacy on environmental regulation. There will be further executive orders on immigration reform and border security, and these will be legally challenged.

This section comprises international, Arab, Israeli, and U.S. documents and source materials, as well as an annotated list of recommended reports. Significant developments this quarter: In the international diplomatic arena, the UN Security Council approved Resolution 2334, reaffirming the illegality of Israeli settlements and calling for a return to peace negotiations. Additionally, former U.S. secretary of state John Kerry delivered a final address on the Israel-Palestine conflict, outlining a groundwork for negotiations. Two weeks later, international diplomats met in Paris to establish incentives for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas to return to the negotiating table. Despite international discussions of peace talks and the impediment settlements pose to a two-state solution, the Israeli Knesset passed the controversial Regulation Law, enabling the government to retroactively legalize settlements and confiscate Palestinian land throughout the West Bank. Meanwhile, U.S. president Donald Trump took office on 20 January 2017, and he wasted no time before inviting Netanyahu to the White House for their first meeting, in February.
