In the classroom, students need to have good reading comprehension. Without that, they will not have critical skills for studying academic material. However, many students in Indonesia still have difficulty understanding the text. Using an appropriate strategy can help them understand the text. Story maps can be used can be used for students to help them in understanding the text. This research aims to know students’ perceptions on the use of story maps in reading comprehension, the advantages and the difficulties of using story maps for students’ reading comprehension in class. This research was conducted to the students of tenth grade at one senior high school in Lamongan. The instruments in this study were a questionnaire and interview. The research design of this study used a qualitative research design. The technique to analyze the data were data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that story maps can help the students in understanding the text. Most students felt that they have an improvement in reading comprehension because they felt easy and fast to understand the text. Story maps also help the students understand the structure of the text and it was also an interesting activity. Besides that, the students also faced difficulties when using story maps such as difficult making the story maps, still don’t understand the concept of story maps and difficult to understand the content of the text so they also have difficulty in making story maps.

This study was aimed at describing how the teachers taught listening comprehension of descriptive text based on 2013 Curriculum and describing the reasons of why the teachers did the ways. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The data sources of the research were the English teachers of SMA Immanuel Medan. The data were the processes of teaching listening comprehension of descriptive text and the reasons of why the teachers did the ways of teaching. The techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. The data were analyzed by using interactive model which were data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the teachers used scientific approach steps in learning activities based on 2013 Curriculum in the teaching listening comprehension of descriptive text and the underlying reasons of the teachers‟ ways in teaching listening comrehension were the teachers believed that the students the students could comprehend and understandthe text by comparing the kind of texts, knowing the definition and text strucutre of texts, translating the difficult words and repeating the the recording of material. The knowledge of mastery the concept of teaching listening comprehension and skill of realization of the concept into real teaching behaviors will help the students‟ skill of listening comprehension be better.

This study aims at describing how the teachers teach reading comprehension of narrative text to the tenth grade students in Sibolangit and revealing the underlying reasons of why do they do that way. This study was conducted by using qualitative research design. The subject of this study were two english teachers who taught at tenth grade students of two SMA in Sibolangit they are : SMA Negeri  1 Sibolangit  and SMA RK Deli Murni Bandar Baru in academic year 2016/ 2017. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman data analysis technique. The  technique of collecting the data was recorded from the classroom process in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text. The findings of the study show that most of teachers’ ways are not yet focusing on teaching reading comprehension but rather focusing teaching the knowledge of genre. The underlying reason of the teachers’ ways in teaching reading comprehension did not facilitate reading comprehension. It was due to the misperception of the concept of teaching reading comprehension.  Keywords : Teaching,Reading Comprehension,Narrative Text.

The objective of this study is to explain the reason of utilizing subtitling strategies in The Meg movie texts. The research methodology used in the research is qualitative research design. The data were analyzed by using interactive model of qualitative data management and analysis namely data collection, data condensation, data display and verification and conclusion. The findings of this study revealed that the reasons of translator used subtitling strategies in The Meg Movie Texts consisted of historical circumstances, traditions and the strategy to which is accustomed for both the source and the target viewer. The conclusion that the strategy to which is accustomed for both the source and the target viewer as the focused on translator reason used subtitling strategies in The Meg movie texts.Keywords: Movie, Subtitles, Subtitling Strategies, Translation, Texts

This study aims at investigating the benefits and challenges encountered by the teacher and the students in implementing task-based instruction. This study mainly utilizes a qualitative research design covering the trait of a case study. This study was carried out in one vocational high school in Bandung involving one class from the eleventh grade students. The data were collected through interview and questionnaires. The data from classroom interview and questionnaires were analyzed qualitatively. The result of interview and questionnaires revealed that task-based instruction resulted in some benefits and challenges. It was revealed that task-based instruction contributes to students� speaking skill and enhances students� participation. Apart from those benefits, some challenges were also found in terms of teacher�s competence, availability of time, and mixed ability students. Accordingly, it is recommended that this method is implemented in a long period of time.Keywords: task-based instruction, teaching speaking, benefits of task-based instruction, challenges of task-based instruction

The researcher aimed to conduct this research due particular in students reading comprehension at Mts N Ganting Padang Panjang. The researcher found the problems that first, students interest in reading a text was still lacking. Second, students still have difficulty in reading comprehension. Third, students had a lack of vocabularies in translating the meaning of the word. Therefore, this research is to know how the teacher applies the ESA technique on reading comprehension. The research aimed to analyze teacher apply ESA technique on reading comprehension. This research used a descriptive qualitative research design. The object of this research were two English teachers in Mts N Ganting Padang Panjang. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and interview. The result of the research showed that ESA technique is suitable and effective for reading comprehension that can be seen from teacher apply ESA technique on reading comprehension. Engage, in this elements the teacher motivate students and active their background knowledge. The study, in this elements teacher, focus on the topic in the text and guide students in understanding the content of the text. Activate, in this elements teacher gives exercises and assignment to students, then concludes the contents of the text that has been learned.

This research dealt with conversational style of male and female teachers in senior high school. The objectives of this study were: to investigate features of conversational style used by male and female teachers in senior high school; and to elaborate the conversational style. It was conducted using qualitative research design. The data were obtained from 4 male and 4 female teachers. 20 conversations were recorded. The instruments of collecting data were observation, recording, and interviewing adopted by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The data were classified to the criteria of conversational style determined by Swann (2000).The findings showed there were five features of conversational style used by male and female teachers. All features of conversational style were found in realization of male and female teachers.Keywords: Conversational style, Gender and Language, Teachers‟ language.

This study investigates students’ causes of students’ difficulties, kinds of students’ difficulties, and the most dominant problem in writing recount text written by ten students at a Senior High School in Indramayu, West Java. This study employed a qualitative research design, embracing characteristics of a case study. The data were obtained from collection of samples of students’ recount texts. The findings revealed that most students have been able to implement the schematic structures and linguistic features of argumen texts, which indicates the ability of students to write the texts and to achieve its purpose. However, some students found difficulties in terms of the use of tenses, the use of vocabulary, and the use of specific participants. Based on the analysis of students’ writing, it was found some causes that made students did some mistakes in writing recount texts. Based on these findings, it is recommended that explicit teaching be needed to develop students’ writing skills.

English is a subject in Indonesian school that learned from junior high school until the universities. Therefore one of importance basic aspects and skills in learning English for students is to understand avariety of English vocabulary. In learning English, vocabulary plays an important role, it means vocabulary is the basic one to mastering all English Skill. This research intended to students at seventh grade of Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) in Cimahi. And this study aims to determine the benefits of Color Coding technique in improving the ability of English vocabulary. Color Coding is a method that can be used in teaching vocabulary, one of the use of color is to identifying something, it can make the student easy in their learning vocabulary process. The design of this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The researcher employed qualitative research design and pre experimental pretest-posttest. Thedata were collected from the result of pretest and posttets. The result of the data showed: Mean of pretest was 63.00, mean of posttest was 82.00, The result also show the score of t-observed was higher than ttable (2.08 > 1.72). It means color coding is effective to improve students’ vocabulary ability.Keywords: Vocabulary, Color Coding Technique, CAR

Este artículo pretende exponer resultados parciales de la investigación Niveles de comprensión lectora de los estudiantes que ingresan a primer semestre durante el 2012 en la Corporación Universitaria Rafael Núñez, dicha medición se hizo a partir de un diseño de investigación cualitativo, del tipo acción-educativa; cuyos datos se recolectaron a partir de un test de comprensión lectora basado en la metodología ICFES. Cabe anotar que los resultados fueron analizados de manera cuantitativa, pero con intenciones interpretativas. Los principales resultados que se obtuvieron están relacionados con el porcentaje de estudiantes que se ubican en cada nivel y el porcentaje que de muestra dominio en las competencias cognitivas, en su orden, se halló que la mayoría ingresa en un nivel bajo y que el domino de las competencias es inferior al 60%. Lo que permitió como conclusiones preliminares la necesidad de hacer un seguimiento a los estudiantes, implementar acciones para la adquisición y el desarrollo de habilidades en la lectura y en la escritura y diseñar estrategias de lectura encaminadas a fortalecer las competencias interpretativa, argumentativa y propositiva.ABSTRACT:This article aims to present partial results of research reading comprehension levels of students entering first semester in 2012 at the University Corporation Rafael Nunez, this measurement was made from a qualitative research design, the type-educational action; whose data were collected from a reading comprehension test based on the methodology ICFES. It should be noted that the results were analyzed quantitatively, but interpretative intentions. The main results obtained are related to the percentage of students who are placed in each level and the percentage that demonstrates mastery on cognitive skills, in order, it was found that most enter at a low level and that the domain of the competence is below 60%. What allowed as preliminary findings need to track students, implement actions for the acquisition and development of skills in reading and writing and reading strategies designed to strengthen the skills of interpretation, argumentative and purposeful.

This study aims to explore the use of politeness strategies which occur in EFL classroom interactions in a senior high school. This study applied a descriptive qualitative research design to explore the politeness strategies used by the teacher and the students in their interactions. The participants in this study were an English teacher and 30 students. The data in this study were in the form of utterances which contain politeness strategies. The data were taken from a 90-minutes English lesson which was video-recorded. The findings showed there were a total of 13 excerpts containing three politeness strategies: positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and bald-on-record strategy. The interactions were dominated by the teacher. Moreover, the politeness strategies which occurred in the classroom interactions were influenced by some factors such as age difference, institutional position, power, and social distance.
