Schizophrenia (SZ) is associated with an increased risk of life-long cognitive impairments, age-related chronic disease, and premature mortality. We investigated evidence for advanced brain ageing in adult SZ patients, and whether this was associated with clinical characteristics in a prospective meta-analytic study conducted by the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group. The study included data from 26 cohorts worldwide, with a total of 2803 SZ patients (mean age 34.2 years; range 18-72 years; 67% male) and 2598 healthy controls (mean age 33.8 years, range 18-73 years, 55% male). Brain-predicted age was individually estimated using a model trained on independent data based on 68 measures of cortical thickness and surface area, 7 subcortical volumes, lateral ventricular volumes and total intracranial volume, all derived from T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Deviations from a healthy brain ageing trajectory were assessed by the difference between brain-predicted age and chronological age (brain-predicted age difference [brain-PAD]). On average, SZ patients showed a higher brain-PAD of +3.64 years (95% CI: 3.01, 4.26; I2 = 55.28%) compared to controls, after adjusting for age and sex (Cohen's d = 0.50). Among SZ patients, brain-PAD was not associated with specific clinical characteristics (age of onset, duration of illness, symptom severity, or antipsychotic use and dose). This large-scale collaborative study suggests advanced structural brain ageing in SZ. Longitudinal studies of SZ and a range of mental and somatic health outcomes will help to further evaluate the clinical implications of increased brain-PAD and its ability to be influenced by interventions.

Background and Objectives: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious and widespread problem worldwide. IPV can seriously influence the physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health of women as well as the welfare of their children. In the Middle East, IPV is pervasive and widely acceptable. The present study was done to determine the prevalence and correlates of IPV among women attending different primary health centers in the Aljouf region, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 403 Saudi women attending different primary health centers in the Aljouf region, Saudi Arabia. A structured anonymous questionnaire was distributed to the targeted population during a face-to-face interview. Data analysis was done using the SPSS program, version 24. Results: The present study showed that 30.3% of the participants had been exposed to IPV over the last year. Concerning the types of violence, the present study revealed that emotional violence is the highest followed by physical and then sexual violence representing 92.6%, 67.2%, and 44.3%, respectively. The significant predictors of IPV were women with one to three children (OR = 7.322, p-value = 0.006), women with four children or more (OR = 13.463, p-value = 0.006), and women married to husbands with aggressive behavior (OR = 98.703, p-value < 0.001). Not taking the approval on marriage was significantly associated with more exposure to violence (OR = 3.190, p-value = 0.042). In addition, husband smoking status was a significant predictor for IPV (OR = 2.774, p-value = 0.012). However, women married to alcoholic drinkers had a significantly lower risk for exposure to IPV (OR = 0.108, p-value = 0.040). On the other hand, women’s age, marital status, women’s educational level, monthly income in RS, perception of income sufficiency, marriage duration, the age difference between women and their husband, and drug abuse status of the husband were not significant predictors of IPV (p-value ≥ 0.05). Sociocultural effects were the most frequent reason for IPV as reported by the participants (57.4%). The most common consequences of IPV were psychological problems (75.4%) and injuries (42.6%). Women’s reactions to IPV were leaving home (32.8%) or no reaction (36.8%) to retain their marriage. Conclusions: IPV remains an important public health problem among married women in this study area. Urgent interventions including educational and screening programs for Saudi women are required to mitigate the problem.

Abstract Studying the molecular mechanisms of ovarian aging is crucial for understanding the age-related fertility issues in females. Recently, a single-cell transcriptomic roadmap of ovarian aging based on non-human primates revealed the molecular signatures of the oocytes at different developmental stages. Herein, we present the first epigenetic landscape of human ovarian aging, through an integrated analysis of the single-cell assay for transposase-accessible chromatin using sequencing (scATAC-seq) and single-cell RNA-seq. We depicted the transcriptional profiles and chromatin accessibility of the ovarian tissues isolated from old (n=4) and young (n=2) donors. The unsupervised clustering of data revealed seven distinct cell populations in the ovarian tissues and six subtypes of oocytes, which could be distinguished by age difference. Further analysis of the scATAC-seq data from the young and old oocytes revealed that the interaction between the Notch signaling pathway and AP-1 family transcription factors may crucially determine oocyte aging. Finally, a machine-learning algorithm was applied to calculate the optimal model based on the single-cell dataset for predicting oocyte aging, which exhibited excellent accuracy with a cross-validated area under the receiver operating characteristics score of 0.99. In summary, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of human ovarian aging at both the transcriptomic and epigenetic levels, based on an integrated analysis of large-scale single-cell datasets. We believe our results will shed light on the discovery of potential therapeutic targets or diagnostic markers for age-related ovarian disorders.

Abstract. Recent studies highlight that biomass-burning aerosol over the remote southeast Atlantic is some of the most sunlight-absorbing aerosol on the planet. In-situ measurements of single-scattering albedo at the 530 nm wavelength (SSA530nm) range from 0.83 to 0.89 within six flights (five in September, 2016 and one in late August, 2017) of the ORACLES (ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS) aircraft campaign, increasing with the organic aerosol to black carbon (OA : BC) mass ratio. OA : BC mass ratios of 10 to 14 are lower than some model values and consistent with BC-enriched source emissions, based on indirect inferences of fuel type (savannah grasslands) and dry, flame-efficient combustion conditions. These primarily explain the low single-scattering albedos. We investigate whether continued chemical aging of aerosol plumes of intermediate age (4–7 days after emission, as determined from model tracers) within the free troposphere can further lower the SSA530nm. A mean OA to organic carbon mass ratio of 2.2 indicates highly oxygenated aerosol with the chemical marker f44 indicating the free-tropospheric aerosol continues to oxidize after advecting offshore of continental Africa. Two flights, for which BC to carbon monoxide (CO) ratios remain constant with increasing chemical age, are analyzed further. In both flights, the OA : BC mass ratio decreases over the same time span, indicating continuing net aerosol loss. One flight sampled younger (∼ 4 days) aerosol within the strong zonal outflow of the 4–6 km altitude African Easterly Jet-South. This possessed the highest OA : BC mass ratio of the 2016 campaign and overlaid slightly older aerosol with proportionately less OA, although the age difference of one day is not enough to attribute to a large-scale recirculation and subsidence pattern. The other flight sampled aerosol constrained closer to the coast by a mid-latitude disturbance and found older aerosol aloft overlying younger aerosol. Its vertical increase in OA : BC and nitrate to BC was less pronounced than when younger aerosol overlaid older aerosol, consistent with compensation between a net aerosol loss through aging and a thermodynamical partitioning. Organic nitrate provided 68 % on average of the total nitrate for the 6 flights, in contrast to measurements made at Ascension Island that only found inorganic nitrate. Some evidence for the thermodynamical partitioning to the particle phase at higher altitudes with higher relative humidities for nitrate is still found. The 470–660 nm absorption Angstrom exponent is slightly higher near the African coast than further offshore (approximately 1.2 versus 1.0–1.1), indicating some brown carbon may be present near the coast. The data support the following parameterization: SSA530nm = 0.80+0056*(OA : BC). This indicates a 20 % decrease in SSA can be attributed to chemical aging, or the net 25 % reduction in OA : BC documented for constant BC : CO ratios.

Abstract Background Decellularized pulmonary homografts are being increasingly adopted for right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction in adult patients undergoing the Ross procedure. Few reports presented Matrix PplusN xenograft (Matrix) in a negative light. The objective of this study was to compare our midterm outcomes of Matrix xenograft versus standard cryopreserved pulmonary homograft (CPHG). Methods Eighteen patients received Matrix xenograft between January 2012 and June 2016, whereas 66 patients received CPHG. Using nonparametric statistical tests and survival analysis, we compared midterm echocardiographic and clinical outcomes between the groups. Results Except for significant age difference (the Matrix group was significantly older with 57 ± 8 years than the CPHG group, 48 ± 9 years, p = 0.02), the groups were similar in all other baseline characteristics. There were no significant differences in cardiopulmonary bypass times (208.3 ± 32.1 vs. 202.8 ± 34.8) or in cross-clamp times (174 ± 33.9 vs. 184.4 ± 31.1) for Matrix and CPHG, respectively. The Matrix group had significantly inferior freedom from reintervention than the CPHG group with 77.8 versus 98.5% (p = 0.02). Freedom from pulmonary valve regurgitation ≥ 2 was not significantly different between the groups with 82.4 versus 90.5% for Matrix versus CPHG, respectively. After median follow-up of 4.9 years, Matrix xenograft developed significantly higher peak pressure gradients compared with CPHG (20.4 ± 15.5 vs. 12.2 ± 9.0 mm Hg; p = 0.04). Conclusion After 5 years of clinical and echocardiographic follow-up, the decellularized Matrix xenograft had inferior freedom from reintervention compared with the standard CPHG. Closer follow-up is necessary to avoid progression of valve failure into right ventricular deterioration.

Siblings have been hypothesized to positively impact the motor performance of children by acting as examples and by providing a safe environment, but they may also negatively impact motor performance because they could compete for the parent’s time and care. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between several sibling characteristics and motor performance in 3- to 5-year-old children. The sample consisted of 205 3- to 5-year-old children (mean age 50.9 ± 10.0 months, 52.2% boys). The Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 was used to measure motor performance. The sibling variable was operationalized as the number of siblings present, the age difference between a child and its siblings, and the birth order position of a child. The confounding variables that were taken into account were the age, sex, and behavioral problems of the child and maternal education level. None of the investigated sibling variables were related to the total motor performance of a child after controlling for possible confounding variables. The absence of any associations between the sibling variables and motor performance might be explained by the characteristics of the study sample, the possibility that there is no linear relationship, or the presence of still unknown moderating or mediating factors.

Status incongruence resulting from a supervisor who is younger than their subordinate potentially leads to age stereotyping of employees. This article investigates the relationship between age difference and supervisory ratings of five competence-based measures of subordinate employability (Occupational Expertise, Anticipation/Optimisation, Personal Flexibility, Corporate Sense, and Balance). In addition, we consider the buffering role of a supportive learning context which allows older workers access to learning resources. Learning context is represented by duration of the supervisory relationship, perceived organizational learning climate and participation in, and application of, training and development. Using 295 dyads of employees and their direct supervisors in a Dutch building company, findings show that age dissimilarity reflecting status incongruence was related to lower supervisory ratings of Occupational Expertise (job-related competence) and Corporate Sense (social/organizational competence) regardless of learning context. Longer duration relationships exacerbated, rather than buffered, the age difference effect on some types of supervisory ratings. The implications of these findings for age stereotyping with regard to employability are considered.

This paper proposes a re-reading of the history of divorces from the re-establishment of divorce in France in 1884 until the eve of the First World War, by distinguishing three major territories: the urban population, the rural population and the Department of the Seine. To refine the analysis, we will add data distinguishing Paris from its suburbs, within the Seine Department. The interest of the analysis, beyond measuring the level of divorces in these territories, is to answer the question of the homogenisation of divorce behaviour between 1884 and 1913. The available sources also provide details on divorces, which are generally unavailable outside the national level, such as which spouse obtained the divorce, the reason for the divorce, the length of the marriage, the age and age difference between the two spouses, and the number of children of divorced couples. In addition to measuring the levels of divorces in these territories, the aim will therefore be to find out whether the characteristics of divorces are the same in the urban and rural populations and in the Seine Department and, if not, to try to understand why they diverge.

Study hypothesis  The costs of anti-epileptic medication (AED) and poor care coordination result in increased Emergency Department (ED) visits for seizure events and produce both direct and indirect economic burdens on patients with frequent seizures.    Methods  A retrospective chart review study of ED visits with chief concern of seizure from two hospitals over a two-year period was performed; resulting in 152 visits recorded in this study.  Data collected included demographic information, relevant seizure or past medical history (PMH), diagnostics performed in the ED, and the admission status of the patient along with the total charges per encounter.  Data was analyzed descriptively and with logistic regression analysis.    Results  The results yielded by this study were generally in-line with the results of similar studies, indicating a higher relative rate of ED seizure visits for males, people of Black race, and infant and toddler populations. A high proportion of Medicaid/Medicare coverage and indiscernible employment status for most patients were also noted.  Observed differences in average cost among patients with and without epilepsy and male versus female patients were not shown to be statistically significant.  However, the increased likelihood of admission with increasing age was shown to be significant with an average age difference between admitted and discharged populations of approximately 10 years (p= 0.003).    Conclusions  The data provided here is not sufficient to examine the complex relationship between seizures, epilepsy, and costs among various other patient factors.  Further study is necessary to minimize direct and indirect costs of seizures.    Acknowledgments  This project was funded, in part, with support from the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute funded, in part by UL1TR002529 from the National Institutes of Health. Turner syndrome (TS) affects 1/2,500 live-born female infants. In the present study, we attempted to clarify the relationship between genetic factors (especially the X-chromosome origin), clinical features, body/sexual development, and treatment outcomes. We enrolled 39 female infants aged between 3 and 14 years. General demographic and clinical features were documented, and laboratory analysis of blood samples was performed. Subject karyotype was determined by G-banding of 50 peripheral white blood cells, and the parenteral origin of the retained X-chromosome was determined. Next, growth hormone (GH) treatment was prescribed for 12 months, with follow-ups performed as determined. For patient groups separated according to X-chromosome origin, the basal height, bone age, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) levels were comparable; however, after the 12-month treatment, significant differences in the height increase and IGF-1 levels were observed. If the X-chromosome (or chromosomes) originated from both parents, the increase in height was less substantial, with lower serum IGF-1 levels. The uterine size, prolactin level, increased weight after treatment, and bone age difference after treatment negatively correlated with the mother’s age at the time of birth. The mother’s height at the time of birth demonstrated a negative correlation with the basal bone age difference and a positive correlation with the IGF-1 level. In summary, the retained X-chromosome derived from both parents is associated with poorer response to GH therapy. The mother’s age and height at the time of birth can strongly impact the patient’s body/sexual development and the response to GH treatment. Thus, the mother’s age and height at the time of birth and the parental origin of the X-chromosome should be carefully considered before developing a treatment plan for TS.
