An Analysis of Students' Difficulties in Writing Recount Text (A Case Study at a Senior High School in Indramayu)

This study investigates students’ causes of students’ difficulties, kinds of students’ difficulties, and the most dominant problem in writing recount text written by ten students at a Senior High School in Indramayu, West Java. This study employed a qualitative research design, embracing characteristics of a case study. The data were obtained from collection of samples of students’ recount texts. The findings revealed that most students have been able to implement the schematic structures and linguistic features of argumen texts, which indicates the ability of students to write the texts and to achieve its purpose. However, some students found difficulties in terms of the use of tenses, the use of vocabulary, and the use of specific participants. Based on the analysis of students’ writing, it was found some causes that made students did some mistakes in writing recount texts. Based on these findings, it is recommended that explicit teaching be needed to develop students’ writing skills.

This study aims at investigating the benefits and challenges encountered by the teacher and the students in implementing task-based instruction. This study mainly utilizes a qualitative research design covering the trait of a case study. This study was carried out in one vocational high school in Bandung involving one class from the eleventh grade students. The data were collected through interview and questionnaires. The data from classroom interview and questionnaires were analyzed qualitatively. The result of interview and questionnaires revealed that task-based instruction resulted in some benefits and challenges. It was revealed that task-based instruction contributes to students� speaking skill and enhances students� participation. Apart from those benefits, some challenges were also found in terms of teacher�s competence, availability of time, and mixed ability students. Accordingly, it is recommended that this method is implemented in a long period of time.Keywords: task-based instruction, teaching speaking, benefits of task-based instruction, challenges of task-based instruction

This research dealt with conversational style of male and female teachers in senior high school. The objectives of this study were: to investigate features of conversational style used by male and female teachers in senior high school; and to elaborate the conversational style. It was conducted using qualitative research design. The data were obtained from 4 male and 4 female teachers. 20 conversations were recorded. The instruments of collecting data were observation, recording, and interviewing adopted by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The data were classified to the criteria of conversational style determined by Swann (2000).The findings showed there were five features of conversational style used by male and female teachers. All features of conversational style were found in realization of male and female teachers.Keywords: Conversational style, Gender and Language, Teachers‟ language.

This study aims to explore the use of politeness strategies which occur in EFL classroom interactions in a senior high school. This study applied a descriptive qualitative research design to explore the politeness strategies used by the teacher and the students in their interactions. The participants in this study were an English teacher and 30 students. The data in this study were in the form of utterances which contain politeness strategies. The data were taken from a 90-minutes English lesson which was video-recorded. The findings showed there were a total of 13 excerpts containing three politeness strategies: positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and bald-on-record strategy. The interactions were dominated by the teacher. Moreover, the politeness strategies which occurred in the classroom interactions were influenced by some factors such as age difference, institutional position, power, and social distance.

This research was conducted to describe the entrepreneurial leadership of SMEs Tofu "RDS" and description about the obstacles experienced by SMEs Tofu "RDS". This research uses descriptive qualitative research design that aims to obtain the information available at this time, and then attempt to describe, record and interpret the information. Data collection methods used were interviews, observation and documentation. This type of qualitative research is case study. The result of the research is the condition of entrepreneurial leadership from the leadership of SMEs Tofu "RDS" is generally good because he is able to motivate employees well, have a picture of the future effort, able to read opportunities well, actively seeking new ideas, persistent in running their business And barriers faced by SMEs Tofu "RDS" can be overcome well by the leadership of SMEs Tofu RDS.

This research is used to study engineering undergraduates fostering their mathematical creativity during creative problem solving. This was an exploratory research carried out in a public university as to find out the impact of CPS towards mathematical creativity among the engineering undergraduates. A case study was used to provide deep exploration of how the engineering undergraduates using their creative methods to solve open-ended mathematical problems creatively. Qualitative research design was applied in order to understand in depth the engineering undergraduates working collaboratively to generate their creative ideas during mathematical problem solving. Three final years engineering undergraduates took part in the study.  They had to use their divergent and convergent thinking to generate creative methods to solve twelve open-ended mathematical problems. Qualitative research design of case study was used in this study to explore the engineering undergraduates using creative methods to solve open-ended mathematical problems during creative problem solving processes. By analyzing the data collected from the case study can provide in-depth and detail understanding of the creative processess and products of the research. Observation and recording sheets were used to collect all the data. SCAMPER was also used as a guideline for them to spark their creaivity. All the qualitative data of drawing from documents, videotape from observation and snapshot texts from recording sheets were collected and then analyzed. They were coded and categorized into different themes in order to find out the mathematical creativity among the engineering undergraduates. The results in this study shows that the engineering undergraduates were able to generate different creative methods with the help of the SCAMPER.

The present study intends to investigate the use of substitution in students’ expository texts. It covers the types of substitution used by the students in their expository texts and the contribution of substitution to the texts’ cohesion. This study uses qualitative research through case study design. The participants in this study are nine students of twelfth grade in a public senior high school in Kuningan. The data in the present study are the documents of students’ expository texts. The data are analyzed by using the frameworks of cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The findings indicate that there is only one substitution found in this study namely nominal substitution. The present study also delineates that the use of substitution contributes to the process of avoiding repetition and text redundancy. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the use and the contribution of substitution in students’ expository texts are still considered low. Thus, the encouragement is very necessary for the students to use appropriate substitution to make their texts more cohesive.

YouTube videos play a vital role as powerful educational resources for language learning and cultural understanding. Using authentic YouTube videos to develop students’ writing skills is not often applied, especially at tertiary level. The paper discusses the reasons YouTube should be used as inside and outside of classroom writing activities. Then the research design offers a review of literature relating to the use of YouTube videos in various fields of language education. Methods to implement the research including research tools and steps taken for data analysis are also recommended. The article ends with limitation of the use of YouTube videos and suggestions for further studies of the topic.

This study was designed to explore the perception and experiences of motivation of teacher educators of the universities of Sindh province of Pakistan. The data was collected and analysed through case study approach, the qualitative research design and thematic-narrative analysis technique. The total twenty-one teacher educators revealed their stories in the form of narratives about their motivation. The findings of this article would be found suitable, authentic and reliable resource, which would be an excellent addition in to the existing literature of motivation in order to understand the phenomenon, its process and causations.

This study deals with the language  communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and introvert students at Politeknik LP3i Medan. It uses qualitative research design with a single case study to gain an understanding on this study. It is conducted descriptively. This study aims to find out the types of communication strategies in conversation used by introvert students of Politeknik LP3i Medan. The subjects were 10 persons of introvert and of Politeknik LP3I Medan. The use of instruments in this study were observation ,interview and documentation. The observation were the types of communication strategies in conversation used by extrovert and  introvert students of Politeknik LP3i Medan. The interview was used to in depth the data. The theories of Celce-Murcia was used in this study. The data were analyzed by Spradley (1979) analysis. The result of the study there were three reason of communication strategy were used by students of Politeknik LP3I Medan. The development of information technology affects students in searching and finding information, particularly information regarding the General Election. Theexplosion of information on mass media about the elections resulted impact (both positive and negative) to the potential voters. Nowadays, media plays role as a tool for political parties to lead public opinion to support their parties. Based on the data provided by General Election Commission (KPU) in 2014, 20% of voters were identified as students (teens). This is a qualitative research with case study methodwhich aims to gain insight about interpretation, understanding, perceptions and feelings of teenage voters’ behavior in searching and finding information about general election in Indonesia year 2014. The data were collected by conducting interview and observation. Informants (six persons) in this study were students, aged 17-18 years, who studying in government senior high school in Depok. The results of this study indicates that informants using social media to keep update about general election. Besides, they also gain information from their parents and close friends. Unfortunatelly, they were not able to identify which information which are correct or not, so they rely on people around them to make sure whether they did right decision. Therefore, this study also suggest that KPU needs to develop promotion strategy that suitable for teens about general election.
