The rapid, exponential fusion of technologies which profoundly disrupts all industries and processes is commonly described as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4th IR). The Built Environment (BE) sector has long been overdue for radical transformation that is symphonious with global trends. Consequently, how to incorporate 4th IR in BE education remains challenging. This research aims to establish what educational methods, context, tools, and technological pedagogy are required and should be adopted, as well as what the effects and outcomes can be expected from the incorporation of the 4th IR concepts in BE education. The rationale for this research stems from the aspiration to meet the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals, which advocate that young people need to be "future-ready" and this includes digital fluency and ICT literacy. The study utilised a verifiable and reproducible systematic literature review of digital education; with analysis and scrutiny of 582 academic articles for the co-occurrence of keywords, using a mixed bibliographic and bibliometric method. Through clustering analysis based on the bibliometric method, the key elements, outcomes, and their interconnections of incorporating 4th IR in BE education were outlined. The paper revealed that, in adopting 4th IR, Higher education, Design, Innovation and Privacy appear to be the predominant context. Distance education, Collaborative learning and Digital learning are the foremost education methods. Digital technologies, Virtual reality and cloud computing are the most significant education tools and technology elements. Sustainable education, Ethical learning and Student engagement are the resultant primary outcomes of incorporating 4th IR in built environment education. In addition, the results of the interconnections of indicators analysis revealed Higher education, Distance education and Sustainable education are significantly intertwined with Digital technologies. Based on the taxonomy of key elements and outcomes and the analysis of their interconnections, a conceptual framework for adopting 4th IR in built environment education was developed

PurposeThis paper aimed to explore the development of distance education (DE) in Chinese higher education as well as the three significant themes: accessibility, quality and equity in Chinese DE and the performance of these three themes in Chinese DE.Design/methodology/approachDocument analysis was used as the major research method in this study to examine the development and challenges in terms of accessibility, quality and equity in Chinese DE. In this study, national-level official policy documents and reports from the Chinese government were collected and analyzed. Also, scientific articles from CNKI were analyzed to find out the evolution of the Frontier topics on Chinese DE in accessibility, quality and equity.FindingsThere are three major findings. First, the Chinese government has shown its positive attitude toward DE in higher education. Second, compared with the other two themes: quality and equity; the number of articles in the accessibility of DE was lower than the other two themes and the problems of accessing online courses were insufficiently caused by two reasons due to lack of basic ICT literacy and poor Internet infrastructure. Third, there was a gap between Chinese policies and research articles mainly because of the unbalanced development of accessibility in policy management and research articles.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough this paper has summarized the development of the DE in Chinese higher education, it was clear that accessibility, quality and equity were three critical issues in DE. However, there are still other essential factors that contribute to the development of DE that requires further investigation, such as learner satisfaction, different features of learning platforms and instructional strategy.Practical implicationsThe findings of this paper can be used to identify the attitude toward the DE of the Chinese government. Besides, the accessibility could be a research and practical focus for Chinese DE in the future.Originality/valueThis study showed some significant policies released by the Chinese government toward DE in higher education and revealed the achievements, trends and challenges in the accessibility, quality and equity of Chinese DE.

Computer systems and technologies are changing our society significantly. These changes are interconnected with both social and production spheres. Innovative digital technologies have a huge impact on the labor market and professional activity, contributing to their transfer to the electronic environment. Using digital technologies, modern people set new goals and solve problems with an increasing speed of problem solving, capitalizing on the possibilities of collaborative distributed actions within networks. In this regard, new competencies of specialists are in demand. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish the impact of the fourth industrial revolution on the education system and the development of skills and thinking for learning. Methods: When conducting scientific research, economic and statistical methods were used. These methods were also used in comparative analysis, as well as in assessing data and indicators of the higher education system, taking into account the impact of the fourth industrial revolution. The analytical method was used to consider the characteristics and factors influencing the development of skills and thinking for learning in modern conditions. The abstract-logical method is used to identify problems affecting the development of the labor market under the influence of digital technologies. Results and their value: The result of the study is that conclusions are drawn about the upcoming changes. Automation and digitalization are likely to lead to significant unemployment in most countries, so adaptation innovation policies are needed to help offset unemployment due to digitalization. Governments need to invest heavily in higher education as an economic development tool for their citizens. Lifelong learning should be identified as a critical element of success in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. Curricula should develop digital skills and address workforce disruptions due to automation.

The increasing use of multimedia in learning resources in higher education poses a challenge for learners with hearing disabilities, unless these are accompanied by transcripts or captions. This paper reports on a small study where six Automatic Transcription Software (ATS) were analysed for their accuracy. Although economical and timesaving, at present, it seems an automatically generated transcript is not yet accurate enough to be an accessibility aid for the subjects relating to built environment sector.

This paper focuses on the use of interactive technologies and distance learning in sustainable education. It discusses how remote learning technologies can positively influence students’ learning and entry in sustainable education. The paper looks at the use of distance learning in higher education as a means to help students in the built environment and its use within the education system. It studies and expands the theoretical research on the benefits of distance learning, where the study is remote and there is no personal contact with staff or students, and examines the impact of distance learning on the student’s learning experience. It also proposes and evaluates potential solutions to overcome the barriers to learning in the built environment and create successful virtual learning communities, recognising that such improvements must be reconciled with the primary benefits identified. The paper provides an overview of sustainable distance learning within higher education and discusses the differences between learning outside the structural environment of a profession, what it means for the student’s learning experience and the potential to overcome barriers to distance learning. This is a very timely topic in the times of COVID-10 pandemic. Lockdowns of the economy and social life impacted all spheres of education with schools and universities closed for long periods of time and all teaching moved to online and distance mode. However, coronavirus pandemic also brought the digital surge in the system of education, including the sustainable education. All these innovations might stay after the pandemic and help the education to evolve and to embrace more novel trends and technologies.

This chapter addresses the position of learning, teaching, and assessment in education with the particular emphasis on higher education (HE) in the built environment (BE) but also embeds the context of the contemporary approaches that have emerged in the BE which are built on a solid educational underpinning. The conceptions of “active learning” are addressed from the perspective of what the literature refers to but also some significant reference to action research adopted, rolled out, and evaluated in undergraduate built environment education by the author. The “learning by doing” mantra of among the BE educational community has begun to make inroads. There is a more engaging approach from academics to support learners. An identification of the areas where improvement may be achieved into the future and the possible areas where research might be explored to address and solve some of these pertinent issues.

AbstractA much-cited article on the website “Inside Higher ED” outlines fifteen scenarios for higher education in the coming period (Malony and Kim, www.insidehighered.com/digital-learning/blogs/learning-innovation/15-fall-scenarios; 2020). The continuum ranges from education completely back to normal to education completely at a distance. Full return to normal is not on the horizon; full distance education is possible but not optimal for most educational programs; and somewhere in between is quite a challenge. However, it is striking that the continuum focuses entirely on official educational activities and that there is no attention for informal educational activities: a neglect that is reflected in the current discussions about the future of our education. This chapter is about this neglect and the proposition is that the coronavirus crisis offers significant opportunities for a “new educational common” at Tilburg University in this respect.

Recently, the digitalization phenomenon has been trending upwards globally. This term has occupied all spheres of our lives, including education. Along with global tendencies and calls of the Industrial Revolution, 4.0 national projects outlined by the president in the particular project “Digital economy” have provided many impulses to the Digitalization of education.This research paper is mainly devoted to exploring digital education and digital learning in Russia's realities today. The author utilizes the current situation with lockdown and, therefore, distance education and learning to try to shed light on some aspects of educational Digitalization. The article provides a theoretical discussion of the irreversibility and necessity of Digitalization of education, its components, stages, structure, advantages, and disadvantages; of what has been done and what is to be done in this field. The author also provides empirical data of studying Kazan Federal University students in foreign language classes during distance education and learning period. Remarkably, the article offers some insight into students’ readiness for the digital era, evaluating their digital literacy and digital skills and competencies, their motivation to keep on studying while on distance, their abilities to take responsibility for their learning as well as some issues challenging students during distance learning.

The present study investigates the motivation for adult participation in distance education on sustainability and specializes in a population group with specific characteristics, that of the Agronomists (Higher Education Graduates). In a global community with shifting conditions, environmental problems and geometrically increasing demands regarding the qualifications of workers and especially the scientists dealing with these problems, this issue is considered of major importance while exploring the incentives that lead to participation – after acquiring the first degree – continuing education and learning, and in particular distance education on sustainable development, is essential. The result so that Agronomists feel a strong need to extend their knowledge mainly through distance education.
