AbstractIn this article, we critically discuss the notion of Anthropocene and its sociopolitical implications for science and environmental education. We do so by laying out how the Anthropocene discourse has shaped the debates around development, environment, and technoscience in postcolonial India. Subsequently, we shift to a conversational format wherein each of us deliberate on our engagements as critical science educators, discussing how, in our respective work, we find the official curriculum promoting the Anthropocene discourse. We then discuss ways by which the Anthropocene discourse constitutes student subjectivities in terms of the nature of their values and aspirations. While engaging in this dialogue, we find ourselves reimagining alternatives.

It is now widely acknowledged that the impact of human activities on environment is significant and will have serious consequences for future generations. Environment education has a significant role in making the youth conscious about their environment, adopting green social behaviour and thus responding to the environment crises. Recognizing the importance and need of environment education, India has initiated several efforts including making the environment education compulsory at all level of education. Today when environmental conditions are changing adversely and all living beings are suffering from the negative consequences of environmental pollution and climate changes, there is a need to reorient the curriculum of environment education for making it more attractive and responsive to the local environmental issues. Moreover, related policies are also needed to be restructured for sensitizing the people, especially school and college level students about the issues related to environment management.

Because they hold the purse strings, administrators, legislators, and donors rank among the most important audiences for research explanations. Reaching out to administrators requires understanding their concerns and activities. Cultivating donors and foundations requires understanding their information needs, which can be more individualistic, even eccentric, than those of government funding agencies. The key to success in working with them is to coordinate with development officers. Lobbying legislators effectively means understanding their needs for concise communications that convey how a piece of research impacts five areas: economy, security, environment, education, and freedom/values. Working with policy staff can be highly productive in advancing a legislative agenda.
