Abstract Falls are a leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in older adults. Older adult participation in community-based falls prevention programs can significantly reduce falls risk, however, identifying and referring individuals to appropriate programs can be challenging. Through Administration for Community Living (ACL) funding, we have developed a comprehensive Dartmouth Falls Prevention Training Program for healthcare and community based organizations that includes (1) Falls screening in primary care; (2) “Balance Days”, a community-based education and balance screening event encompassing falls risk stratification and coaching into programs; (3) Instructor Training for Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance®, a highly effective falls prevention program; and (4) Implementation Training, a research informed workshop shown to enhance community-based program sustainability through participant retention. We will share strategies for sustainable collaborations between primary care and CBOs to reach at-risk individuals and improve lives and decrease costs associated with falls.

Abstract Research shows that men in the U.S. experience significant morbidity and earlier mortality than women and are less likely to access, interpret, and apply health information to improve their outcomes. Although evidence-based health promotion programs have proven successful at increasing healthy lifestyle behaviors and reducing morbidity among older adults, older males are still significantly less likely to enroll and sustain participation in such health interventions. While studies have shown the barriers and facilitators to older adult participation in health programs in general, it is largely unknown why older male recruitment and participation in health promotion interventions remains so low. In this poster presentation, we conducted a thorough review of the last 20 years of existing research across a variety of academic search databases to outline the barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for increasing older male participation in health promotion programs. Of 1,194 initial search results, 383 article abstracts were thoroughly screened for inclusion, and 26 articles met all inclusion criteria. Included studies were coded and analyzed using Grounded Theory and reveal that masculine gender roles, as well as program scope, environment, and gender of the instructors and other participants, were important factors for male participation. Interventions should include men in all aspects of program planning and implementation, take into account men’s existing relationships and interests to create gender-sensitive programming, and clearly delineate the benefits to participation. Lastly, the field of public health would benefit by helping to normalize men’s participation in health promotion interventions.

Abstract Older adult participation in lifelong learning programs – such as university continuing education opportunities and the Age-Friendly University global network – has grown steadily over the last few years. Many of these programs are characterized by mixed-age classrooms in which undergraduate students share space and learning, remotely during Covid, with older adult participants who pay a nominal fee. Survey findings will be presented from older students involved in two university programs in this category: Temple University’s “senior scholars” program and Georgetown University’s “senior auditors” program, specifically related to the concept of adult study abroad. Adult study abroad is a new offering that combines the intellectual and social benefits of stimulating coursework with the transformative power of travel, and how the merging of these pursuits can produce purpose, meaning and community, especially for older adults. It is typically residential, academic, intergenerational, and of longer duration than a typical tourist experience.

Lifelong learning is a key element of the conceptual framework of active aging. To understand how older adults experience active aging through participation in lifelong learning, the authors conducted a qualitative case study. The research participants were older adult learners attending evening schools aiming to pass the equivalency examination. Data were collected primarily using semi-structured interviews with five older adult learners, and additional data were collected from relevant documents. Data analysis and thematic discussion provided insights into how older adults experience active aging by participating in lifelong learning. Data analysis identified themes of overcoming limited education, taking the equivalency examination, and evolving goals. Thematic discussion revealed that older adults began learning to meet deficiency needs; however, they developed their goals after attending evening schools and passing the equivalency examination. In addition, lifelong learning is an indispensable element of active aging not only because learning is good for older adults’ wellbeing, as reported in the literature, but also because older adults become more active in the systemic change of their environment and in the setting goals for their lives.

A common rationale for the continued existence and support of music education in schools has been the development of skills and attitudes leading to a lifetime of music-making for all students. Therefore, the purpose of this review of literature was to examine previous research on adult participation in large ensemble (i.e., band, choir, or orchestra) community music settings. The research literature included in this study was summarized and presented according to three broad categories: (a) status studies of both demographic information and the music backgrounds of large ensemble community music participants; (b) the motivations encouraging or discouraging such participation; and (c) potential issues, both concrete and philosophical, in what Jellison (2000) termed the transition between school-based music and that of the adult world. Implications for music educators and potential ideas for future research are discussed.

A common claim about the affluent democracies is that protest is trending, becoming more legitimate and widely used by all political contenders. In the new democracies, protest is seen as having contributed to democratization, but growing apathy has led to protest decline while in authoritarian regimes protest may be spurring more democratization. Assessing these ideas requires comparative trend data covering 15 or more years but constructing such data confronts problems. The major problem is that the most available survey item asks “have you ever joined (lawful) demonstrations,” making it difficult to time when this protest behavior occurred. We advance a novel method for timing these “ever” responses by focusing on young adults (aged 18-23 years), who are likely reporting on participation within the past 5 years. Drawing on the Survey Data Recycling harmonized data set, we use a multilevel model including harmonization and survey quality controls to create predicted probabilities for young adult participation (576 surveys, 119 countries, 1966-2010). Aggregating these to create country-year rate estimates, these compare favorably with overlapping estimates from surveys asking about “the past 5 years or so” and event data from the PolDem project. Harmonization and survey quality controls improve these predicted values. These data provide 15+ years trend estimates for 60 countries, which we use to illustrate the possibilities of estimating comparative protest trends.

Playfulness in adulthood has been shown to be un-researched scientific issue. We believe that it is because of earlier non-recognition of this issue as a special field of study, but also the existence of a popular belief that the playful activities are reserved only for children. Just because of the lack of initiative and coherent researches that take into account playful activities in adulthood and characteristic of playfulness as a personal trait this research can be considered as the first research of that kind in the Republic of Serbia. The aim of this research is to determine adult perceptions of their playfulness and dominant cognitive qualities of playfulness. Adult Playfulness Trait Scale was used (APTS, Shen, Chick & Zin, 2014) to explore adult playfulness and inherent cognitive characteristic of this personal trait. Research sample consists of 1234 adult individuals aged from 18 to above 60 years from a cities and villages of Serbian area. The results of this research show that respondents recognize and highly value all tree sub-dimensions of playfulness trait: fun-seeking motivation, uninhibitedness and spontaneity. An important finding of this research is one that indicates on the characteristics of fun-seeking motivation sub-dimension as dominant one.

AbstractThis conclusive chapter offers a few proposals to contribute to the necessary overcoming of the current polarization in the debate: adult-centric arguments could be renovated by focusing on the child as the protagonist of reproduction and representative of tomorrow’s humanity; adult participation in surrogacy could be understood as the result of decision-making influenced by social values of self-determination, with any support or condemnation of surrogacy being grounded on considerations about the social impact of surrogacy and child’s protection and not on the immediate personal benefits that it gives to the adults; the ideal goal of eliminating surrogacy can coexist with pragmatic restrictive regulatory initiatives; monitoring both the surrogates and children’s health and well-being, along with the quantification of surrogacy births are priority objectives to be achieved regardless of prohibitionist or regulatory orientations; inform women who are targets of recruitment about medical and legal risks and individual as well as social implications of surrogacy for their life and for children; single issue campaigns focused on the child and woman’s health can offer platforms of dialogue and mobilization for social movements which on other themes (e.g. abortion, same-sex couples parenting, and women empowerment) have different and even opposing views.

Abstract The University of Maine is embarking on achieving AFU status. In addition to maximizing older adult participation in all facets of campus life (education, recreation, culture, etc.), their presence in nontraditional sectors of university activity will be emphasized. Building on the principles of community-based, participatory research, focal points of UMaine’s AFU strategy will be to ensure that age-specific, engagement mechanisms are created and maintained that ensure older citizens play an influential role in guiding and interpreting academic research and development and curricula innovation across multiple professions and disciplines. Using a state-wide, older adult research registry, and co-design, community test-beds in partnership with continuing care retirement communities, older adults will serve as citizen scientists. Other empowerment strategies for maximizing elder voice include expanding the number of departments that incorporate life span perspectives in their mission statements and expanding the number of older adult advisory bodies that inform university policy and practice.

Abstract Population aging, together with increases in life expectancy, women’s employment, dual-earner households, and unraveling safety nets, are transforming the demography of work and retirement in the later life course. A seemingly obvious policy solution is to encourage Boomers and those following to work longer, postponing retirementt. And yet there is insufficient understanding of factors that predict ongoing older adult participation in paid work. The simple work/retirement dichotomy no longer fits the experience of growing numbers of Americans. Drawing on census data, I show six such pathways differing by age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Needed is policy development recognizing the new realities of different and unequal pathways. The challenge is recognizing disparities in capacities and constraints among our aging population, along with the need to change the way we work, opening up flexible options in order to enable working longer.
