Textbook evaluation is considered an important factor in the field of education from the aspect of teachers and learners. The current examination aims to evaluate the Oxford Progressive English textbook for 8th class. The current study aims to probe strong and weak points in the given coursebook. Besides, whether the textbook should be accepted or rejected will also be explored in this study. As for research methodology, the nature of the present research is of descriptive qualitative. The sample for the evaluation is the Oxford Progressive English text for the 8th class Checklist method and an impressionistic method “as an instrument will be used for evaluating the ELT material. The following “Checklist” was used to evaluate the textbook. Sheldon’s checklist has been used as an instrument of the research. The data has been collected from the textbook on the 8th. The findings of the study show that almost the merits and demerits of the textbook are equal. Demerits include a lack of focus on language skills and sub-skills. Other aspects of language learning have also been ignored, for example: need analysis, learners' age, background, learning style, examination equivalence, self –revision exercises, achievement test, self-checks, supplementary material, audiovisual recording. This study concludes that the school management should replace or revise the contents of the textbook.

The needs analysis cannot be separated from the development of materials and curriculum design for language learning, especially ESP. The research about ESP, especially the topic of need analysis still needs to be explored. Thus, this research aims to identify language skills needed and develop English teaching materials at Politeknik Gihon. The subjects of this study were 45 ongoing students and six former students. The result of the study revealed the perceptions of the students’ needs for their current studies and future career and how the English material should be designed in this institution. This study contributes in developing the teaching material and proposed a redesigned of ESP course.

Language learning in the era of industrial revolution 4.0 is also influenced by technology information development, for example, on using an application in the teaching and learning process. The application is usually using as a medium for improving language skills or language components, such as vocabulary. One application is efficient and effective in teaching the Arabic language, especially Arabic language vocabulary is a Macromedia flash 8 application. The application can be used to solve the problem which still constraint the Arabic teacher and also the students. This article aims to research the Macromedia flash 8 application in learning Arabic vocabularies. This research used a research design method with procedures, need analysis, application design, application implementation, application evaluation, and application validation. The subject of this research was Islamic junior student's grade IX. The result showed that Macromedia flash 8 application was effective in improving students’ vocabulary, especially related to Islamic fasting, Ied Al-Adha, and hobby. They were presented using text, graphics, and animation.

This project proposes the use of Task-Based Learning worksheets which have been developed as a supplementary  material based on the Our World through English 1 in order to improve students’ language skills by accessing multiple intelligences learners. Nineteen students in their eighth year of Basic Education at Cornelio Crespo Toral School participated in this study for fifteen months. Data is collected from a pre-test, a post-test, and a questionnaire. The results show the improvement of students’ language learning skills by 24.04%.  At the end of the study, the participants developed a sense of motivation, awareness, and increased their language learning skills through the application of the Task- Based Learning worksheets. Teachers recognized the effectiveness of new strategies and techniques implemented in their classes by applying appropriate materials to improve learning skills based on dominant intelligences.

The main elements of teaching are included teachers, students, and textbooks. Many people argue that the students are the key success of the teaching. Thinking to against that many people belief, many studies pointed the view that textbooks are the key of learning. It based on the assumption that both teacher and students are depend on the book in learning process. Therefore, great care and attention to the quality of text-book itself has to be taken in selecting the most appropriate textbook that fit to some factors as teacher’s interests, teaching objectives and finally students’ needs as well. Textbook evaluation checklist by Daoud and Celce-Murcia (1979) is used in this study because it is most appropriate for evaluating this current textbook. In this current study, the researcher evaluated K-13 English text book used by XII grade students of MAN 1 Bojonegoro as instructional material in the teaching and learning. Some aspects to be evaluated based on Textbook evaluation checklist by Daoud and Celce-Murcia (1979) including subject matter, vocabulary and structures, exercises, illustration, and physical make-up. This study is important as it hope will find out the strength as well as the weaknesses areas of the course book. This current study has been developed in order to analyze an available specialized course book for the second grade students. The results of the current study have important implications both for language teachers and the improvement of the course book

This paper aims to find out (1) Learning needs of the students, (2) Language needs of the students, and (3) Design an appropriate English syllabus based on the students’ need. The researcher applied descriptive quantitative method. This research used some techniques in selecting the sample. Those are purposive sampling and convenience sampling. The subject consist to two groups, they were the nursing students of Stikes Mega Buana Palopo and graduate students who work in Hospital. The result of this research showed that (1) learning needs consist of language skills and learning preferences. In language skills, all the language skills are used at the rate of often in the classroom. In learning preferences of learning English with others, study in pairs is preferred than study alone, and study in small group is more preferred than study in big group while learning preferences in terms of learning by using teaching technique, study by listening and pronouncing, and  by using games and  role play are mostly preferred by the students. (2) Language needs consist of the use of English in workplace. regarding to use English in workplace, the graduates students hardly ever speak English in hospital. In language function, based on the graduates’ perspective about language function, all the categories fall into important  level that used in hospital. (3) The syllabus design was based on the students’ need where it includes, topic, language function, teaching strategies, and language focus. Key Words: Need analysis, Syllabus, Teaching Materials, Learning Needs, Learning Style, Language Function, Teaching Strategies, and Language focus.

In recent years, educators have started to use innovative pedagogies in response to the changing trends of language learning towards developing great proficiency, as the conventional approaches could no longer improve proficiency due to the interactive nature of language skills. Therefore, it is believed that the Flipped Learning (FL) approach, as one of these new pedagogies, can be appropriately used to enhance language skills due to its hybrid nature. On the other hand, the existing literature on the efficacy of the FL approach has mostly ignored psychological factors like motivation, personality traits, and learning styles. Thus, the current study aimed to see which learning styles fitted better in the FL approach. Further, it intended to explore which language skill and in which learning style the amount of improvement could be significant. Forty Iranian EFL learners took the PET pre-test and were divided into their preferred learning styles. Then, they underwent the FL approach for a semester. The results of the paired samples T-Test indicated a significant positive improvement in the students’ performance in the post-test (t (39) = −7.698, p = .000). The results of the One-way ANOVA showed that there were significant differences among learning style groups in favor of the visual style, (F (4, 35) = 2.299, p = .034), and Mixed ANOVA results indicated that the most significant difference among skills was found between speaking and writing skills, (F (3, 105) = 8.018, p = .000).

Textbooks play significant role in teaching and learning continuum. Due to this reason, Curriculum wings and Directorate of staff development (Punjab) have had continuous check and monitoring in devising goals and standards in textbooks from grade 1 to grade 10. But at intermediate level specially in12th grade, the same text book i.e. Good-bye Mr. Chips is being taught more than 20 years. It is assumed that there lies a huge literacy and learning gap between the secondary level English textbooks and intermediate level English textbooks. The present study keeping in view the issues and gaps in mind was an attempt to investigate the importance of English textbooks being taught at intermediate level (Grade 12) in different schools and colleges in Punjab. Prospective study occupies descriptive type of research framework. The textbook of English being taught at intermediate level is evaluated according to specified models and strategies mentioned in previous research studies based upon textbook evaluation. Sample was determined through applying cluster random sampling technique. Questionnaire was designed, validated and administered after conducting pilot phase. The findings of the study reveal that the textbook being taught at intermediate level is not be up to snuff to convene the common objectives of the target language and is irreconcilable with the requirements of promoting confidence and ornamental language skills. Moreover, it is recommended that textbooks must be revised from time to time to obtain definite language learning objectives. The book being evaluated lacks innovation, students’ interest, relevant content and appropriate skills.


English for Academic Purposes course focusing on the academic language needs of students is a subfield of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). It is a type of specialized course to integrate specific subject matter, language content, and material based on learners’ needs. The study aims to evaluate the British Council’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) coursebook in terms of content, sequencing, learners’ autonomy, motivation, feedback and focus on language skills. Furthermore, the study tries to provide a general perception of the usefulness and effectiveness of the coursebook for undergraduate students. The EAP Students’ Manual coursebook is used as a primary source for the data collection. The researcher has chosen Nation & Macalister (2010) model of language teaching principles to analyze and discuss the data. The study found the coursebook a useful, effective and an appropriate source of English language learning in terms of the investigated aspects of the book. The findings report that the coursebook provides practice and practical usage in all domains of the academically required English language skills. It helps the students to build language competency and to be more independent learners. In addition, it provides an opportunity to the learners to think in the target language, use the language more practically and learn it in a natural type of environment. The study concludes and suggests that the content needs to be supplemented with English language audios and videos presenting the students relevant documentaries and helping material in order to make the coursebook and the learning process more useful, effective, interesting and motivating. Furthermore, the study recommends that while choosing /designing a coursebook for a certain course, it needs to be evaluated following the various criteria and language-teaching-principles suggested by different language researchers.

AbstractThe objective of this paper is to develop an simulation model able to test different language education orientations and their consequences for the EU population in terms of linguistic disenfranchisement, that is, the inability of citizens to understand EU documents and parliamentary discussions should their native language(s) no longer be official. I will focus on the impact of linguistic distance and language learning. Ideally, this model would be a tool to help EU policy makers make informed decisions about language practices and education policies, taking into account their consequences in terms of diversity and linguistic disenfranchisement. The model can be used to force agents to make certain choices in terms of language skills acquisition. The user can then go on to compare different scenarios in which language skills are acquired according to different rationales. The idea is that, by forcing agents to adopt certain language learning strategies, the model user can simulate policies promoting the acquisition of language skills and get an idea of their impact. In this way, the model allows not only to sketch various scenarios of the evolution of language skills among EU citizens, but also to estimate the level of disenfranchisement in each of these scenarios.
