The article focuses on the role of innovation as a precondition for using integrated transport systems and introducing intelligent transport systems to achieve greater efficiency and sustainable development in regions. Several examples of regional projects for the deployment of intelligent transport systems and the use of intermodal transport in the European Union have been examined. On the basis of the conducted comparisons and analyses, a proposal has been made for the construction of an intermodal hub on the territory of the Vidin region and the establishment of a unified information system within the Danube region, which will strengthen transport connectivity, cross-border cooperation and the integration of the less developed regions of the eastern part of the Danube region.

Abstract Mobilising knowledges across a geography creates opportunities for transitions to smart systems. Publics in a geography are consequently able to form their perspectives around a system and align potential benefits with their needs. Intelligent transport systems are an example of smart living and EVs are cited as an alternative technology that are key to their application. This conceptual paper uses EVs as an example to demonstrate how knowledge mobilisation relating to such technologies can better cater to a geography’s needs. Unfortunately, current EV studies focus on a rural-urban binary. Thus, this conceptual contribution reflects on a study in Cornwall, UK, to reveal the heterogeneous influences on rural EV-related perspectives. This heterogeneity manifests both in particular locations and across cases. Overall a suite of transferrable participatory methods to improve rural knowledge mobilisation is outlined.

Abstract Reducing the number of road accident victims is a declared purpose of the European Union. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are able to contribute to this by warning and supporting the drivers, therefore improving road safety. The aim of our research was to analyze the safety aspects of ITS systems, structuring the solutions, analyzing and exploring the opportunities for development. Strategic objectives have been evaluated and relevant processes for achieving them have been summarized. The research efficiently contributes to the utilization of development potentials of ITS systems.

The article examines the prospects for organizing a cluster as an effective tool for ensuring connectivity of territories of the Russian Federation through the systematic and integrated implementation of intelligent transport technologies, which corresponds to strategic directions of development of transport in the Russian Federation and determines the relevance of the topic. The objective of the study is to determine the features of organisation of the transport and logistics cluster prioritising development of intelligent transport technologies by analysing the prospects for their development, studying variability of characteristics and structure of the cluster under various conditions of its formation based on the methods of formal logic, grouping, analysis of statistical data, normative-legal information, information synthesis. The study resulted in identification of prerequisites for the most rapid development and effective implementation of intelligent transport systems within the cluster. The expediency of using this approach has been substantiated, despite its labour intensity and cost. The study suggests definitions of an innovative transport and logistics cluster, as wells as characteristics of the transport and logistics cluster prioritising intelligent transport technologies. The study revealed the specifics of organisation of this cluster, which is primarily determined by the presence of dual characteristics. The peculiarities of cluster formation are reflected in the proposed structure of the cluster under study. The role of the state in organizing an innovative transport and logistics cluster is also defined

The deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is a strategic decision for the European Union (EU). Through the integration of ITS in their transportation national strategy, the EU Member States can move decisively towards the achievement of the targets that have been set for a cleaner, safer and more efficient transport system. Moreover, the adoption of systems and services, that have been developed in other countries, and their induction in the national ITS frameworks can facilitate the interoperable and coordinated deployment of ITS and ensure the effort for the targets’ achievement. This paper examines the possibilities of transferring in Greece the knowledge gained by three systems which have been developed in other three South East Europe (SEE) countries and defines guidelines for their future deployment in Greece.

The situation with the development of intelligent transport systems (ITS) in Russia is characterized. The main problems of the development of ITS in our country are considered. The main attention is paid to organizational reasons, such as the insufficient role of the state, the lack of a strategic vision for the development of intelligent transport systems and the integration of ITS elements of various levels and owners, the underdevelopment of the industry business, imperfect mechanisms for the creation and operation of ITS, a lack of qualified personnel. Proposals for their solution are given, as well as priority measures necessary to accelerate the development of ITS in Russia.

The attention of the supranational level to transboundary regions increased with the development of regional policy. The reform of the European structural funds, the concepts of equalization and identification of the endogenous potential of regions led to the intensification of cross-border cooperation. Of course, this is not only the merit of the European Union; the growth of Euroregions stimulated financial support, and this led to a new round of growth of Euroregions in the EU territories. The purpose of the article is to determine problems of transformational aspects for elaborating and improving the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region up to the condition of its possible implementation, as well as propose specific measures for its step-by-step implementation until 2020. The European Grouping for Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) is another initiative created in the zonal field of Euroregions for greater cohesion with the supranational level. Most of the EGTC members are located in Eastern and Southern Europe. Moreover, if on the early stages EGTC were projects for the implementation of exclusively cross-border cooperation, then since 2012 they began to be created as platforms for cooperation between cities of different EU member states. EU regions are very diverse from a cultural and historical point of view and have different levels of socio-economic development. In the Danube region over the past two decades, fundamental changes have occurred, taking this into account, the article highlights several strategic directions of development. 1) Geographical association of Europe and the East. There is a huge potential for the development of existing transport and trade links. 2) The developed infrastructural architecture of the education system. Including different universities, but the quality of training varies. Education and training should be linked to the needs of the labour market, along with supporting student mobility throughout the entire Danube region. 3) The presence of millennial traditions of cultural, ethnic, and natural diversity. The presence of large cities and world heritage sites, including the concentration of capitals and cultural centres. This requires a modern approach to tourism offers and infrastructure so that both the guest and the host can get profit from this activity. 4) The ability to optimize and improve the use of renewable energy sources, such as water, wind biomass, thermal springs. There are also wide opportunities for improving energy efficiency by enhancing the efficiency of energy demand management and modernizing building and logistics. These measures will facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy. 5) Availability of natural wealth: unique fauna and flora, the most valuable water resources and unique landscapes (for example, the Danube Delta, the Carpathians). They must be in constant preservation and recovery. Each designated area contains priority recommendations in various fields of activity. The transformational optimization strategy proposed by the author provides a stable framework for the policy of integration and cohesive development of the Danube region. It establishes priority areas aimed at creating the EU Region of the 21st century.

The future generation of vehicles on the road is going to be driven by wire. To aid in this ‘electronic’ revolution in the vehicle, the role of wireless sensors and their interaction amongst themselves and with the environment is gaining importance. It is an area where the majority of research resources is allocated and being spent. For successful interaction of information from environment / vehicle, there is a need for wireless networking of the information from different sources. To keep pace with the development of wireless networks for intelligent transport systems, newer network architectures, protocols, and algorithms are being developed. This chapter sheds light on all these issues.
