Background: In the whole design process of modular fuel tank, there are some unreasonable phenomena. As a result, there are some defects in the design of modular fuel tank, and the function does not meet the requirements in advance. This paper studies this problem. Objective: Through on-the-spot investigation of the factory, a mechanical design process model is designed. The model can provide reference for product design participants on product design time and design quality, and can effectively solve the problem of low product design quality caused by unreasonable product design time arrangement. Methods: After sorting out the data from the factory investigation, computer software is used to program, simulate the information input of mechanical design process, and the final reference value is got. Results: This mechanical design process model is used to guide the design and production of a new project, nearly 3 months ahead of the original project completion time. Conclusion: This mechanical design process model can effectively guide the product design process, which is of great significance to the whole mechanical design field.

Design reuse is the application of past designs knowledge and successful experience to current design process and it is a significant method for rapid design. A knowledge-reuse-based rapid product design model is proposed and a three-factor product design iterative process model is studied. Finally, it is applied successfully in the rapid product design of construction machinery combining with the requirement of the construct machinery product design.

Personalization, the involvement of stakeholders in the design process, is often applied in serious game design for health. It is expected to enhance the alignment of a game to the preferences and capacities of the end-user, thereby increasing the end-user’s motivation to interact with the game, which finally might enhance the aimed-for health effects of the game. However, the nature and effect of personalization have never been systematically studied, making assumptions regarding personalization ungrounded. In this literature review, we firstly provide a proposal of our Personalized Design Process-model, where personalization is defined as stakeholder involvement in the Problem Definition-, Product Design- and/or Tailoring Phase. Secondly, we conducted a systematic literature review on this model, focusing on health and its effects. In this review, 62 of the 2579 found studies were included. Analysis showed that a minority of the studies were of methodologically higher quality and some of these tested the health effect by contrasting tailored versus non-tailored games. Most studies involved stakeholders in the Tailoring Design Phase. Therefore, we conclude that involving stakeholders in the Tailoring Phase is valuable. However, to know if personalization is effective in the Product Design- and the Problem Definition Phase, more studies are needed.

The emergence of computer and network technology has provided opportunities for researchers to construct and build systems to support dynamic, real-time, and collaborative engineering design in a concurrent manner. This paper provides an understanding of the product design in a distributed environment where designers are in different geographic locations and are required to be involved in the design process to ensure successful product design. A design process model that captures the major interactions among stakeholders is presented, based on the observation of cooperation and collaboration. The stakeholders’ interactions are divided into activity and system level to distinguish the interactions in group design activities and design perspective evolution. An initial computer implementation of the design model is presented. The design system consists of a set of tools associated with design and a management system to facilitate distributed designers to support various design activities, especially conceptual design. Our research emphasis of design collaboration in this paper is: (i) Model a Cooperative-collaborative design process; (ii) Support synchronized design activities; and (iii) Structure the complex relations of various design perspectives from engineering disciplines.

Risk management is an important element of product design. It helps to minimize the project- and product-related risks such as project budget and schedule overrun, or missing product cost and quality targets. Risk management is especially important for complex, international product design projects that involve a high degree of novel technology. This paper reviews the literature on risk management in product design. It examines the newly released international standard ISO 31000 “Risk management — Principles and guidelines” and explores its applicability to product design. The new standard consists of the seven process steps communication and consultation; establishing the context; risk identification; risk analysis; risk evaluation; risk treatment; and monitoring and review. A literature review reveals, among other findings, that the general ISO 31000 process model seems applicable to risk management in product design; the literature addresses different process elements to varying degrees, but none fully according to ISO recommendations; and that the integration of product design risk management with risk management of other disciplines, or between project and portfolio level in product design, is not well developed.

To build sustainable competitive advantage, being real customer-oriented, the integrated study of customer value guiding product design process research is proposed. By analyzing the connotation of customer value theory, the distinction between customer value-oriented product design and the traditional design is discussed. The basic principles of customer value-oriented product design are also put forward. Finally, the process model of customer value oriented product design, which consists of two parts, value design and concept design. According to this model, customer value space can be identified and path to creating and realizing customer value is given, enabling the practitioners to find new directions to create value for customers.

Through the analysis of the characteristics of design and material in cultural and creative industries, this study focuses on the urgent need for an appropriate product design with process model in cultural and creative industries. An innovative product design with Process Model in cultural and creative industries based on both the specific industrial characteristics and the interaction design idea is proposed. It includes the establishment of cultural elements library (focus on the application of the material symbols), proposition of cultural themes, extraction of cultural elements based on Kansei Engineering and implantation of cultural elements based on design semantics and semiotics, and especially the interaction design.

Outsourcing is not new in this ever changing world. It refers to the process of subcontracting a process, such as product design or manufacturing, to a third-party company. Today, the IT outsourcing industry has matured. This paper highlights about outsourcing with emphasis on its scope of operation, importance and impact in the business process and industry in general. This paper describes the unique approach in a university-based knowledge product outsourcing. It presents a discussion on the different resources in the operation and management of the university-based knowledge enterprise. The inception stage in the development of the outsourcing model is also described in this paper. The outsourcing process model presented in this paper highlights the following: faculty and staff as the knowledge provider, infrastructure as the outsourcing facility, business sector as the knowledge seeker, University-based as the business process, and product cost and income as the sharing of limited practice of profession. This paper further describes the features in the development of an online knowledge product outsourcing as a platform for an innovative knowledge enterprise.

Function design is an important step in the process of product design. This article mainly focuses on process and realization of product function innovation. Function innovation and forecasting method is presented, and the product function innovation process model is proposed. Finally, the heating equipment is taken as an example to validate the effectiveness of the model.
