The high demand for efficient energy devices leads to the rapid development of energy storage systems with excellent electrochemical properties, such as long life cycles, high cycling stability, and high power density. SC is postulated as a potential candidate to fulfill this demand. The combination of graphene and polyaniline can create SC electrodes with excellent electrical conductivity, high specific surface area, and high capacitance. The graphene/polyaniline hybrid electrodes represent an attractive means to overcome the major drawbacks of graphene or polyaniline non-hybrid (single) electrode materials. In this review article, the trend in the development of various graphene/polyaniline hybrid electrodes is summarized, which includes the zero-dimension graphene-quantum-dots/polyaniline hybrid, one-dimension graphene/polyaniline hybrid, two-dimension graphene/polyaniline hybrid, and three-dimension hydrogel-shaped graphene/polyaniline hybrid. Several strategies and approaches to enhance the capacitance value and cycling stability of graphene/polyaniline hybrid electrodes are discussed in this review article, such as the addition of transition metal oxides and metal-organic frameworks, and modification of graphene into functionalized-graphene. The performance of the electrodes prepared from the combination of graphene with other conducting polymers (i.e., polypyrrole, polythiophene, and polythiophene-derivatives) is also discussed.

For electrochemical systems such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) or solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOECs), perovskites are widely used as cathode material for the reduction of molecular oxygen. At present, strontium-substituted lanthanum manganite, La1-xSrxMnO3-δ (LSM), is used as standard SOFC cathode material for operation at high temperatures, whereas strontium-substituted lanthanum ferrite (LSF) is alternatively explored for medium-temperature SOFCs. Moreover, LSF is considered to be a potential candidate for oxygen separation membranes as the material reported interesting electrical properties. The design of new perovskite-type La transition-metal oxides is of significant technological importance in order to reduce the operating temperature to 600-800 °C and thus to reduce the SOFC system cost. For investigations on a new material class, (La1-xSrx)yFe1-z(Ni,Cu)zO3-δ was synthesized by a spray-pyrolysis process and modified on the A-site in both stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric configurations and on the B-site by substituting Fe with Ni and Cu.

The development of smart negative electrode materials with high capacitance for the uses in supercapacitors remains challenging. Although several types of electrode materials with high capacitance in energy storage have been reported, carbon-based materials are the most reliable electrodes due to their high conductivity, high power density, and excellent stability. The most common complaint about general carbon materials is that these electrode materials can hardly ever be used as free-standing electrodes. Free-standing carbon-based electrodes are in high demand and are a passionate topic of energy storage research. Electrospun nanofibers are a potential candidate to fill this gap. However, the as-spun carbon nanofibers (ECNFs) have low capacitance and low energy density on their own. To overcome the limitations of pure CNFs, increasing surface area, heteroatom doping and metal doping have been chosen. In this review, we introduce the negative electrode materials that have been developed so far. Moreover, this review focuses on the advances of electrospun nanofiber-based negative electrode materials and their limitations. We put forth a future perspective on how these limitations can be overcome to meet the demands of next-generation smart devices.

Graphene is a novel, sp2 carbon atoms bonded, two-dimensional nano-material. Due to their favorable electronic, thermal, optical, and mechanical property, graphene and its derivatives, like graphene oxide (GO) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are used in widespread applications. The outstanding potentials of these compounds in the field of nanoelectronics, composite materials, sensors, energy technology etc helped in the rapid development in their functionalization, modulatory effects on various systems of our body. GQDs has been suggested as a new nanomaterial with improved biocompatibility, biodegradability, water solubility and considerably low cytotoxic effects in in vivo models, and are applicable for altering immune responses based on quantum confinement and edge effect properties. The review particularly elucidates the mechanistic approach by which graphene and/ or its derivatives and/ or their nano-compound aid in therapeutic management against myriads of immunological perspectives. GQDs have unique physiochemical properties with carbon sheets showcases out-standing biological response against immunological interventions by altering the activities of t-cell lymphocytes. On the contrary GO plays a vital role in eliciting inflammatory signaling factors by controlling proinflammation and an anti-inflammatory response. Therefore, this review shall help the readers to have an overview of the biomedical application of graphene and its derivatives to design target specific drugs to regulate the immune response based prognosis andcure.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have attracted considerable attention due to the rapid development of the need for more safety and powerful lithium ion batteries. The prime requirements of solid polymer electrolytes are high ion conductivity, low glass transition temperature, excellent solubility to the conductive lithium salt, and good interface stability against Li anode, which makes PEO and its derivatives potential candidate polymer matrixes. This review mainly encompasses on the synthetic development of PEO-based SPEs (PSPEs), and the potential application of the resulting PSPEs for high performance, all-solid-state lithium ion batteries.

The electrochemical performance of an energy conversion and storage device like the supercapacitor mainly depends on the microstructure and morphology of the electrodes. In this paper, to improve the capacitance performance of the supercapacitor, the all-pseudocapacitive electrodes of lamella-like Bi 18 SeO 29 /BiSe as the negative electrode and flower-like Co 0.85 Se nanosheets as the positive electrode are synthesized by using a facile low-temperature one-step hydrothermal method. The microstructures and morphology of the electrode materials are carefully characterized, and the capacitance performances are also tested. The Bi 18 SeO 29 /BiSe and Co 0.85 Se have high specific capacitance (471.3 F g –1 and 255 F g –1 at 0.5 A g –1 ), high conductivity, outstanding cycling stability, as well as good rate capability. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor completely based on the pseudocapacitive electrodes exhibits outstanding cycling stability (about 93% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Moreover, the devices exhibit high energy density of 24.2 Wh kg –1 at a power density of 871.2 W kg –1 in the voltage window of 0–1.6 V with 2 M KOH solution.

The constantly growing demand for active, durable, and low-cost electrocatalysts usable in energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors or electrodes in metal-air batteries, has triggered the rapid development of heteroatom-doped carbon materials, which would, among other things, exhibit high catalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this article, a method of synthesizing nitrogen-doped graphene is proposed. Few-layered graphene sheets (FL-graphene) were prepared by electrochemical exfoliation of commercial graphite in a Na2SO4 electrolyte with added calcium carbonate as a separator of newly-exfoliated FL-graphene sheets. Exfoliated FL-graphene was impregnated with a suspension of green algae used as a nitrogen carrier. Impregnated FL-graphene was carbonized at a high temperature under the flow of nitrogen. The N-doped FL-graphene was characterized through instrumental methods: high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical performance was determined using cyclic voltamperometry and linear sweep voltamperometry to check catalytic activity in ORR. The N-doped electroexfoliated FL-graphene obeyed the four-electron transfer pathways, leading us to further test these materials as electrode components in rechargeable zinc-air batteries. The obtained results for Zn-air batteries are very important for future development of industry, because the proposed graphene electrode materials do not contain any heavy and noble metals in their composition.
