This paper examines the characteristics and potential of royal tourism as a niche tourism interest in Thailand by focusing on the case study of the royal crematorium of King Bhumibhol, a temporary structure created for the funerary event of the late king in October 2017 before being transformed into an open-air exhibition in November and December 2017. Borrowing Wang’s (1999) concept of “existential authenticity,” this paper investigates visitors’ interpretation of the site visit, to elucidate how royal culture is regarded in the context of the tourism experience. In doing so, 15 visitors were approached for a semi-structured interview. The findings revealed that the crematorium exhibition was an occasional opportunity enabling the public to gaze at the royal traditions. Royal culture retained its salience despite being transformed into a tourism offering. The crematorium exhibition was an educational medium enabling visitors to discover national art and culture in a participatory manner and stimulated their interest on studying art and culture. Moreover, by visiting the exhibition, visitors could consolidate their bond with the monarch, to be seen from their appreciation of the royal stories and their expression of gratitude toward the deceased king. To conclude, royal tourism demonstrates the ability of tourism in sustaining the country’s traditions and promoting nationalism. Tourism should not be seen as the degrader but as the protector of royal traditions. Royal tourism can be an addition to the country’s existing cultural tourism offering or used as an instrument to consolidate individuals with the national heritage. Nevertheless, the operation of royal tourism should be aware of the particularity of the country’s laws and sociocultural values. The researcher proposes that presenting the negative actions and influences of royalty that might disgrace the royal dignity should be avoided.

Museums are increasingly digitizing their collections and making them available to the public on-line. Creating such digital resources may become means for social inclusion. For museums that acknowledge migration history and cultures of ethnic minority groups as important subjects in multiethnic societies, digitization brings new possibilities for reaching source communities. This article describes Web projects conducted at Museum Maluku in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The article focuses on the museum’s experiences with cross-institutional Web projects, since digitization of the museum’s collection was initiated through collaboration with major national heritage institutions. The article also discusses how source communities through digital participation can become involved in building cultural heritage. Based on the case study of the Museum Maluku, it is argued that in order to design an appropriate mode of user participation as well as a sense of ownership it is crucial to take memory politics of source communities into account.

This study takes the NCCU Very Fun Park exhibit, collaboratively carried out by the NCCU Art and Culture Center and the Fubon Art Foundation in Taiwan, as its primary object of investigation. Using archive analysis and participant observation, this study aims to map out the cooperative strategies between two institutions in transforming the Very Fun Park into the NCCU Very Fun Park on the National Chengchi University campus. In addition, it uses audience surveys to gauge the success of this collaborative effort. The results of this study show the benefits and specific positive results of collaboration between a university art center and outside foundation. This case study can serve as a reference guide for other universities under budget restraints hoping to combine resources with an outside institution; through the concept of the “wall-less museum,” NCCU successfully transformed the Very Fun Park into its own experiential aesthetic education project for students and the public.

Abstract This paper is focused on local actors who are actively involved in the development of their villages. The area of rural development involves stakeholders of different levels and various positions. However, their roles differ, as do their positions in networks collaborating in the development of the rural community. In order to carry out this research, active citizens in member municipalities of the Dolní Morava Local Action Group (covering the territory of the South Moravian Region in the Czech Republic) were selected. Several techniques were used for their identification (analysis of local media, questionnaire survey, semi-structured interview). In this manner, it was possible to acquire a number of local actors from the public, private and non-profit sectors. Firstly, leaders in municipal development, whose position was examined by employing several approaches (positional, reputational and problem), were detected, and then social networks were analysed. The content transmitted within the networks, with an emphasis on social capital – a theme closely related to this issue – was also observed.

But not always the studies on governance focuses on the features of the organizations can influence the generated benefits. Thus, this study aims to analyze how the governance of the network may have different contributions to management in partner organizations. Methodologically, there was a single case study of a network of companies that had as main objective to structure the chain of production and use of biodiesel in the state of Sergipe (Biodiesel Sergipe Network). Data collection was performed using a semi-structured interview guide held with representatives of public and private organizations. The results showed that, in large organizations, such as a bank and a government institution, the development of new products, research groups and methodologies management was evident. However, the benefits generated by governance were more evident in a family farming cooperative that got the reorganization of the production process, administrative structure, generating new business and implementation of public policies for poverty eradication and development of the small farmer. As a theoretical contribution, it enabled the study show that, in addition to the benefits, features assigned to each institution offered distinct benefits to Network participants. In this case, future studies on governance networks should consider the profile of the participating institutions in view of the distinct benefits provided.

Keywords: Benefits.
