Bu çalışmada, bir ‘sürgün şair’ olarak anılan Özkan Mert’in Ülkesinden Ayrılan Bir İşçinin Türküsü ve Bir Mültecinin Mektubu şiirleri göstergebilimsel bir yaklaşımla yeniden okunmaya çalışılacaktır. Özellikle farklı imgesel yapıları ve farklı bir dil kullanımını içinde barındıran ve bir ‘dünyalı şair’ olarak da anılan Özkan Mert’in şiirlerini biçimsel ve içeriksel yapılarıyla ele almak, son zamanlarda çokça tartışılan ‘sürgün edebiyatı’ ile ilgili görüşlere de katkı sunacaktır. Şiirler çözümlenirken, yüzeysel yapıdan derin yapıya doğru ilerleyen tümdengelimci yöntem izlenecek ve en son aşamada şiirler anlamsal yapılarıyla karşılaştırılmaya çalışılacaktır.ENGLISH ABSTRACTThe Projection of Exile in Poetry: A Semiotics Approach to Özkan Mert’s poems titled Ülkesinden Ayrılan Bir İşçinin Türküsü and Bir Mültecinin Mektubu In the current study, it will be tried to reread the poems titled Ülkesinden Ayrılan Bir İşçinin Türküsü and Bir Mültecinin Mektubu of Özkan Mert, who is known as an exiled poet, with a semiotics approach. Considering the poems of Özkan Mert, who is known as an “poet of the world” and contains different imaginary structures and a different language usage, with their stylistic and contextual structure will also make contribution to the “exile literature” that is argued recently. During the analysis of poems, the deductive method proceeding from the superficial structure to deep structure will be practised and finally the poems will be compared about their semantic structures.Keywords: Özkan Mert; Semiotics; Exile Literature; Superficial Structure; Deep Structure

Two studies were conducted to investigate gender differences in a sample of young South African readers from poor communities. In the first study, the self-reported reading preferences of 2 775 readers on a mobile phone platform supplied by the FunDza Literacy Trust were surveyed. Both male and female readers indicated that they liked four genres in particular: romance, drama, non- fiction, and stories with specific South African content. There were nevertheless some differences, such as that a higher percentage of males liked stories involving sport. The second study examined the unique FunDza site visits made by readers, as a proxy measure of what they actually were reading. Four genres stood out: romance, drama, biography, and action/adventure. Again the similarity between male and female readers was noticeable, although many more females than males read content on the site.

The research “Echoes of Latvian Dainas in the Lyrics of Velta Sniķere” examines motifs and fragments of Latvian folk songs in the poetry by Sniķere. Several poems that directly reveal the montage of folk songs are selected as research objects. Linguistic, semantic, hermeneutical and historical as well as literary methods were used in poetry analysis. The research emphasizes the importance of Latvian folklore in the process of Latvian exile literature, the genesis of modern lyrics, and the philosophical conception of the poet. Latvian folk songs in the lyrics of Sniķere are mainly perceived as a source of ancient knowledge and as a path to the Indo-European first language, prehistoric time, which is understood only in a poetic state. Often, the montage of Latvian folk songs or their fragments in the lyrics of Sniķere is revealed as a reflexive reverence that creates a semantic fracture and opposition between profane and sacred view. The insertion of a song in the poem alters the rhythmic and phonetic sound: a free and sometimes dissonant article is replaced by a harmonic trochee, while an internationalism saturated language is replaced by a simple, phonetically effective language composed of alliterations and assonances. The montage of folk songs in a poem is justified by the necessity to restore the Latvian identity in exile, to restore the memory of ancient, mythical knowledge, to represent the understanding of beauty and other moral-ethical values and to show the thought activity. Common mythical images in the lyrics of Sniķere are snake, wind, gold, silver, stone etc. The Latvian folk song symbolism and lifestyle of the poet are organically synthesized with the insights of Indian philosophy.

Автор статьи показывает, что обучение работе с нехудожественным текстом на начальном этапе обучения в вузе состоит в анализе его риторической структуры и выявлении внутренней логики и цели повествования. The article reveals the tasks of teaching to work with text in the context of the formation of universal competencies of students. The author of the article shows that learning to work with a non-fiction text at the initial stage of training at a university consists in analyzing its rhetorical structure and identifying the internal logic and purpose of the narrative.

Newman has been much vaunted as a ‘master’ of non-fiction prose style, and justly so. His felicity of phrasing is astonishing: so precise, so elegant, so vivid. This chapter admires Newman’s stylistic achievements too, but with a view to explaining why Newman himself baulked at such praise, by insisting instead on the importance of veracity over verbalism. While a number of different writings by Newman are surveyed in the course of the chapter, the argument comes to focus in particular on his seminal work of faith, Grammar of Assent, a book that took him some twenty years to write, which almost killed him, and which best exemplifies his suggestive but enigmatic definition of ‘style’ as ‘a thinking out into language’.


What is ‘style’, and how does it relate to thought in language? It has often been treated as something merely linguistic, independent of thought, ornamental; stylishness for its own sake. Or else it has been said to subserve thought, by mimicking, delineating, or heightening ideas that are already expressed in the words. This ambitious and timely book explores a third, more radical possibility, in which style operates as a verbal mode of thinking through. Rather than figure thought as primary and pre-verbal, and language as a secondary delivery system, style is conceived here as having the capacity to clarify or generate thinking. The book’s generic focus is on non-fiction prose, and it looks across the long nineteenth century. Leading scholars survey twenty authors, to show where writers who have gained reputations as either ‘stylists’ or as ‘thinkers’ both in fact exploit the interplay between the what and the how of their prose. But the study demonstrates more than that celebrated stylists might after all have thoughts worth attending to, or that distinguished thinkers might be enriched for us if we paid more due to their style. More than reversing the conventional categories, the innovative chapters collected here show how ‘style’ and ‘thinking’ can be approached as a shared concern. At a moment when, especially in nineteenth-century studies, interest in style is re-emerging, this book revaluates some of the most influential figures of that age, re-imagining the possible alliances, interplays, and generative tensions between thinking, thinkers, style, and stylists.
