Sleep quality and its related factors in menopausal women in Da Nang, Vietnam

Background: Sleep disturbance is one of the most prevalent health problems in menopausal women. It has a number of severe consequences not only for their physicalbut also psychosocial well - being and results in lower quality of life. This study was conducted with two objectives: Describe the sleep quality and investigate its related factors among menopausal women. Methods: This is a cross - sectional descriptive study, conducted on 362 menopausal women in 13 wards of HaiChau distrist, Da Nang city from February, 2017 to September, 2018. Questionnaires included five parts: Demographics questions, perceived health status question, Zung Self - Rating Anxiety Scale, Zung Self - Rating Depression Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and correlational statistics. Results: The mean PSQI score was 8.7 ± 3.4, only 18.2% of menopausal women had good sleep quality. Sleep quality (PSQI) of menopausal women has a strong positive correlation with age (r = 0.57, p < 0.0001), anxiety (r = 0.51, p < 0.0001), depression (r = 0.51, p < 0.0001), health perception (r = 0.32, p < 0.0001), a low positive correlation with hot flashes (r = 0.17, p < 0.001) and sweating (r = 0.18, p < 0.001). Sleep quality (PSQI) was negatively correlated with educational level (r = -0.65, p < 0.0001). In the multiple regression model, age, education level, health perception and depression predicted the sleep quality of menopausal women. Conclusion: The sleep quality of menopausal women was low. There were some predictors of sleep quality: age, educational level, health perception and depression.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Coronavirus pandemic began in China in 2019 (COVID-19), causing not only public health problems but also great psychological distress, especially for physicians involved in coping with the virus or those of the risk group in social isolation, and this represents a challenge for the psychological resilience in the world population. Studies showed that health professionals had psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, stress, among others. Objectives: To investigate the quality of sleep and the prevalence rate of sleeping disorders among physicians during COVID-19 pandemic, and identify the psychological and social factors associated with the condition. Methods: A cross-sectional study of an online questionnaire was applied for physicians in Brazil. Among the 332 participants included, 227 were women. Sociodemographic assessment was used in the questionnaire, as well as the scale of impact on the events of modifications caused by COVID-19, assessment on sleep quality (PSQI), presence and severity of insomnia (ISI), depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), and anxiety (GAD-7). Results: Most physicians (65.6%) had changes in sleep. Poor sleep quality was reported by 73.1%, depressive symptoms were present in 75.8%, and anxiety in 73.4%. Conclusion: Our study found that more than 70% of the physicians assessed had impaired sleep quality, characterizing insomnia symptoms during COVID-19 outbreak. Related factors included an environment of isolation, concerns about COVID-19 outbreak and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Special interventions are needed to promote health professionals’ mental well-being and implement changes in this scenario.

Background:Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a systemic chronic inflammatory disease, which most likely occurs in young men. It mainly affects sacroiliac joints, axial skeleton, thoracic cage and seriously decreasing quality of life in AS patients[1,2]. In recent years, fatigue of AS patients has been paid more and more attention[3]. Fatigue is a complex feeling, diseased individuals describe fatigue as a sense of tiredness at rest, exhaustion with activity, lack of energy which affects daily work, inertia or lack of endurance, or as loss of vitality. It has been confirmed that fatigue is not only a symptom but may also be quantified by fatigue scores and can be modified by various measures depending on the underlying cause[4]. However, there has been no study about fatigue in AS patients in China.Objectives:This study aimed to evaluate the predictors of fatigue and the effects of fatigue on HR-QoL among patients with AS.Methods:A total of 150 AS patients were involved in the study. A series of questionnaires included: Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), the 10 cm Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI), the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) and the Fatigue Severity Scale(FSS). Independent samples t-test, Mann–Whitney U-test, Chi-square analysis, Pearson /Spearman correlation and binary logistic regression were used to analyze the data.Results:The results demonstrated that 48.7% individuals with AS suffered from fatigue. Compared with AS patients without fatigue, AS patients with fatigue showed higher WHR(P<0.05), increased BASDAI (P<0.01) and poorer BASFI (P<0.05). Meanwhile, AS patients with fatigue tended to have more severe pain(P<0.05), higher degree of anxiety(P=0.001), more serious functional disability(P=0.001) and worse sleep quality(P=0.001). Binary logistic regression indicated that WHR (OR=1.78,P<0.05), BASDAI (OR=1.34,P=0.01), sleep disturbance (OR=2.35,P<0.05) were independent predictors of fatigue in AS patients. Background: The coronavirus pandemic and the government restrictions significantly disturbed the daily functioning of people, thereby influencing healthy behaviors, such as physical activity—the core indicator of well-being. This study evaluates the associations between physical activity (PA), the level of stress and quality of sleep during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Methods: An online survey was distributed during the governmental lockdown in April 2020 and included measures for assessing physical activity, stress and sleep. The surveyed participants included all adults aged 18 years and over. The final data were collected from the 1959 respondents using: International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Findings: Almost half of the respondents indicated a low level of PA, performing only 60 min of PA daily. Most of the participants reported a moderate or high level of stress (57% and 29%, respectively) and 64% of them reported poor quality of sleep. People with low levels of stress performed on average 85.1 min/day of walking (WPA), 40.9 min/day of moderate PA (MPA) or 52.6 min/day of vigorous PA (VPA). People with good quality of sleep performed 82.9 min/day of WPA, 43.6 min/day MPA and 40.5 min/day VPA. Interpretation: The results from the study indicate that the volume of daily PA may be a predictor of the level of stress and sleep quality in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. To retain a low level of stress and good quality of sleep, a lifestyle that allows to achieve a moderate level of physical activity should be maintained. The optimal daily dose of PA is at least 70 min per day, involving different intensities.

Workaholism has been a growing issue among the labour force worldwide. However, there is no consensus between scholars about its definition yet. It might be described as “being overly concerned about work, driven by a strong and uncontrollable desire to work, and spending so much energy and effort on work that it impairs private relationships, personal hobbies/activities, and/or health”. Generally, people with specific personality traits may have an increased chance of developing workaholism. In addition, there are other factors, such as sociocultural characteristics, relationships with colleagues and significant others, and organizational culture might also play an important influence on developing workaholism. It causes many physical and psychological health problems, such as high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and family and lifestyle dissatisfaction, and a reduction in job satisfaction, presenteeism, and motivation. Putting all of this together, it is clear that workaholism has a negative influence on employees’ quality of life and overall well-being. Therefore, this study aimed at examining a variety of approaches to define “workaholism” in related literature, defining its etiology, related factors, outcomes, prevention, and treatment. The PubMed/Medline database was also used for related studies that were published in English. “Workaholism”, “obsessive–compulsive behavior”, and “quality of health” were used as keywords. It is crucial to take action to prevent people from becoming workaholics. Early diagnoses of workaholism, using predictive factors by occupational healthcare professionals in the workplace, would help decrease its impact on workers’ health, and an effective treatment of workaholism should be applied.

Abstract Study Objectives The present research examines the relationship between people’s frequent involvement in an activity they like and find important (i.e., a passion) and the quality of their sleep. Research on the dualistic model of passion has widely documented the relationship between individuals’ type of passion—harmonious versus obsessive—and the quality of their mental and physical health. However, research has yet to examine the relationship between passion and sleep quality. Building on prior research has shown that obsessive (vs harmonious) passion is related to depressive mood symptoms—an important factor associated with sleep problems—we hypothesized that obsessive passion would be associated with overall worse sleep quality, whereas harmonious passion would predict better sleep quality. Methods A sample of 1,506 Americans filled out an online questionnaire on sleep habits and passion. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Hierarchical linear regressions and mediation analyses were carried out with results confirming our hypotheses. Results Obsessive passion for an activity was associated with worse sleep quality, whereas harmonious passion was associated with better sleep quality, adjusting for demographics, the type of passionate activity and its self-reported importance, alcohol and tobacco consumption, BMI, self-reported health, and diagnosed health conditions. The relationship between both types of passion and sleep quality was mediated by depressive mood symptoms. Conclusions Our study presents evidence of a strong relationship between sleep quality and passion, opening the door for future research to create new interventions to improve people’s sleep and, consequently, their well-being.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Menopause is the termination of menstruation and fertility. Women commonly experience sleeping problems during the menopausal period. Aromatherapy is among the complementary therapies used to remedy sleeping problems. <b><i>Methods:</i></b>This study aims to investigate the effects of lavender oil on sleep and quality of life of menopausal women through steam inhalation. This study was quasi-experimental with pre-test/post-test placebo control groups. It was conducted with 57 women, 27 of whom were subject to aromatherapy and 30 to a placebo. Data were collected using the Questionnaire Form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQOL). <b><i>Results:</i></b> For the intervention group, the PSQI median scores after the administration of aromatherapy were found to be significantly lower than those before the administration (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001) and those of the placebo group (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). Similarly, for the intervention group, the total median MENQOL scores after the administration of the aromatherapy were found to be significantly lower than the scores prior to the administration (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001) as well as the scores of the placebo group (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> It was found that aromatherapy involving lavender-scented steam inhalation increased sleep quality and quality of life in women with sleep deprivation problems during menopause.

Abstract Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic disease manifested principally by motor signs and symptoms, but with frequent neuropsychological alterations. Objectives: To study the relationship between clinical and cognitive aspects and the perception of quality of life (QOL) in PD patients. Methods: Twenty consecutive patients (13 men) with idiopathic PD (mean age: 64.5y), mean disease time of 7.8 years and at stages 1-3 according to the modified Hoehn and Yahr staging scale (HYS), all outpatients from the Neurology Department of the Celso Pierro General and Maternity Hospital (PUC-Campinas), were analyzed. The following were applied: a clinical-neurological assessment, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), standard neuropsychological battery of the CERAD (Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and a QOL questionnaire (Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire - PDQ-39). Statistical analysis was carried out at a significance level of p<0.05. Results: On the PDQ-39 under the sections total, mobility and activities of daily living, and the items motor compromise (HYS) and language of the MMSE were predictors of worse QOL. Verbal fluency was a factor for emotional well-being on the PDQ-39, whereas higher scores for HAM-D and worse performance on the item attention and calculation of the MMSE were associated with worse QOL in the social support section. Total score on the MMSE and educational level were QOL factors in cognition Conclusions: The findings of the present study suggest that clinical, cognitive, motor or other depression-related factors contribute differently to the domains of QOL.

Introduction. The number of people who are considered to be either overweight or obese continues to increase, worldwide. The aim of the paper was to determine the influence of overweight on the quality of life of health workers. Material and methods. The study of prevalence was used. We observed 108 health workers both men and women from the Institute for Public Health in the City of Nis. The questionnaire Obesity Related Well-Being 97 (ORWELL97) was applied in all health workers. Results. A hundred and five health workers filled in the ORWELL97 questionnaire. There were 40% of men and 60% of women; 72% of them were married and 28% of them were single; 68% were from the urban area and 32% were from the rural area. The average age was 29.5 (SD=3.2) and the average value of BMI was 25.4 (SD=4,0). There were 54 (48.6%) health workers having normal weight and there were 51(5.4%) who were considered overweight. No one was obese among them. The difference between the average sum of scores in the group of health workers who had normal weight and the group of health workers who were overweight was not statistically significant (t=1.1 i p<0.05). Nor was the difference statistically significant for the average sum of scores of subquestion O (t=3.6 and p<0.05), and subquestion R (t=2.9 and p<0.05). BMI showed a weak positive correlation with both occurrence and relevance of symptoms. A weak positive correlation of BMI was found with average sum of scores in the first, second and third groups of questions in ORWELL 97 questionnaire. Conclusion. According to the presented results, health workers who were overweight did not have lower quality of life than health workers who had normal weight.
