This paper examines the concept of innovation management in the construction industry by studying the major components of the innovation process such as the major drivers of innovation, barriers and obstacles that prevent innovation, the enablers that motivate innovation, the practices of innovation, and the benefits of innovation both at project and company level. This paper is based on the data collected by means of structured questionnaires and analyzed throughsurvey analysis. The survey, which consisted of 46 factors involved in the innovation process, was distributed to 121 different participants, and the collected data were analyzed by the relative importance index (RII), as well as the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The RII rankings feed the AHP analysis as the first step to rank the factors. Later, the factors are ranked according to the AHP analysis. Based on these rankings, recommendations are made to contractors, consultants, project management professionals, owners and suppliers.

<p>Complexities faced by oil and gas projects due to uncertainty and risk, demand the implementation of project management techniques for their successful completion. Therefore, this is made by using analytical hierarchy process, to identify and prioritize the key factors for successful project management performance of oil and gas projects. These factors are categorized into three groups which include attributes of project staff, project planning process and assessment of project quality. Using expert choice, a hierarchy is developed followed by pairwise comparison based upon data collection from industrial experts of oil and gas sector. Results of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) concluded that, project completion within estimated time and budget, clarity of objectives and involvement of top management are most crucial elements for improvement in project management performance of oil and gas projects. Whereas sensitivity analysis being carried out according to three different scenarios highlighted factors according to their relative importance.</p>

Purpose Over the past decade, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) introduced several green regulatory guidelines, federal decrees, and a considerable number of environmentally friendly initiatives. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the top green materials and systems used currently in the UAE construction industry as per the new laws dictate as well as see if professionals are switching over to incorporate more green materials, systems, and/or designs. Design/methodology/approach The work involved reviewing internationally popular green materials and systems for construction, developing a questionnaire based on the literature review, surveying professionals in the seven UAE emirates, and ranking the findings based on the relative importance index. Findings Findings found the top used green materials and system in the UAE’s construction industry. As well as identified that there is a communication gap between the design and implementation phases that is possibly hindering the use of more green materials and systems. Originality/value This study sets a baseline to measure the UAE’s progress over the coming years in terms of integrating more green construction materials, systems, methodologies, and trends.

A Delphi study using project managers who had managed projects in excess of $500 million was used to confirm the significance and frequency of problems resulting from the nature of projects. Using the results obtained from the Delphi study a ranking of the problems experienced in these projects was obtained by calculating a Relative Importance Index. Additionally, the Delphi panel members were asked their views concerning the need for traditional project management skills (hard skills) and team management skills (soft skills) as project size increased from below $50 million to over $500 million. A substantial increase in the need for both skills was indicated with the increase in the need for soft skills being the most significant.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop criteria for project manager selection based on desired skills of a project manager and facilitate the selection of a suitable candidate from a pool of potential candidates for the implementation of projects in the Indian context.Design/methodology/approachThe study utilizes three major skills, namely human skill, conceptual and organizational skills; technical skill along with their sub-skills to develop criteria for project manager selection. Based on the responses of project professionals from industry, the study uses analytical hierarchy process to prioritize and identify the relative importance of different skills in the criteria in order to develop a hierarchical structure for project manager selection.FindingsThe study finds that at the first level of project manager selection criteria, conceptual and organizational skills are the most important selection criteria followed by human skills and technical skills. At the second level of project manager selection criteria, planning, delegating authority and understanding methods, processes, and procedures are some of the important sub-selection criteria. The weights indicating the relative importance of major selection criteria and sub-selection criteria can be used to evaluate the relative weight of a given candidate for selection as a project manager.Research limitations/implicationsThe results in this study are derived from specific demographic conditions in India. Future research with larger samples from other countries is needed for generalizations of the proposed criteria.Practical implicationsThe proposed method quantifies the intangible qualitative criteria to select a project manager, which can aid decision-makers in a multi-criteria decision-making environment.Originality/valueThis research paper is focused on the identification of critical skills for the selection of a project manager, which is almost neglected by the researchers.

Many tools and methods claim to be “innovative”. Most belong either to project management, engineering design or creativity approaches. “Innovation Management” literature usually discusses “success patterns” for Innovation based on case studies, but hardly process the comprehensive support of innovation activities. It seems that there is a strategic gap between traditional idea-realization processes that focus on reliable project management and the diffuse situation in ever faster changing environments with unclear opportunities and risks. To professionally reinforce strategic innovation activities it is necessary to define a resilient framework. This paper discusses a new view on the field of innovation that is based on the comprehensiveness of philosophy. Fundamental definitions of early philosophers on the interdependencies of the “co-evolution of the world” are applied to define an “Innovation Philosophy”. This is transformed into an “Innovation Strategy” that comprises a repeatable “Innovation Process” for guiding teams through Innovation Projects.

Proyek konstruksi rentan terhadap berbagai macam kendala, seperti kompleksitas proyek, kelangkaan sumber daya, dan ketidakpastian durasi proyek. Terdapat sebuah metode untuk penjadwalan konstruksi yang bernama Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM). Terdapat dua tantangan dalam implementasi CCPM pada penjadwalan konstruksi, salah satunya adalah pengukuran buffer. Buffer memiliki peran penting untuk memastikan keberhasilan manajemen jadwal. Metode Uncertainty-Aware Method (UAM) digunakan untuk menghasilkan buffer yang proporsional dengan memperhitungkan beragam ketidakpastian. Salah satu jenis ketidakpastian pada UAM adalah Environmental Uncertainty (EU). Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui koefisien Environmental Uncertainty dengan penyebaran kuesioner pada proyek di Jakarta. Metode Relative Importance Index (RII) digunakan untuk menganalisis data. Berdasarkan koefisien yang diperoleh dari hasil perhitungan, proyek di Jakarta mempunyai ketidakpastian Environmental Uncertainty yang besar.

This paper proposes a method for determining the bridge condition index (BCI) in concrete bridges, which is based on the views of bridge experts. First, eight indices were defined for a concrete bridge including structure, hydrology, safety, load impact, geotechnical and seismicity, strategic importance, facilities, and finally traffic and pavement. Each index consists of several sub-indices. Next, a series of questionnaires about the relative importance of indices and their sub-indices were prepared and distributed among bridge experts. Experts&rsquo; views were analyzed by Expert Choice software and the relative importance (weight) of each index and each sub-index was determined using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Then, based on experts&rsquo; views, an average score was assigned to each sub-index for any condition. Now the bridge inspectors can examine the bridge and determine the scores of sub-indices. Each index&rsquo;s score is the sum of the weighted score assigned to its&rsquo; sub-indices and BCI is the sum of weighted scores assigned to indices. Higher values of BCI indicate a better condition. Therefore, bridges with lower BCI take priority in maintenance activities. To apply the proposed method, five bridges were selected in Semnan province, Iran, and BCI calculation of these bridges were conducted.

Delays in a construction project can be regarded as a failure. This paper aims to investigate the causes of delay in Indian construction projects undertaken by private, government and nongovernmental organizations. In view of this 45 causes of delay were identified and developed the questionnaire for the quantitative confirmation of the most causes of delay. Consequently the questionnaire was distributed to construction professionals like Managers, Engineers and others. Subsequently the collected data was analyzed using statistical tool and the factors were measured and ranked under each group by importance index for various construction professionals. The results suggest that delays are mainly due to shortage of labours, shortage of construction materials and extra works (rework and change orders). The resources like manpower and materials are having highest contribution of about 24% compared to other sources. However this paper presents recommendations for a better project management techniques & procedures which can be adopted during conceptual & detailed planning phases of the project in order to minimize the construction delay.
