The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) is the pioneer in developing the technology for cage fish farming in India . Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) grows relatively fast in cages and is very much suited for carrying out small scale mariculture to meet the alternate livelihood needs of fisher-folk. Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI has developed the technology for breeding, seed production and farming of cobia in cages and organised training, and frontline/participatory demonstration programmes which have aided in creating awareness about the techno-economic viability of cage farming among the fisherfolk in Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu. A survey was taken up among a sample of 75 members of fisher self help groups (SHGs) who had adopted cage farming of cobia, inorder to assess their perception and attributes about the technology as well as the constraints faced by them. The study found that fast growth rate of cobia, shorter culture period, good farm gate price, high market demand, ease of farming near the seashore and seed availability were the important attributes which attracted the fishermen groups to take up the farming. The innovations introduced by the fishers in cage farming technology were also documented. Majority of the fishers stated, non-availability of seed during peak stocking season, high cost of pellet feed, fluctuating cost of low value fishes which are used as feed for cobia and poaching as major constraints in cage farming.

 Three trout farms from Nepal were studied to investigate the changes in physico-chemical parameters and their potential threat to natural water bodies receiving the effluents. Reference and impact sites were determined in each farm so as to find out the level of impacts due to farming activities. Some of the parameters such as dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, and total dissolve solids were significantly changed in the impacted zones compared to reference sites. Similarly, concentrations of some major ions such as calcium and sodium were increased in the impacted zones. On the other hand, some of the parameters such as pH and potassium did not change in the impacted zone although their concentrations were different among farms studied. Nevertheless, the overall changes in the physico-chemical parameters did not pose health risk to the aquatic ecosystems receiving effluents from these fish farms as the concentrations were below the prescribed levels by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as Nepal Environment Statistics. This is an indication that, although fish farming activities are degrading water qualities, there is no threat to the water quality receiving the effluents yet probably due to small scale farming. Aims: This study analyses the economic performance and gender distribution of the small-scale aquaculture of Ghana using Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Cash flow as well as gender distribution of the small-scale aquaculture of Ghana.  Study Design: This study is exploratory in its design. The study identified certain relationships and associations. Data was gathered from a sample drawn from a population.  Questionnaire-based interview was designed and administered to the small scale fish farmers in the Sunyani metropolis. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods will be employed for the study. A case study method will also be used due to the fact that it has the benefit of permitting for an intensive collection of data required to fulfil the goals of the research Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at the Sunyani Municipality in the Brong Ahafo Region of the Republic of Ghana between November 2017 and February 2018. Methodology: The study randomly selected 20 farms out 40 farms and farmers interviewed using questionnaire. A 600 m2 pond was further selected as a model of the small-scale aquaculture and used to perform the economic analysis. Results: The total start-up capital for a 600-meter square pond is estimated at $2693.15. Huge part, 56.9 percent, of the amount goes into fixed investment like pond construction, acquisition of land, and farm buildings. The economic analysis shows a viable industry with an estimated NPV of $605.4484 and IRR of 24.19 percent.    With gender, the study reveals a huge gap in man-woman distribution in the fish farming trade. Majority of the farms surveyed did not females, with the male having 77 against the female with 23%. Conclusion: The study has found a viable aquaculture industry with high profitability that can improve the livelihood of fish farming households.

Aquaculture is becoming a very important source of income to many people as well as a source of protein in their diets. This study examined the influence of the entrepreneur and enterprise characteristics on small-scale cage fish enterprises in the Asuogyaman and South Dayi Districts. The research employed a descriptive-correlation survey design, which used quantitative method to collect data from 105 owners and managers of small-scale cage fish enterprises. The findings revealed that age of entrepreneurs influenced customer satisfaction as entrepreneurs experience also influenced growth in sales. It was observed that technical know-how, attitude towards work, and managerial skills, had a significant relationship with profitability, and customer satisfaction. Finally, age of the enterprise was found to have a significant relationship with growth in sales. In conclusion, all the variables had positive relationships with enterprise success, but not all the relationships were significant. It is recommended that cage fish farmers should be encouraged to invest more in technical education, which will help improve on the success of their enterprises. Furthermore, farmers should take precautions to reduce the risk of failure to increase their chances of success and survival.

Ornamental fish is a fish that has a distinctive shape, color and character so as to create an aquarium atmosphere that supports spatial layout and is able to provide a peaceful atmosphere. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of ornamental fish business and analyze the feasibility of ornamental fish business in Jambi City. The qualitative method is used to describe descriptively the general description of the location of the study and the characteristics of ornamental fish farmers, while the quantitative method uses the Analysis of Income and Revenue of ornamental fish business, cost analysis, income analysis and cost balance (R/C Ratio), Net Benefits - Cost Ratios (Net B/C), and institutionally descriptive for the betta fish, guppy and botia ornamental fish business. Overall, the general description of ornamental fish farming business in Jambi City is conducted conventionally. The average R/C ratio of the Betta ornamental fish business is 2.60, guppy is 2.02 and botia is 1.22. The highest average NPV in the betta ornamental fish in the mid-scale farming business is Rp. 60,745,160.71, guppy on a large scale is Rp. 31,385,065.48, and botia on a large scale with a value of Rp. 78,034,144.35. Overall, this ornamental fish business has an NPV value of> 0. The ornamental fish business in Jambi City is feasible to run and develop, betta ornamental fish business on a small scale with an average B/C Ratio of 1.15 and medium with an average value of average 1.60, guppy on a small scale with an average value of 1.02, and botia on a medium scale with an average value of 1.00 and large with a value of an average of 1.22. Bacterial pathogens are a major cause of infectious diseases in aquatic animals. The abuse of antibiotics in the aquatic industry has led to the proliferation of antibiotic resistance. It is therefore essential to develop more effective and safer strategies to increase the efficacy and extend the life span of the antibiotics used in aquaculture. In this study, we show that six aquaculture bacterial pathogens (i.e., Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio alginolyticus, Edwardsiella tarda, Streptococcus iniae, Vibrio harveyi, and Vibrio fluvialis) in the stationary phase can be rapidly killed after immersion in gentamicin- or neomycin-containing, ion-free solutions for a few minutes. Such hypoionic shock treatment enhances the bacterial uptake of gentamicin in an ATP-dependent manner. Importantly, we demonstrate, as a proof of concept, that gentamicin under hypoionic shock conditions can effectively kill A. hydrophila in vivo in a skin infection model of zebrafish (Danio rerio), completely curing the infected fish. Given that pathogenic bacteria generally adhere to the skin surface and gills of aquatic animals, our strategy is of potential significance for bacterial infection control, especially for small-scale economic fish farming and ornamental fish farming. Further, the combined treatment can be completed within 5 min with a relatively small volume of solution, thus minimizing the amount of residual antibiotics in both animals and the environment.
