The bushfrog genus Gracixalus Delorme, Dubois, Grosjean & Ohler, 2005 is found in southern and south-western China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. It is presently comprised of 17 species. In Thailand, only two species have been recorded, namely G. carinensis (Boulenger) and G. seesom (Massui, Khonsue, Panha & Eto). The latter of these two species is currently known to be endemic to the country. Based on recent field work conducted in 2019 in Doi Phu Kha National Park, Nan Province of northern Thailand, we are reporting two new records of the genus Gracixalus, G. quangi and G. yunnanensis, from Thailand, based on morphological and molecular evidence. In addition, this is the first study to report on the identification of a female specimen of G. yunnanensis. Furthermore, morphological data and natural history notes of the aforementioned species in Thailand have been provided, along with updated locations for the distribution of both species.

Three new species of the nursery-web spider genus Architis Simon, 1898 are described and illustrated; all collected during spider biodiversity inventories in the Brazilian Amazonia. Architis gracilis Santos sp. nov. is based on a male and A. catuaba Santos sp. nov. on a female specimen, both from the state of Acre, western Brazilian Amazonia. Architis neblina Santos & Nogueira sp. nov. is described from eight females from the Pico da Neblina National Park, state of Amazonas. New records from Brazil are listed for Architis brasiliensis (Mello-Leitão, 1940), A. helveola (Simon, 1898), A. maturaca Santos, 2007 and A. tenuipes (Simon, 1898). The presence of cuspule-like spines on male coxae I, once known only for Architis tenuis Simon, 1898 and A. cymatilis Simon, 1898, are reported for A. maturaca. A remarkable dimorphism in the epigynum of Architis capricorna Carico, 1981 is described based on specimens from southern Brazil. An updated identification key for species of Architis is provided.

We herein report three new provincial records of the family Rhacophoridae from northeastern Vietnam: Rhacophorus orlovi from Ha Giang province, and Theloderma rhododiscus and Zhangixalus puerensis from Cao Bang province. Additional morphological data and natural history of the aforementioned species are also provided based on newly collected specimens.

Atelognathus patagonicus is one of the eight species included in the Patagonian genus Atelognathus, an endemic frog occurring in the system of endorheic basaltic lagoons of the Laguna Blanca National Park (PNLB), Neuquén, Argentina. Based on morphological data, Cei & Roig (1968) described two forms of A. patagonicus, which they called “aquatic” and “littoral”. These morphotypes were first suggested to belong to different species, but later, Cei (1972) proposed that both forms represent a balanced polymorphism within A. patagonicus. More recently, an ecomorphological study showed that aquatic and littoral are reversible forms of the same individual (phenotypic plasticity). In this paper we compare the morphotypes of A. patagonicus using nucleotide sequences of the mtDNA (cytochrome b and control region) in order to test the existence of genetic differentiation between the aquatic and littoral forms. In addition, we present data of genetic variability of A. patagonicus from the Laguna Blanca system. We did not detect genetic differentiation between littoral and aquatic morphotypes for both genes studied. This observation is consistent with the hypothesis of phenotypic plasticity. In contrast with the expected results for low vagility organisms, the diversity index observed in A. patagonicus revealed a low genetic variability.

Abstract. Mildawati, Sobir, Sulistijorini, Chikmawati T. 2020. The diversity of pteridophytes in Siberut National Park, Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3200-3208. The diversity of Pteridophytes in the Siberut National Park (Siberut NP) Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, is still very well preserved, but the information is limited. This research aimed to study the divesrity of Pteridophyte species in the Siberut NP in order to provide its taxonomic information using morphological data. The study consisted of exploration to collect plant specimens directly in the field, observation and identification of herbarium specimens in Herbarium Bogoriense and verification using online websites from various sources. A total of 69 species of Pteridophytes classified into 36 genera, and 20 families were recorded in the Siberut NP with Polypodiaceae has the most species diversity with 12 species of 6 genera. As many as 14 species are new records for Siberut Island, i.e. Selaginella involvens (Sw.) Spring (Selaginellaceae), Asplenium simile Blume (Aspleniaceae), Diplazium montanum V.A.V.R (Athyriaceae), Stenochlaena palustris (Burm) Bedd. (Gleichnaceae), Davallia solida (Forst.) Sw. (Davalliaceae), Callistopteris apiifolia (C.Presl) Copel., Crepidomanes humile Bosch (Hymenophyllaceae), Lindsaea carvifolia Kramer, Lindsaea doryphora Kramer, Lindsaea napaea Aldrew. (Lindsaeaceae), Nephrolepis biserrata (Sw.) Schott (Nephrolepidaceae), Ceratopteris thalictroides (L.) Brongn., Haplopteris ensiformis (Sw.) E.H.Crane and Syngramma alismifolia (Pr.) J.Sm. (Pteridaceae). The habitats of Pteridophytes found were mostly terrestrial and epiphytic (34 species each), while aquatic habitat was only found to one species. The results of this study will serve as baseline information of the plant diversity in the Siberut NP that can be used as the reference for future studies on Pteridophytes and to develop their conservation strategy in the region.

The inventory of the bryophytes collected during the annual excursion of the Working Group for Bryology of the Italian Botanical Society is reported. This excursion was held in 2018 on the northern slope of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park, in the Administrative Region of Emilia-Romagna. The field work led to the finding of 113 taxa (24 liverworts and 89 mosses), including eight new records and seven confirmations for this Region. The occurrence of rare taxa for Italy (Scapania uliginosa, Rhizomnium pseudopunctatum, Racomitrium fasciculare, Scorpidium cossonii, Grimmia lisae, Orthotrichum pulchellum) is highlighted.

The family Megophryidae is one of the most poorly known groups of amphibians in Son La Province, Vietnam. In the herpetofaunal list of Vietnam in 2009 only two species of megophryids were recorded from this province and recent studies have documented five additional species of Megophryidae from Son La Province. Based on recent field work in northern Vietnam, we report six new provincial records of the family Megophryidae from Son La Province, namely Leptobrachium ailaonicum, Leptobrachella sungi, Megophrys feae, M. jingdongensis, M. microstoma and M. parva. In addition, morphological data were provided for each species, based on newly collected specimens. Our findings bring the species number of the family Megophryidae to 13 in Son La Province.

We record two species of amphibians for the first time from Vietnam: Bufo luchunnicus from Lao Cai and Son La provinces and Amolops wenshanensis from Quang Ninh Province. Morphologically, the Vietnamese representatives of B. luchunnicus resemble the type series from China. The specimen of A. wenshanensis from Vietnam slightly differs from the type series from China by having a smaller size (SVL 33.2 mm vs. 35.7 – 39.9 mm in males) and the presence of distinct transverse bands on the dorsal surfaces of limbs. Genetic divergence between the sequence of the Vietnamese specimen and those of A. wenshanensis from China available from GenBank is 1.2 – 1.6% (ND2 gene). In addition, morphological data and natural history notes of aforementioned species are provided from Vietnam.

The tropical seasonal rainy evergreen broad-leaved forest vegetation of the Cucphoung National Park has been classified and the distribution of plant communities has been shown on the map using the relations of vegetation to geology, geomorphology and pedology. The method of vegetation mapping includes: 1) the identifying of vegetation types in the remote-sensed materials (aerial photographs and satellite images); 2) field work to compile the interpretation keys and to characterize all the communities of a study area; 3) compilation of the final vegetation map using the combined information. In the classification presented a number of different level vegetation units have been identified: formation classes (3), formation sub-classes (3), formation groups (3), formations (4), subformations (10) and communities (19). Communities have been taken as mapping units. So in the vegetation map of the National Park 19 vegetation categories has been shown altogether, among them 13 are natural primary communities, and 6 are the secondary, anthropogenic ones. The secondary succession goes through 3 main stages: grassland herbaceous xerophytic vegetation, xerophytic scrub, dense forest.

The present communication describes the morpho-taxonomy of ten chlorophycean algae from Maipokhari lake, Ilam. They belong to eight genera viz. Scenedesmus (1), Cylindrocapsa (1), Netrium (2), Closterium (2), Euastrum (1), Cosmarium (1), Staurodesmus (1), and Staurastrum (1) under four families viz. Scenedesmaceae (1), Cylindrocapsaceae (1), Mesotaeniaceae (2), and Desmidiaceae (6).
