Sacred natural sites, as probably the oldest form of habitat reserve for religious or cultural causes worldwide, are suggested to have an important role in conserving vegetation; however, there are insufficient data supporting the detailed implications of such sites for vegetation conservation. Thus, we evaluated the effectiveness of vegetation conservation on a Tibetan sacred mountain in Yajiang County, Sichuan, China, by investigating species richness and the structural attributes of higher vascular plant communities on and around the sacred mountain from April to June 2009. The results showed that the number of tree species on the sacred mountain was significantly higher than that in the surrounding area, but there were no notable differences in the numbers of shrub and grass species between the two sites. The sacred mountain harbored a greater number of small, short trees compared with the surrounding area, wherein the low-shrub and grass understory was relatively dense. We conclude that the sacred mountain has a positive impact on indigenous vegetation protection, but disparities in the management of the allowed uses of such sites could reduce their conservation effectiveness.

Previous research highlights the positive influence that experiences in nature have on children’s physical, emotional and conceptual development. There is also evidence that indicates that the availability of green areas on school grounds is associated with pupils’ better academic performance as well as with their comprehension of wildlife. This study examines the drawings that 152 children completed with the objective of expressing their understanding of the plant world. Approximately half of the drawings were depicted by children that attend a school with green areas within the school site as well as in the surrounding area. The remaining half of the sample includes the illustrations that children attending an educational centre with, virtually, no green areas within the school premises or in the immediate vicinity. Notwithstanding the fact that the two schools involved in the study belong to a similar social context and they are relatively close to each other, the results show relevant differences between the drawings by the two groups compared, in terms of the pictorial content and the utilisation of colour. The results are discussed in light of the growing number of studies that emphasise the positive impact that close contact with nature has on children’s everyday life at school.

Indonesia is an archipelago country with a sea larger than the mainland, so it is undeniable that in Indonesia there are many fisherman settlements. Often fishermen settlements in Indonesia are marginalized in the development of maritime and service industries and even become victims of the activities of the utilization of coastal areas by the private sector engaged in tourism, industry, and services. The fisherman settlement community is not getting a positive impact from the development, therefore this study aims so that the fisherman settlement community can get a positive impact from the development of the surrounding area. This research takes a case study in the fisherman settlements of Kingking and Karangsari in Tuban Regency, East Java. The approach used in this research is the urban assemblage approach to reveal socio-cultural knits as a cultural force that shapes the sustainability of the place. The urban assemblage approach will be supported by search methods which will then be analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The search was carried out through literature review and field surveys. This research presents the results in the form of a mapping of knits between culture, social, the economy as the cultural strength of the Kingking and Karangsari fisherman settlements with the surrounding tourist areas. The results of this study can be considered by the government and local communities in planning the development of coastal areas or fisherman settlements into tourist destinations.

Рresented the results of floroecological, hydrobotanical and geobotanical researches of the Regional Landscape Park "Samara Plavni". Regional Landscape Park (RLP) "Samara Plavni" is located in the waters of the Samara Bay, which was formed as a result of flooding of the floodplain of the Samara River during the creation of the Zaporozhye (Dnieper) Reservoir and the surrounding area. Conducted a systematic and bioecological analysis of the flora of vascular plants. Studied the composition of the rare fraction of flora and associated flora element. The research was carried out according to the generally accepted methods of floristic, geobotanical and hydrobotanical research. Bioecomorphic characteristics of species (selection of ecomorphs) are compiled according by A. L. Belgard ecomorph system using the following ecomorphs: biomorphs (one-, two-, perennials); heliomorphs (relation to light); hygromorphs (relation to the aquatic environment); tropomorphs (relation to nutrition); cenomorphs (growth in certain phytocenoses). Ecological characteristics of species were given from literature sources and according to the results of many years of own research. The analysis of the adventitious fraction was carried out at the time of drift – archaeophytes, neophytes. Advent status was determined on the basis of literature data. Vegetation of the regional landscape park "Samara Plavni" is represented by natural and semi-natural groups. The main area of shallow water is occupied by massifs of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud and groups of submerged vegetation. The tree and shrub vegetation of the park is represented by natural forest complexes, semi-natural groups and artificial plantations. Meadow and meadow-swamp vegetation of the landscape park is represented by complexes of associations of mesophytes and hygrophytes. The floristic list of vascular plant flora is 617 species. Hemicryptophytes, perennials, sciogeliophytes and heliophytes, mesotrophs, mesophytes, hygrophytes predominate here. Among cenomorphs, most species are represented by meadow (139) and forest (108) species. The rare fraction of flora is 73 species. There are 128 species of ruderal flora and 140 species of adventive flora, including 6 invasive species. At the time of entry into the study area allochthonous element of flora is divided into two groups: archaeophytes – 63 species (45%) and neophytes – 77 species (55%).

The species richness (number of vascular-plant species per unit area) of sclerophyll (heathy) plant communities is examined from south-east Queensland to south-west Western Australia. The species richness of communities of heathy open forest, heathy open scrub, dry heathland and wet heathland is consist- ently similar throughout southern Australia and decreases from dry heathland (on laterite, coastal and inland localities) to heathy open forest, heathy open scrub and wet heathland. Investigation of related microcommunities at Cooloola, Stradbroke Island, Ku-ring-gai Chase and Wilsons Promontory indicates that species richness decreases linearly as overstorey cover increases. In post-fire succession on Stradbroke Island heathy woodland and Dark Island heathland, species richness declines linearly as overstorey cover increases during the regeneration of the community. The appli- cation of limiting fertiliser to Stradbroke Island heathy woodland and Dark Island heathland increases the rate of development of overstorey cover, with a simultaneous decrease in species richness. Species richness of the understorey strata of plant communities appears to be inversely related to the rate of development of foliage projective cover in the overstorey. If an environmental or biotic factor inhibits or retards the development of overstorey cover, the understorey increases in species richness. Conversely, if any environmental or biotic factor accelerates the development of overstorey cover, the understorey species show a reduction in species richness.

AbstractAminopyralid efficacy on Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) and potential to injure native species was evaluated in a restored prairie at the Glacial Ridge Preserve managed by The Nature Conservancy in Polk County, MN. Canada thistle stem density was reduced from 17 to 0.1 stems m−2 10 mo after treatment (MAT) with aminopyralid applied in the fall at 120 g ha−1. Aminopyralid also altered the composition of both Canada thistle–infested and native plant communities. Aminopyralid controlled Canada thistle and removed or reduced several undesirable forb species from the restored prairie communities, such as absinth wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) and perennial sowthistle (Sonchus arvensis). A number of high seral forbs were also reduced or removed by aminopyralid, including maximilian sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani) and purple prairie clover (Dalea purpurea). Foliar cover of high seral forbs in the native plant community was reduced from 12.2 to 7% 22 MAT. The cover of high seral grass species, such as big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) and Indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans) increased after aminopyralid application in both the Canada thistle–infested and native plant communities and averaged 41.4% cover compared with only 19.4% before removal of Canada thistle. Species richness, evenness, and diversity were reduced after aminopyralid application in both Canada thistle–infested and native plant communities. However, the benefits of Canada thistle control, removal of undesirable species, and the increase in native grass cover should lead to an overall improvement in the long-term stability and composition of the restored prairie plant community, which likely outweigh the short-term effects of a Canada thistle control program.


J. E. Smith . Dr Longton’s slides of orange patches of Xanthoria lichens on Antarctic cliffs were reminiscent of coastal cliffs in temperate regions. Is this lichen community essentially maritime in the Antarctic? R. E. Longton. The Caloplaca-Xanthoria community certainly resembles the associations of orange crustose lichens of coastal cliffs in temperate regions. It is particularly well developed on coastal cliffs in many places in the Antarctic, but smaller areas occur inland, for example in the Tottanfjella, some 300 km from the sea. There are other parallels between growth form, and indeed in the genera represented, in the cryptogamic vegetation of Antarctic and temperate regions, an example being the associations of lichens and cushion mosses on montane rocks. M. W. Holdgate. To what extent does South Georgia vegetation resemble that of the Maritime Antarctic in the composition and distribution of its cryptogamic communities? To what degree could one describe the plant communities of the former as corresponding to those of the latter, but with the superimposition of a vascular plant element?
