SummarySix anabolic steroids were assessed for their ability to enhance plasma fibrinolytic activity in males with ischaemic heart disease. Five 17α-alkylated steroids (Ethyloestrenol, Norethandrolone, Methandienone, Methylandrostenediol and Oxymetholone) were examined and all produced a significant increase in plasma plasminogen activator as measured by the euglobulin lysis time. The only non-17α-alkylated steroid studied (Methenolone acetate) failed to enhance fibrinolysis. The 17α-alkylated steroids studied all deserve more detailed evaluation of their long term effects on plasma fibrinolytic activity.

Objective: To detection of microdeletions of Y chromosome and study the frequency of microdeletions in infertile men with non-obstructive azoospermia or severe oligozoospermia(Middle Euphrates center)in Iraq population. Material and methods: 153 males were included in the study, the casesweredivided into groups according to the infertility etiology and semen analysis according to Word health organization, the frequencies and the characteristicsof Y chromosome microdeletions were investigated in groups. Multiplex PCR was applied to detect the microdeletions. Results:Y chromosome microdeletion was detected in 42 (40.7%) of 153 cases ,Microdeletions in azoospermia showed more frequently detected 28 (52.8%), followed by severe oligospermia 14 (28 %),Microdeletions in the AZFc region were the most common 12 (22.64%), followed by AZFb 11(20.75%) and AZFa 5(9.43%) in azoospermia compared to severe oligospermisAZFc 6 (12%) AZFb 4 (8 %) and AZFa 4 (8%). Conclusion: Y chromosome microdeletions were detected quite frequently in certain infertility subgroups. Therefore, detailed evaluation of an infertile man by physical examination, semen analysis, hormonal evaluationsand when required, karyotype analysis may predict the patients for whom Y chromosome microdeletionanalysis is necessary and also prevent cost increases. Recommendation: This study emphasizes that analysis of microdeletions should be carried out for all patients with idiopathic azoospermia and severe oligospermia who are candidates for intracytoplasmic sperm injection

Abstract A clinical need exists for a sensitive and specific assay for the quantitation of the bone isoform of alkaline phosphatase in serum. The majority of methods do not meet this requirement; however, the recent development of immunoassays for this isoform may provide a solution. In a detailed evaluation of two immunoassays, we found a degree of imprecision that enables the discrimination of changes within the reference range. The cross-reactivity of the liver isoform was found to be between 7.1% and 12.7% when two different methods of assessment were used. The comparison of results with an electrophoretic procedure showed that the immunocapture method recovered less of the bone isoform in samples from children than in samples from patients with Paget disease; no such difference was found with the immunometric method. This suggests that the immunocapture antibody may discriminate between different bone isoforms in children whereas the immunometric assay does not.

Vaccines are needed to protect from SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19. Vaccines that induce large quantities of high affinity virus-neutralizing antibodies may optimally prevent infection and avoid unfavorable effects. Vaccination trials require precise clinical management, complemented with detailed evaluation of safety and immune responses. Here, we review the pros and cons of available vaccine platforms and options to accelerate vaccine development towards the safe immunization of the world’s population against SARS-CoV-2. Favorable vaccines, used in well-designed vaccination strategies, may be critical for limiting harm and promoting trust and a long-term return to normal public life and economy.

Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a dynamic wireless communication network. Because of the dynamic and infrastructureless characteristics, MANET is vulnerable in reliability. This paper presents a novel reliability analysis for MANET. The node mobility effect and the node reliability based on a real MANET platform are modeled and analyzed. An effective Monte Carlo method for reliability analysis is proposed. A detailed evaluation is performed in terms of the experiment results.

Many government departments have hundreds of buildings located in active seismic regions. Most of these buildings were built decades ago according to old design codes, and could be vulnerable to strong or even moderate earthquakes. To evaluate the seismic performance of concrete moment frames or moment frames with shear walls in these buildings, the static, vibration and modal response spectrum analyses are carried out according to the 2005 National building code of Canda NBCC. The analysis uses 2-D finite element models consisting of frame elements and inplane elements. The frame element has a built-in rigid linear segment at each end for modeling the portion within the beam–column joint, whereas the inplane element may have openings for modeling doors and windows in shear walls. The stiffness of both elements is adjusted to include effects of shear deformation in beams and bending deformation in wall piers. The results are further adjusted to incorporate effects of torsion and accidental torsion. Then, CSA-A23.3-04 is followed for detailed evaluation on safety in limit states, “strong column – weak beam” concept and shear strength requirements. Based on this approach, a new computer program is developed to perform this evaluation with minimum input data. Important issues in each step are discussed in detail. Examples are presented, and results are compared with available existing data.

Background. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) represents a popular therapeutic option for patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Unfortunately, there is a paucity of data regarding the efficacy of CAM in ASD. The aim of the present systematic review is to investigate trials of CAM in ASD.Material and Methods. We searched the following databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, CINAHL, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, Agricola, and Food Science Source.Results. Our literature search identified 2687 clinical publications. After the title/abstract screening, 139 publications were obtained for detailed evaluation. After detailed evaluation 67 studies were included, from hand search of references we retrieved 13 additional studies for a total of 80.Conclusion. There is no conclusive evidence supporting the efficacy of CAM therapies in ASD. Promising results are reported for music therapy, sensory integration therapy, acupuncture, and massage.
