Abstract This paper covers the analysis of operation drafting devices of the spinning machines, the technological requirements for the processes of product straightening, product drafting, straightening and parallelization of fibers and the basic theoretical prerequisites. The main geometrical parameters of design of drafting pairs, their interaction, influencing factors as the process of yarn formation after drafting, with the use of straps, are considered. Analysis of the operation of the existing design of drafting devices of technological machines of spinning production has the following disadvantages: low reliability and service life of rubber straps, insufficient strength characteristics and elastic-mechanical properties of the frame element made of technical cotton fabrics. It is necessary to select a pair of straps that meets all the requirements of conditional operation of a pair of straps as a frame element for the upper and lower straps made of thin-layer metal fabric made of metal thread, make adjustments to additional calculations of the design parameters of the drafting devices, taking into account the straps made with a thin metal fabric base.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present the results of an experimental campaign conducted on a recently developed fire protection system (FPS), specifically designed for installation on continuous glass curtain walls systems typical of multi-story buildings.Design/methodology/approachThe authors will first present the theoretical derivation of the relevant parameters to characterize and predict the fire evolution and probability of flashover, according to existing codes and standards. Then, the results of two full-scale tests will be presented in terms of temperature fields, thermal gradients and position of the neutral plane.FindingsThe experimental evidence shows how the proposed system is able to dramatically reduce internal temperatures in the rooms interested by the fire, also allowing for safer evacuation procedures by increasing the height of the neutral plane.Originality/valueThe novel window frame element comprises an automatic doubly convergent aperture system that induces ventilation in the compartment by increasing internal convection in the rooms subject to the fire. This allows for an efficient dispersion of hot gases and fumes and a drastic improvement in safety for both the occupants and firefighting operators. The theoretical results are then compared to the experimental evidence to evaluate the performance of the proposed ventilation system in the context of existing standards and design procedures.

Abstract An advantage bidirectional sloped rolling type isolation device composed of multiple rollers in both orthogonal-in-plane directions is studied in this research. The analytical model of a single direction of roller bearing (RB) system is extended to a two-direction RB system. Also, a 3D linear-elastic frame element to build the finite element model is used to incorporate the response of the building model. Several experimental tests of a physical building model with and without an RB system are used to validate the numerical model. The model is used to assess the nonlinear response history analysis of a four-story multi-column building system with two different physical properties that represent buildings with low and high lateral stiffness when subjected to pairs of scaled near-fault earthquake records. The effect of the angle of inclination of bearing plates in the range of 1.0o to 4.0o and sliding friction force is also investigated in a parametric analysis to evaluate the performance of RB with supplementary damping mechanisms ranging from 0.0 to 0.5N/kg, i.e., friction force normalized with the structure mass. Results show that the proposed bi-directional RB system is suitable for reducing the seismic response of rigid and flexible multi-column structures. In particular, the RB system reduces structure acceleration responses by 5–85% in the flexible structure and 86–96% in the rigid structure. Furthermore, an angle of inclination of bearing plates greater than or equal to 3.0o is an advantage to ensure the self-centering capacity.

Vibration can cause structural damage in dynamic systems when not designed properly. Recently, several approaches are emerging in structural dynamics as possible alternatives for passive vibration and noise control, such as phononic crystals and metamaterials. In this work, a three-dimensional frame that presents intersection of longitudinal, flexural and torsional band gaps is investigated. For periodic structures, the Irreducible Brillion Zone (IBZ) gives information for any possible angle of propagation of a wave. The manufacturing process induces variability along each three-dimensional frame element. The present study verifies the robustness of the band gaps of the three-dimensional structure against spatially varying geometry and mechanical properties. The spatial random fields are modeled using the expansion optimal linear estimator (EOLE). Bayesian statistics is used to infer on the stochastic response simulated using the Monte Carlo method combined with the EOLE. The three-dimensional frame is modeled via Euler-Bernoulli beam and ordinary shaft theories as well as with Timoshenko and Saint-Venant theories. It is shown that the three-dimensional frame structure exhibits a complete (for all waves) and full (throughout the IBZ) robust band gap against the proposed variability. Both models are able to predict this robust band gap.

Abstract This paper presents a frame-based constructional approach to argument structure satisfaction via unselected adjuncts, by focusing on one such case in Japanese. It points out an intriguing constructional phenomenon whereby causal adjunct clauses marked with node ‘because’, as used with main-clause predicates that evoke communication frames (such as Telling and Warning), serve to satisfy main-clause argument structure. The node clause precedes the main-clause speech act of telling/warning, and can be interpreted as a speech-act causal (Sweetser 1990). The node clause at the same time conveys the content of informing or warning, i.e., the core Frame Element message, which is absent as a main-clause complement. This analysis of argument structure satisfaction via unselected adjuncts provides evidence for a Frame Semantic approach to argument structure that incorporates Construction Grammar.

In order to identify interpretative patterns in the media coverage of technology, researches apply the variable risk and benefit framing. Risk and Benefit Framing is being measured differently; some studies use one variable, other studies use several variables to measure it. Either way, the variable is used to investigate to what extent either risks or benefits dominate the discourse and thus whether a positive or negative impression of a technology is given. In addition, it is analyzed how benefits and risks are portrayed, for example with regards to specificity and magnitude (Strekalova 2015) or how the ratio of risks and benefits changes over time or differs among different media (Donk, Metag, Kohring, & Marcinkowski 2012).   Field of application/theoretical foundation: The variable risk and benefit framing is often based on Entman’s framing approach, which is frequently applied in quantitative content analyses on various topics. In media content analyses, the framing concept, however, is understood and applied differently, which is the case also for the analysis of technology coverage. In addition to risk and benefit frames, thematic or issue frames are applied including risks and/or benefits as possible frames among others (e.g. Weaver et al. 2009). Yet, some analyses are based on the assumption that a frame is a specific, unique pattern of a text composed of several elements (Kohring & Matthes 2002; Matthes & Kohring 2008). These elements are (a) problem definition, (b) causal attribution of responsibility, (c) moral judgment of the protagonists and their actions, and (d) treatment recommendations (Entman 1993, p. 52). Following this inductive approach, these elements are coded as single variables. The title is considered as a text category of a synthetic character, a result of author’s analytical reasoning and his way of compressing information. As a frame element it is characterized by features of effectiveness and procedurality and gains a specific inference, combining initial and excretory knowledge, explicit and implicit information, text and subtext. The aim of the article is to identify how the semantics of the title are expanding as the poetic text is being developed and numerous and diverse prospective and retrospective links of its elements are formed. The analysis of the poetical text explicated its metaphysical and ontological nature. The information in the text is gradually introduced via an ambivalent method with a combination of demonstration and implication. A totality of information transmission, formed by principles of exaggeration, antithesis, parallelism and veiling was identified. A list of various stylistic methods enhancing the title, explicating its’ cognitive characteristics and executing a constructive function was revealed. Additional meanings of the words ‘persistence’, ‘activity’, ‘power’, ‘optimism’, ‘vulnerability’, ‘communicativity’, ‘compassion’, ‘faith’, ‘assertivity’, that are being brought into the title as the text goes, including a connection with the concepts «Autumn» / «Spring», «Faith», which justified its’ metaphorization and symbolization, were discovered. All this determined the metaphorisation and symbolisation of the title and allowed the poem to be referred to as metaphysical lyrics.

The special-shaped column structure system has more advantages than the rectangular column system in terms of architectural design and actual use. As a relatively new structural form, the concrete special-shaped column structure has not accumulated enough engineering practical experience. In this study, the rotation-moment curve of the plastic hinge of special-shaped column frame element was defined, the coupled PMM hinge applied to the frame element was studied, and the yield surface of the hinge was drawn. On this basis, an elastoplastic pushover analysis was conducted on a 12-storey special-shaped column frame model, its failure under different earthquakes was simulated, and its seismic performance was studied. The work of this article can provide reference for the engineering application of special-shaped column frame structure.

This study analyzes securitized discourses and counter narratives that surround the COVID-19 pandemic. Controversial cases of security related political communication, salient media enunciations, and social media reframing are explored through the theoretical lenses of securitization and cascading activation of framing in the contexts of Slovakia, Russia, and the United States. The first research question explores whether and how the frame element of moral evaluation factors into the conversations on the securitization of the pandemic. The analysis tracks the framing process through elite, media, and public levels of communication. The second research question focused on fairly controversial actors— “rogue actors” —such as individuals linked to far-leaning political factions or militias. The proliferation of digital media provides various actors with opportunities to join publicly visible conversations. The analysis demonstrates that the widely differing national contexts offer different trends and degrees in securitization of the pandemic during spring and summer of 2020. The studied rogue actors usually have something to say about the pandemic, and frequently make some reframing attempts based on idiosyncratic evaluations of how normatively appropriate is their government's “war” on COVID-19. In Slovakia, the rogue elite actors at first failed to have an impact but eventually managed to partially contest the dominant frame. Powerful Russian media influencers enjoy some conspiracy theories but prudently avoid direct challenges to the government's frame, and so far only marginal rogue actors openly advance dissenting frames. The polarized political and media environment in the US has shown to create a particularly fertile ground for rogue grassroots movements that utilize online platforms and social media, at times going as far as encouragement of violent acts to oppose the government and its pandemic response policy.
