Blood cell separation microdevices are designed in biomedical engineering for the separation of particular cells from blood, such as cancer cells. The movement of blood microparticles, specially these cancer cells, in a continuous flow microfluidic device is controlled by several forces, as a result, understanding and guiding the movement of these microparticles is a challenging problem. These cells are subject to different types of forces that result from natural or external effects. These forces include gravity, and virtual mass, buoyancy, dielectrophoresis and, inertia force. Therefore, all of these are to be accounted for in any design or implementation of a system. This paper we use formal analysis of a separation microdevice in order to model and verify the the microparticle movement and behavior at high level of abstraction while considering different types of forces. The the dynamic behavior of the particle can be modeled as a Markovian decision process in order to predict the trajectory of microparticles. This model can be used to provide probabilistic analysis for the particle movement in the microdevice under the effect of different types of forces.

Separation of rare cells such as circulating cancer and fetal cells from blood has potential importance in disease monitoring and prevention. In this paper, we report a new method of cancer cells separation from patient blood by inertial focusing technique. A design and simulation of ascending and descending curvilinear microchannels for separation of particles resembling cancer cells have been presented. In simulation, polystyrene particles have been used which represent the size of red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC) and cancer cells. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) design and simulation of ascending and descending microchannels is used for cell separation. The simulation was carried out in two stages including focusing and separation. The ascending curvilinear channel design demonstrated favorable focusing and separation. Separation with 100% purity and efficiency of the unwanted particle was achieved at Reynolds number (Re) = 8.50 and velocity 0.105 m/s. In case of descending curvilinear channel, cell separation was not good. Considering cancer cells size about 15 μm, our proposed ascending microchannel is a good candidate for cancer cells separation from blood.

The issues of using of information and measurement systems based on processing of digital images of microscopic preparations for solving large-scale tasks of automating the diagnosis of acute leukemia are considered. The high density of leukocyte cells in the preparation (hypercellularity) is a feature of microscopic images of bone marrow preparations. It causes the proximity of cells to eachother and their contact with the formation of conglomerates. Measuring of the characteristics of bone marrow cells in such conditions leads to unacceptable errors (more than 50%). The work is devoted to segmentation of contiguous cells in images of bone marrow preparations. A method of cell separation during white blood cell segmentation on images of bone marrow preparations under conditions of hypercellularity of the preparation has been developed. The peculiarity of the proposed method is the use of an approach to segmentation of cell images based on the watershed method with markers. Key stages of the method: the formation of initial markers and builds the lines of watershed, a threshold binarization, shading inside the outline. The parameters of the separation of contiguous cells are determined. The experiment confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method. The relative segmentation error was 5 %. The use of the proposed method in information and measurement systems of computer microscopy for automated analysis of bone marrow preparations will help to improve the accuracy of diagnosis of acute leukemia.

Summary Although sport can promote moral values and prosocial behavior in youth, numerous research shows that sports engagement alone does not guarantee that outcome. Instead of striving for fair-play and sport excellence which not exclude justness, solidarity and moral integrity, contemporary sport frequently follows the Lombardian ethic, where „winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing”. Moral pause or bracketed morality, as described in sport, refers to the phenomenon of tolerance and acceptance of aggressive behavior or cheating, that will be morally condemned outside sports arenas. Accordingly, lower levels of moral reasoning and behavior have been identified in athletes and non-athletes in the sports-related situation in comparison to other life situations; in athletes when compared to non-athletes, in more experienced athletes, high-level athletes, team-sport athletes, and male athletes. Moral reasoning and behavior of athletes are influenced by contextual and personal factors, with coaches having a particularly important role to play. The positive influence of sport on the moral development of athletes might be related to pre-service and in-service education of coaches how to develop adequate moral atmosphere, and how to plan for moral decision-making as an integral part of everyday practice.

Total twenty different processed meat plant producing emulsion type sausage were histologically and chemically examined for detection of adulteration with unauthorized tissues. Results revealed that samples were adulterated with different types of animal tissues included; hyaline cartilage, tendon, spongy bone, peripheral nerve trunk, basophilic matrix, lymphatic tissue, fascia, fibrocartilage and vascular tissue. Moreover, these samples were adulterated Also, adulterated with plant tissue included; plant stem, leaves and root. Chemical analysis showed a significant difference in their chemical composition (moisture, fat, protein, ash and calcium) content. Moisture and fat content varied around the permissible limit of E.S.S. while low protein, high ash and calcium content was detected in the examined samples. Therefore, Histological and chemical examinations can be used as reliable methods to detect adultration using unauthorized addition of both animal and plant tissues in processed meat product samples which revealed a high level of falsification.

Background: The potential use of nanocarriers is being explored rapidly for the targeted delivery of anticancer agents. Curcumin is a natural polyphenolic compound obtained from rhizomes of turmeric, belongs to family Zingiberaceae. It possesses chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic activity with low toxicity in almost all types of cancer. The low solubility and bioavailability of curcumin make it unable to use for the clinical purpose. The necessity of an effective strategy to overcome the limitations of curcumin is responsible for the development of its nanocarriers. Objective: This study is aimed to review the role of curcumin nanocarriers for the treatment of cancer with special emphasis on cellular uptake and in vitro cytotoxicity studies. In addition to this, the effect of various ligand conjugated curcumin nanoparticles on different types of cancer was also studied. Methods: A systematic review was conducted by extensively surfing the PubMed, science direct and other portals to get the latest update on recent development in nanocarriers of curcumin. Results: The current data from recent studies showed that nanocarriers of curcumin resulted in the targeted delivery, higher efficacy, enhanced bioavailability and lower toxicity. The curcumin nanoparticles showed significant inhibitory effects on cancer cells as compared to free curcumin. Conclusion: It can be concluded that bioavailability of curcumin and its cytotoxic effect to cancer cells can be enhanced by the development of curcumin based nanocarriers and it was found to be a potential drug delivery technique for the treatment of cancer.

BACKGROUND: The underlying morphology and behavior of abdominal muscles during breathing are still lacking in knowledge in healthy population. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of three different types of breathing on the architectural characteristics of abdominal muscles. METHODS: Ninety-eight healthy subjects were measured to assess the effects of breathing on the abdominal muscles, subjects performed three different types of breathing and the muscular thickness was measured with ultrasound imaging, analyzing also the differences between sexes. RESULTS: During the three different types of breathing and in comparison with the resting state, an increase of the thickness has been reported in the transversus abdominis (p< 0.001; effect size = 2.44, very large) and internal oblique (p< 0.001; effect size = 1.04, moderate) in both sexes, but with a higher increase in men. External oblique and rectus abdominis increased their thickness through breathing only while the lips were with pursed (p< 0.05) with trivial effect sizes and only differences between sexes were found in rectus abdominis. CONCLUSIONS: All breathings activated the deepest abdominal muscles, but the most superficial were only activated with lips pursed. Moreover, men appeared to activate more the deepest abdominal muscles but also the rectus abdominis. Findings in this study support the use of different types of breathing depending on the muscle to be activated or the sex, helping health care professionals to address their interventions on the abdominal muscles with a more focused approach.

AbstractOver 600 alkaloids have to date been identified in the plant family Amaryllidaceae. These have been arranged into as many as 15 different groups based on their characteristic structural features. The vast majority of studies on the biological properties of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids have probed their anticancer potential. While most efforts have focused on the major alkaloid groups, the volume and diversity afforded by the minor alkaloid groups have promoted their usefulness as targets for cancer cell line screening purposes. This survey is an in-depth review of such activities described for around 90 representatives from 10 minor alkaloid groups of the Amaryllidaceae. These have been evaluated against over 60 cell lines categorized into 18 different types of cancer. The montanine and cripowellin groups were identified as the most potent, with some in the latter demonstrating low nanomolar level antiproliferative activities. Despite their challenging molecular architectures, the minor alkaloid groups have allowed for facile adjustments to be made to their structures, thereby altering the size, geometry, and electronics of the targets available for structure-activity relationship studies. Nevertheless, it was seen with a regular frequency that the parent alkaloids were better cytotoxic agents than the corresponding semisynthetic derivatives. There has also been significant interest in how the minor alkaloid groups manifest their effects in cancer cells. Among the various targets and pathways in which they were seen to mediate, their ability to induce apoptosis in cancer cells is most appealing.
