The Importance of Systems Methodologies for Industrial and Scientific National Wealthy and Development

The relationship between industrial and scientific knowledge and systems methodologies is discussed in this paper. As the measure of the former on the macro level, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is assumed to be the consequence of systems’ Research and Development (R&D), which is estimated indirectly by the number of articles published in academic journals in the last 40 years. It is assumed that Production, Management and Information Systems (IS) can be considered suitable main representatives of the quality of organizational processes and that GDP is their consequence. In turn, the Systems Approach (SA), Systems Engineering (SE), Operational Research (OR), Information Systems Development (ISD) and Simulation represent the methodology set for coping with organizational complex processes. We looked for the articles containing the aforementioned variables as topic keywords in core scientific databases. Results show a sufficient correlation between the number of publications and the GDP.

The Relevance of Systems Methodologies in the Development of Organizational SystemsThe relationship between systems development and systems methodologies is discussed in this paper. As the measure of system development on the macro level, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is assumed to be the consequence of systems Research and Development (R&D), which is estimated indirectly by the number of published articles in the last 40 years. It was supposed that profit and governmental organizations are systems comprised of Production, Management and Information Systems (IS), and that their quality performance is related with its income generation, which in the future would impact the overall GDP of a country. Under such view, we also assume that such organizational processes are qualitatively improved by the application of knowledge generated by research publications, and in this study, we research for the specific case of the Systems Approach (SA), Systems Engineering (SE), Operational Research (OR), Information Systems Development (ISD) and Simulation, as the research topics for coping with organizational improvement. We looked for the articles containing the afore-mentioned variables as topic keywords, which indicate sufficient correlations with GDP and carrying information on sustainable development. We found a positive trend in the evolution of research methodologies, such as SE, ISD and OR, towards a Systems Approach and Simulation as a holistic methodology. As a result, we have proved the dynamic hypothesis of a high correlation between GDP of Top 10 + Slovenia and R&D expressed by the above-mentioned variables.

Information systems research has clearly recognized that knowledge management systems (KMSs) have different characteristics and requirements than those of a classic management information system (MIS). Beginning with the relationship drawn between data, information, and knowledge (Alavi & Leidner, 1999, 2001; Bhatt, 2001; Ulrich, 2001; Spiegler, 2000, 2003; Tuomi, 2000), through to the essential nature of unstructured and semi-structured information vs. structured information (Wu, Ling, Lee, & Dobbie, 2001; Lai, Carlsen, Christiansson, & Svidt, 2003; Fensel et al., 2002; Chou & Chow, 2000), there are many elements and areas in which the two diverge.

The systems approach is frequently associated with solving large-scale, complex problems and is regarded as a foundation for systems engineering and decision-making. Components of the systems approach are too frequently missing from information systems programs in business schools. The purpose of this paper is to determine the degree to which the IS 2010: Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs contains the systems approach in its learning objectives as well as specific course content. By examining the curriculum guidelines a preliminary judgment can be made concerning evidence of the systems approach having a broad implementation across information systems programs. The paper concludes with a discussion of the importance of the systems approach in the IS curriculum and establishing the systems approach as a theme in the curriculum of IS programs.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity in the globe, with more than half of patients reporting pain as a result of the disease. By reducing cancer-related pain, dance has the potential to redefine the life of patients independently of their cure prognosis. This review investigated the benefits of dance as adjuvant, non-pharmacological therapy for cancer treatment. To identify studies related to this topic, we searched the Cochrane Library, PUBMED, Scielo, BVS, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases. However, we found few published systematic reports investigating the effects of dance in cancer treatment. The numbers are even smaller when we considered the relationship between dance and cancer pain. Although there is a small number of publications on this theme, we reviewed studies that indicate that there is a positive relationship between dance practice and cancer pain management. Moreover, we found that the decline of pain contributed to the better life quality of patients with cancer. We concluded that dance is a physical practice that may improve patients’ quality of life. Regarding the estimations of cancer diagnosis and pain during disease development and therapy, it is fundamental new studies and clinical trials that integrate dance as adjuvant therapy for improving cancer pain and patient’s life quality.

This volume of the magnificent series of the major anatomy and pathology of the systems of the human organism illustrated by Dr. Netter is a fine example of the high quality of this series. The illustrations are beautifully reproduced with great clarity. The drawings attempt the difficult task of illustration of the relationship between form and function and succeed well in graphically portraying present concepts of upper gastrointestinal physiology. The charts on mastication, vomiting, hunger and deglutition are particularly excellent examples of the graphic arts in the explanation of such complex processes. The text accompanying the illustrations is succinct, precise and well written.

This paper offers a paradigmatic analysis of digital application marketplaces for advancing information systems research on digital platforms and ecosystems. We refer to the notion of digital application marketplace, colloquially called ‘appstores,’ as a platform component that offers a venue for exchanging applications between developers and end users belonging to a single or multiple ecosystems. Such marketplaces exhibit diversity in features and assumptions, and we propose that examining this diversity, and its ideal types, will help us to further understand the relationship between application marketplaces, platforms, and platform ecosystems. To this end, we generate a typology that distinguishes four kinds of digital application marketplaces: closed, censored, focused, and open marketplaces. The paper also offers implications for actors wishing to make informed decisions about their relationship to a particular digital application marketplace.

Patient care in the registration section of the hospital is a very important activity, because there is a recording of patient data that will be used by other health workers in providing further health care. The use of information technology in the registration section can increase work effectiveness and efficiency and produce accurate information. For this reason, it is necessary to analyze the factors that affect the benefits of using information technology in the registration section. This study aims to examine the relationship between the quality of information systems, the ability of officers and the performance of information users at RSI Siti Rahmah Padang, Indonesia. The research was conducted with survey method and data analysis using a quantitative approach. From the research results, it was found that the quality of information systems did not affect the benefits of using information technology. Meanwhile, the ability and performance of officers affect the benefits of using information technology. It is suggested that the scope of the use of information technology in the medical records section be increased. It is necessary to increase the ability of officers in the use of information technology by holding training or workshops.
