Self-Sustainability in Academic Libraries in the Digital Era

Libraries are storehouses of knowledge and act as disseminating agents for the knowledge producer because knowledge accrued from library is invariably implemented in creating new knowledge. The libraries are agents for knowledge collection, utilization, and dissemination. In all these processes, finance plays a major role. Shrinking budgets (Anna, 1994) and increases in available resources pressure collection development and the disseminating process. The strategies discussed in this chapter can to some extent help in sorting out this financial crisis depending on suitability and implementing standards. Library and information service is a noble service sector. It is not enough to concentrate on issues inside the library, but one needs to widen the service and address issues outside as well, factors like global warming, chronic health disorders, power shortage, diminishing funds, pollution, up to date literature collection, obsolete technologies, and so on.

The study investigated leadership styles, promotion opportunities, and salary as correlates of turnover intention among librarians in Nigerian academic libraries. It applied the correlational survey design, and data was gathered with a questionnaire. The entire 115 librarians in three (3) universities in South-South, Nigeria formed the population of this study. The data was analyzed with mean and Pearson Moment Correlation (2-tailed). The findings show that the turnover intention of the librarians was high; leadership, promotion opportunities, and salary positively correlate with the turnover intention. The major implication of the findings of the study is that the issue of leadership style, promotion, and salary should be carefully planned by the management of the library, otherwise, the librarians will leave the library whenever the opportunity shows up. These findings provide new data for planning the management of library staff to achieve effective information service in the library.

The authors discuss the study findings and the Library’s experience in integrating open access resources into the resource base of the information support offered to Siberian researchers and scholars. The dynamic technology of resources organization and use calls for continuous monitoring of the open access resources. Using the open access resources as an object of collection development improves the effectiveness of user services and preservation of socially significant content which impacts the libraries’ importance within the system of scientific communications. The library collection as a library’s strategic element is transforming with widening the formats, generic and specific limitations, and integrating traditional collections with the open access resources. This results in the sophisticating organizational and technological model of collection development. The efficiency of integrated open access library services demonstrate the users’ interest to and demand for them. The open access resources have been being increasingly included into the relevant collection development at the academic libraries. The systematic collection of open access resources can operate as a compensational technological system against other expensive resources. Integrating the open access resources into the collections of the State Public Scientific and Technological Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences Siberian Branch proves to be naturally determined and impacts the prospects for collection development.

The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of the modernisation of academic libraries in the ICT era, changing format of the library resources and types of computer-based services being offered by the academic libraries. In view of this, the present chapter discusses various aspects of LIS training and user education, emphasising the need to empower our LIS professionals and library users so that they benefit from the new technologies by using new ICTs for exploring the world of knowledge for their academic pursuit and excellence in higher education and research. The first part of the chapter discusses the recent development in the areas of application of ICT in academic libraries, availability, and usage of electronic resources by the library users, new services provided by the academic libraries to their end users. The second part of the chapter highlights the need for empowering LIS professionals working in academic libraries and their end users in electronic / digital era, enumerates the role of various agencies that are engaged in making library users aware of printed as well as e-resources, and explains the role of Web 2.0/Library 2.0 in making library users more interactive and well informed about the resources, products, and services of the academic libraries to their clientele. The third part of the chapter discusses the user education programme/user awareness programme being organised and offered to the students and research scholars by the Assam University Library (Rabindra Library, Silchar) as a case study. On the basis of the results of a study conducted amongst secondary school teachers of English in Malta, this chapter explores the use of Social Networking Sites (SNS) for professional development purposes. In the digital era, SNS provide teachers with the opportunity of creating a Personal Learning Network (PLN), which is an increasingly significant way of acquiring new knowledge and enhancing pedagogical skills while also having the capacity of making teachers feel they belong to a Community of Practice (CoP). This chapter shows how despite their regular use of SNS for personal reasons, teachers do not always exploit these sites to achieve professional development. It is argued that training is a necessary means of not only enabling teachers to learn how to use such tools for such a purpose but also of redefining the way they think about the process of acquiring and sharing knowledge and skills in the 21st century.
