Entrepreneurship as a Survival-Seeking Strategy for Indigenous Communities

The aim of this chapter is to offer an alternative to the emigration and marginalization currently experienced by indigenous Latin American communities by creating ecotourism ventures in their home territories. By fostering profitable and environmentally sustainable economic activities enabling them to remain in their settlements, it is possible to alleviate the problem of socio-economic marginalization which they currently face whilst helping conserve the environment and their ancient culture. Qualitative research has therefore been conducted by means of a multiple case study. This is an introductory work and the authors' preliminary findings highlight the importance not only of social networks in the creation of indigenous SMEs but also of the culture, values, uses and customs of such communities in the identification of the profile of the indigenous entrepreneur.

In the field of education, case study is a widely used qualitative research methodology. While there are a broad range of approaches to case study, the resources available to researchers is limited. Therefore, this chapter aims to shed some light on what defines a case study and some of the possible methodological variations. The goal of this chapter is to provide the reader with a foundational understanding of a case study as a methodology and how this methodology aligns within various research contexts in the field of education.

This chapter focuses on collective case study: (1) what it is, (2) what separates it from other case study formats (case study and multiple case study), and (3) how to effectively use collective case study design for research. This chapter walks researchers through the overarching components necessary in conducting research using collective case study design, providing helpful strategies and examples the authors have found useful in their own research. While highly useful in qualitative research, this chapter also notes possible challenges to using collective case study design. This chapter concludes with a list of additional resources for more in-depth explorations of the procedural elements addressed.

PurposeThis paper aims to offer evidence-based findings on the under-researched role of finance in the sales and operations planning (S&OP) process, aiming to guide academics and practitioners towards successful S&OP implementations.Design/methodology/approachThe research builds upon a multiple case study, embracing five Latin American subsidiaries of four global manufacturing corporations from the consumer goods, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Following an exploratory approach, the case study results are analysed in within- and cross-case analyses.FindingsThe research findings are synthesised into a framework, demonstrating relevant benefits from the engagement of finance along the S&OP process and the implications of its interactions with traditional S&OP functions as sales, marketing and operations. The paper shows how finance adds value in supporting the process, enabling decisions on costs, margins, capital expenditures and return on investments. Finance strengthens S&OP when assessing demand- and supply-related risks and facilitates comparing the functional business areas' plans to budget. While finance participation is highlighted as necessary for supporting successful S&OP implementations, it also receives valuable inputs in return, characterising a two-way communication role that benefits the entire organisation.Originality/valueThis is the first research paper focusing on empirically exploring the role of finance within S&OP, going beyond initial insights from practice and academia. It provides practitioners and scholars with an in-depth, evidence-based view of finance's integration along the S&OP process.

The use of technology plays an important role on many of the aspects cities face today. The objective of this research is to identify how connectivism is influencing the advertising of housing let or sale in the cities of Portoviejo, Quito, and Riobamba in Ecuador to then compare its scenarios. This investigation is a multiple case study. The method for data collection was a survey applied to 369 suppliers of housing for let or sale in the three cities. Text mining techniques were used for data analysis. Results showed that the majority of housing supplier ranged 25 to 40 years old use the internet, social networks, and platforms to advertise housing let or sale.

This paper is part of a larger qualitative multiple case study that sought to explore the integration of indigenous knowledge in public libraries in South Africa. The paper draws from semi-structured interviews with selected heads of provincial library services in South Africa to determine the extent to which public libraries provide targeted resources to enhance access to IK. Results reveal that that there are no targeted resources to facilitate access to IK. Concerted efforts to facilitate access by increasing the number of libraries were noted. Notwithstanding these efforts, there seems to be a paucity of IK, which has implication for inclusive services. It is recommended that libraries look beyond enabling access to the Internet but also explore how they can further optimise ICT usage as a way of facilitating access to IK through capturing, organising and disseminating knowledge of indigenous communities.

PurposeLiterature identifies the key relevance of human resource management (HRM) in the creation of an organisational performance measurement and management system, while, in practice, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) continue to prioritise financial and operational aspects. This study aims to identify the main characteristics that typify an advanced performance measurement and management system in SMEs, according to the literature dedicated to performance measurement and HRM.Design/methodology/approachThrough a multiple-case study methodology, the research deeply investigates four European SMEs. Empirical data were collected through interviews, company documents and direct observations. Then, within- and cross-case analysis were implemented to analyse the data.FindingsIn designing organisational performance measurement and management systems in SMEs, HRM emerges as essential in supporting the enhancement of the maturity of performance measurement and the improvement of performance management. Through a framework based on the relevant literature, this research identifies three conceptual propositions that highlight the main characteristics that typify advanced performance measurement and management systems in SMEs.Research limitations/implicationsThe research identifies a conceptual framework suitable to investigate empirically the role of HRM in developing performance measurement and management systems at SMEs, and it lays the foundation for future broader empirical studies in this field.Originality/valueThis paper underlines HRM as an important driver in the creation of organisational performance measurement and management systems. Moreover, it suggests some key characteristics that such a system should develop to be effective in the target enterprises.
