Leachate Pollution and Impact to Environment

Pollution prevention is a step towards obtaining a green environment, and no amount of effort in that direction should be considered too great. To this effect, the pollution by leachate and the resultant impact on the environment is discussed in this chapter. Types and sources of pollution, their transfer and effect have been discussed, so as to give a background understanding on pollution and hence provide a platform for its control. The age old waste disposal practice of open dumps and landfilling is discussed, highlighting the dangers of indiscriminate waste dumping and uncontrolled landfilling practices. Although other sources of leachate generation are highlighted, the chapter focuses on leachates from municipal landfills and the effect of its migration. Engineered landfills also known as sanitary landfills have performed better in curtailing the movement of leachates, hence the use of artificial liners or low permeability soils such as the well compacted clayey soils, to eliminate or minimize leachate migration.

The magnitude, effects and trends of marine waste disposal compel the development and adoption of new policies and practices. Since most of the detrimental or beneficial effects are biological, the biological characteristics and uses of the sea provide the proper bases for decisions on the pollution and waste disposal which can be tolerated. Adequate judgement will require substantial increase in our comprehension of the physics, chemistry, and biology of the sea. Effectuation of such judgements may require equal improvement in our govern­mental structures for local, national and international control of pollution. Absolute limits will eventually be required for many types of marine waste disposal, if we are to retain the present biological uses of coastal and marine waters. At some date, prevention of each such pollution will be necessary. Therefore, research plans and management policies should be directed toward adequate preventive techniques. Several stimulating suggestions are noted for re-cycling of wastes, constructive utilization of such resources, and perhaps eventual prevention of marine pollution. The conclusion is presented that pollution must be prevented, at least from large centres of population and of industry, or present important and, in some cases, essential qualities and uses of the sea will be sacrificed over large areas.

Hospital is one of the health care facilities that have complex characteristics especially concerning the interaction between the various processes, scientific devices and various types of health workers who are related to each other. In addition to a positive impact, the Hospital had negative impacts that generate waste during its activities; one of waste is solid medical waste. Solid medical waste is one of the sources of pollution, so it is necessary to conduct an integrated management starting from segregation to the disposal of solid medical waste. Researcher raised this issue because there were incident afflicting health workers and cleaning services at Haji Hospital Jakarta, they were punctured used needles. In a period of 2 years from 2014 to 2015, there had been 5 cases of used needles should not happen. This research use quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative research conducted by distributing a questionnaire to measure the level of knowledge (age, length of work, education, training), facilities and behavior of nurses and cleaning services to the risk of solid medical waste disposal activities. The qualitative research conducted with in-depth interviews. Result of the relation between nurse knowledge against the risk of solid medical waste disposal based on the result of the t-test 1.661 < t-table 2000. Result of the relation between nurse behavior with the risk of medical waste disposal activities based on the result of the t-test 1.975 < t-table 2000. Result of the relation between of the level nurse knowledge and nurse behavior with the risk of solid medical waste disposal based on the result f-count 3.036 < f-table 3.35. So there is no relation between nurse knowledge and nurse behavior with the risk of medical waste disposal activities at Haji Hospital Jakarta.

Waste disposal is an element of integrated waste management. Properly designed projects for landfill construction ensure safe waste disposal with minimal environmental impact. The first part of this paper discusses and analyses waste management and landfills in Serbia. The second part describes the factors contributing to landfill gas (LFG) generation. The influence of several factors on LFG generation is shown on the basis of measurements of LFG components concentrations and of the analysed wastewater samples taken from “Pirot” Regional Sanitary Landfill. Depending on the contributory factors, provision of optimal conditions at the landfill accelerates waste decomposition, in turn producing larger quantities of LFG, with the ultimate goal of proper controlled LFG management. The paper presents guidelines for controlled LFG management, the implementation of which would automatically meet the requirements and recommendations of both domestic and European legislation.

This work aimed to estimate the annual methane production from the municipal solid waste disposal sites in Pakistan. In this study, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) default methodology was used to estimate theoretical methane formation potential of the waste disposal sites in major cities of Pakistan. The estimates of this study are based on the last population census conducted in the year 2017 and latest available data regarding the waste generation and management practices in the cities considered in the study. Results showed that 31.18 million tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) is generated annually. The top 10 major populated cities in Pakistan (with 20% share in country’s population) contributing 31% share in the total quantity of MSW generated in overall country. On average 50–60% of the MSW generated is collected and openly dumped at the designated waste disposal sites. After analyzing the data, we estimate that annually 12.8 MtCO2-eq of methane is emitted from the waste disposal sites in major cities considered in this study. The methane produced from the waste disposal sites can be sustainably utilized as a source of energy through transforming MSW disposal sites (open dumps) to sanitary landfills with methane capturing and utilization facilities. In the present scenario of waste management and methane formation potential, sanitary landfills would generate 62.35 MWh of electric power if 25% of the methane was recovered and utilized in power generation.

The distinguishing characteristics of clay are high cohesion and low permeability. For slurry shield tunnelling in clayey soils, favorable aspects are that slurry cake with low permeability can be established more easily and effectively at the excavation face thanks to clay’s high cohesion, which is advantageous for stability of excavation face, and long stand-up time of clay offers enough time for backfilling of the tail void before collapse of surrounding soils, thus lessening ground volume loss. However, some typical problems are encountered due to clay’s high cohesion and low permeability. One primary problem is the clogging of slurry pipeline, once in case of which, slurry pressure will fluctuate severely, thus inducing unstable condition at the excavation face. In extreme cases, the pipeline bursts and soils at the excavation face collapse towards the cutterhead for immediate drop of slurry pressure. Another common problem is clay’s adhesion to the cutterhead, which weakens the excavation efficiency of cutterhead and limits advance rate of the shield machine. Tunnelling will inevitably disturb surrounding soils and excess pore water pressure occurs. In clayey soils, due to clay’s low permeability, it usually takes quite a long time for the excess pore water pressure to disperse completely. The consolidation settlements associated with pore water dispersing account for a large percentage of the total settlements. Accumulated ground settlements threaten structures and pipelines nearby. For these problems encountered during slurry shield tunnelling in clayey soils, both preventive and counter measures are put forward in detail in this study. The proposed measures can be used as a reference to avoid, mitigate and deal with problems encountered during slurry shield tunnelling in clayey soils.

Energy recovery potential of a mesophilic co-digester treating OFMSW and primary sludge at an integrated biomethanization plant was investigated based on feasibility study results. Since landfilling is still the main solid waste disposal method in Turkey, land scarcity will become one of the most important obstacles. Restrictions for biodegradable waste disposal to sanitary landfills in EU Landfill Directive and uncontrolled long-term contamination with gas emissions and leachate necessitate alternative management strategies due to rapid increase in MSW production. Moreover, since energy contribution from renewable resources will be required more in the future with increasing oil prices and dwindling supplies of conventional energy sources, the significance of biogas as a renewable fuel has been increased in the last decade. Results indicated that almost 93% of annual total cost can be recovered if 100% renewable energy subsidy is implemented. Besides, considering the potential revenue when replacing transport fuels, about 26 heavy good vehicles or 549 cars may be powered per year by the biogas produced from the proposed biomethanization plant (PE = 100,000; XPS= 61 g TS/PE⋅day;XSS-OFMSW=50 g TS/PE⋅day).
