The Relationship Between Social Justice Issues and Emotional Intelligence (EI)

This chapter discussed issues of injustice as often affecting the emotional, and in some cases, the physical well-being of a person. In recent years, researchers have begun to explore the role of Emotional Intelligence (EI) in creating awareness when it comes to social justice issues related to areas such as racism, sexism, heterosexism, etc. The purpose of this chapter is twofold: First, to concentrate on the area of social justice issues to find out what the literature has explored in terms of the role Emotional Intelligence (EI) might play when it comes to dealing with social oppression, and second, to advocate emotional intelligence traits that can be successfully used to cope with social oppression. We reviewed the literature as a way to deepen our understanding of how to foster “socially conscious” practices within the workplace. The chapter has implications for Human Resource Development (HRD) practitioners to remind them of the responsibility they have to encourage and welcome studies and practices addressing critical aspects such as social justice issues as a way to help ensure a productive and safe workplace. Through this review of the literature, we found that emotional intelligence traits, if practiced responsibly, can make society a better place for everyone to live and work in.

Traditional Human Resource Management (HRM) focusing on maintaining the status quo is no longer in the spotlight. Sustainable HRM has become the new approach, emphasizing the need to attend to organizational results directed toward reaching different goals and integrating the needs of diverse stakeholders. Moreover, in response to the challenges that organizations face in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments, Human Resource (HR) practices can contribute to the development of idiosyncratic deals (negotiation of individual HR practices) that might facilitate employees’ creativity and eudaimonic well-being in the long term and, thus, the sustainability of these organizations. Thus, the aim of this study is to test the mediating role of idiosyncratic deals (i-deals) in the unfolding relationship between HR practices, eudaimonic well-being and creative performance. Using a longitudinal database (three waves), the hypotheses are tested using structural equations modeling. The results support the idea that HR practices function as an antecedent for i-deals. More specifically, i-deals fully mediate the relationship between HR practices and eudaimonic well-being. In turn, i-deals and eudaimonic well-being fully mediate the relationship between HR practices and creative performance, which suggests that, through i-deals, HR practices become more beneficial for both employees and employers. In conclusion, these results are important for sustainable HR development, because HR practices enhance i-deals, which increase well-being, enhancing performance in the long term.

The Problem Although there have been a plethora of studies on the determinants of customer delight in marketing literature, less attention has been given to understand the role of employees’ work engagement and psychological capital (PsyCap) in satisfying and delighting customers. The objective of the present study is threefold—the first is to examine how engaged employees are positive and efficacious; the second is to investigate how engaged, positive, and efficacious employees delight patients specifically in the health care sector; and the third is to examine how the relationship between employees’ positive PsyCap and customer delight is mediated by beneficiary contact, which is the perception of employees about the meaningful impact of their efforts on their patients. The Solution Previous studies have shown that employees who are absorbed, dedicated, and immersed in their work are more confident and positive at their workplace. Engaged, positive, and confident employees not only keep themselves but also their customers happy and positive through their optimistic outlook and efficacious work behavior. Responses are collected from 200 employees and their 200 patients from different hospitals of India. Hierarchical regression analysis shows a significant and positive relationship between work engagement, PsyCap, and customer delight. Work engagement is found to predict PsyCap and customer delight. Beneficiary contact is found to mediate between the relationship of PsyCap and customer delight. The originality of the article lies in its interdisciplinary approach to understand how engaged and dedicated employees keep themselves and their patients positive and delighted. The Stakeholders This study is of relevance to human resource development (HRD) professionals, customer relationship managers of the health care sector, and also academicians belonging to the disciplines of marketing and human resource management. The findings of this study would help them understand how engaged employees lead to employees’ positive PsyCap and customer delight. Furthermore, they will also understand the vital role of the interface between employees and customers, as beneficiary contact mediates the relationship of employees’ PsyCap and customer delight.

The purpose in this study was to examine the relationship between the Big Five personality factors and psychological well-being of adolescents and the moderating role of emotional intelligence in that relationship. Adolescents (N = 400) randomly selected from secondary schools in southwestern Nigeria completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (Costa & McCrae, 1992), and emotional intelligence (Law, Wong, & Song, 2004), and psychological well-being (Ruff & Keyes, 1995) scales. It was found that personality factors and emotional intelligence had significant correlations with psychological well-being. Emotional intelligence moderated the relationship between neuroticism, extraversion, and psychological well-being. Implications for counseling adolescents and directions for future research are suggested.

Eudaimonic well-being is related to activities that lead to self-realization and personal development, goals and growth. Emotional intelligence and personality traits play a role in the perception of emotions, self-esteem and motivation and therefore in well-being. Although previous studies have analyzed the relationship among personality, emotional intelligence and well-being, the relationship between all three constructs and the predictive value of personality and emotional intelligence in the study of eudaimonic well-being in adolescents remains to be analyzed. This study evaluates this relationship and the predictive role of personality and emotional intelligence in eudaimonic well-being in 1031 Spanish secondary school students aged 12 to 17 (49.37% male, average age = 14.91 years). A quantitative field survey was conducted which included the distribution of the eudaimonic well-being questionnaire, the emotional intelligence questionnaire and the personality questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and correlations among eudaimonic well-being, emotional intelligence and personality well-being were calculated using SPSS Statistical Package software. Stepwise multiple regression was used to estimate the predictive value of personality and emotional intelligence in the study of eudaimonic well-being. Finally, a structural equations model was designed with AMOS software. The results show that these constructs are related and that personality and emotional intelligence are important variables for eudaimonic well-being. In addition, activity and anxiety factors (related to personality) and emotionality and well-being factors (related to trait emotional intelligence) have been shown to have predictive value in the study of eudaimonic well-being in adolescents. These results underline the value of personality and emotional intelligence in the study of eudaimonic well-being and present new research perspectives.

Abstract Background and purpose: The recent literature established that human resource development (HRD) is significantly related to organizational effectiveness (OE). In rapidly changing environments, the organizations should strive to address the shifts in the environment and cope with markets conditions through developing dynamic capabilities, in return, enhance organizational effectiveness. The main purpose of this study is to examine the mediating role of dynamic capabilities on the relationship between human resources development and organizational effectiveness in the Iraqi public universities context. Design/Methodology/Approach: Data were collected through an online questionnaire survey from 215 employees executive and non-executive employees working in the selected public universities in Iraq. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the proposed research model. Results: The analyzed data supported all the hypothesized relationships of the study. This study finds that HRD practices have a significant influence on organizational effectiveness and dynamic capabilities. Further, dynamic capabilities significantly influence on organizational effectiveness. Also, the study empirically supports the mediating effect of dynamic capabilities on the relationship between HRD practices and organizational effectiveness. Conclusion: In the literature, there is still a lack of how HRD practices impact on organizational effectiveness through the mechanisms of dynamic capabilities. Therefore, this research contributes to the literature by pointing out the mediating role of dynamic capabilities on the relationship between HRD and organizational effectiveness. Based on the existing literature and empirical results, the study provides the theoretical and practical implications which are further discussed in detail.

Introduction/objective: HR practices have been widely studied in the literature. However, critical research gaps remain unexplored. Little attention has been paid to the relationship between HR practices and well-being, or the mechanisms that explain the effect of HR on employees’ wellbeing, and the role of gender in this relationship. Hence, this study aims to examine the relationship between HR practices and well-being (eudemonic and hedonic) through organizational justice, taking into account gender. Method: A convenience sampling technique was used in a correlational design. The sample was composed of 1647 employees from 42 Spanish organizations. Our measures were HR practices, organizational justice, and hedonic and eudemonic wellbeing. Multi-group structural equation models were computed. Results: The results supported our hypothesis, which mainly stated that (1) organizational justice (distributive, procedural and interactional justice) mediated the relationship between HR practices and eudemonic and hedonic well-being; (2) there were differences between men and women in this mediation. Conclusions: Human resource practices and organizational justice offer tools to HR managers in order to maintain and improve employees’ well-being levels within their organizations.

This review of the literature focuses on an increasingly prevalent global phenomenon known as national occupational standards (NOSs). As the term suggests, NOSs present specific information describing the requirements for individuals’ qualifications to enter and perform successfully in a specific occupation. Many countries rely upon information from NOSs as part of their broader workforce development efforts. In spite of their prevalence, there remain critical questions about their eventual adoption by employers, a situation that HRD researchers could potentially help address based on the unique perspective of the HRD field. This paper seeks to review what is known about NOSs, to discuss the challenges related to their implementation at the organizational and national levels, and finally, to propose how HRD researchers, through their unique perspectives, might contribute to addressing the challenges most commonly encountered when implementing NOSs. It is expected that through this greater awareness, HRD professionals might be able to advance the effective use of this important global phenomenon.

We examined emotional intelligence (EI) and self-esteem as mediators of the relationship between adult attachment orientations and subjective well-being (SWB). A total of 585 undergraduates from 2 Chinese universities completed measures of the 4 variables. Bootstrap mediation analysis revealed that both EI and self-esteem acted as mediators of the relationship. In addition, a serial mediating role of EI via self-esteem was found. The findings are consistent with predictions derived from attachment theory, and expand on a growing body of research findings on the association between adult attachment orientations and SWB. Implications of the findings and limitations in the study are discussed.
