Enhancing Participation in Computer Science among Girls of Color

To address disparities in computing among girls of color, this chapter examines the impact of a multi-year, out-of-school computer science intervention with n=108 female high school students of color. This rigorous and comprehensive 5-week computer science intervention designed within a culturally-relevant framework, demonstrated the following outcomes: 1) one exposure to the intervention demonstrated a significant impact on computer science knowledge, attitudes, and access to diverse peers/role models, 2) the impact of the intervention endured after a 9-month period, and 3) repeated-exposure to the intervention (2 sequential 5-week interventions) produced greater growth than just one summer. These findings suggest that short-term interventions can be impactful, and repeated exposure opportunities are needed to increase growth in knowledge, attitudes, and aspirations among girls of color in computing. This research provides preliminary data for a model for effective programming for girls of color in computer science and has implications for practitioners, researchers, and policymakers.

The impact teachers have on their students is imprinted to a much extent in each person’s life. Every child, teenager or adult speaks of present or previous experiences related to teachers who left their marks on their development in life. Teachers are important people in children’s life providing them with education, discipline, motivation and role-models. The guiding role of teachers is not limited to school classroom and school disciplines, but it surpasses didactic activities and extends into personal life. Truth is that children feel differently the influence exerted by teachers due to their sensitivity, personalities, life experiences. The identification of the aspects that influence students to a greater or less extent is important as it helps to shape a profile of an authentic teacher as s/he is perceived by students. Such a perspective may help teachers become aware of their role in students’ lives and as a consequence they should make adjustments in order to become better partners for their students.The present paper intends to study teachers’ impact on students in their life lifelong development. The aspects taken into consideration, according to specific literature and experiences in classrooms, were: school performances, behavioural patterns, adjustment to school requirements, motivation for learning, professional choices for future careers, outlooks on life. The research methods were the investigation based on questionnaire, the conversation and the systematic observation. The participants in the research were 200 students from two school levels: high school (students 15-19 years old) and faculty (students 19-30 years old). The data collected were processed using the SPSS analysis. The results of the research could be used to increase teachers’ awareness on their impact on students in their lifelong development.

This chapter reports on the development a formal social mechanism for interaction among female IT role models, such as industry executives and recent college graduates, higher education IT academicians, and female middle school and high school students. The GETSMART (Getting Everyone To Study Math and Related Technologies) program is designed to address the national issue of low female participation in the computer science and information systems fields. The goal of this initiative is to create an innovative educational and mentoring program that encourages women to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The comments of the GETSMART participants serve as a feedback loop to the program executive and academic leaders and indicate the importance of teachers, parents, role models and early STEM experiences in formation of interest in STEM.

Его результаты могут быть использованы при проектировании работы по углубленной подготовке старшеклассников с учетом межпредметных связей и практико-ориентированного подхода к обучению. In this article an analysis of Information Technology books (10-11 grades) on the topic "Minimization of logical expressions" is represented. Its results can be used in the design of work on in-depth training of high school students, taking into account intersubject connections and a practice-oriented approach to teaching.

There is an alarming trend in the information technology (IT) career field: fewer women than in the past are entering the IT educational pipeline (Camp, 1997; Cukier, Shortt, & Devine, 2002; Whitaker, 2000; Woszczynski, Myers & Beise, 2004). Researchers have discovered a number of possible causes for this dearth including lack of female role models (Ahuja, 2002; Trauth, 2002), the “nerd” image (Braham, 1992; Menagh, 1998; Van Brussel, 1992), and family distractions (Ahuja, 2002; Trauth, 2002). With approximately 50% of the general workforce comprised of women in the United States, this statistic is alarming. At the same time, the IT skills shortage is rapidly becoming a global concern (Cukier et al., 2002; Trauth, 2002; Verton, 2004). The message is clear: something radical needs to be done now to attract and retain qualified, talented women to the IT field. The general understanding of IT can be seen as an obstacle to attracting job candidates. When junior and senior high school students were asked about their perceptions of IT workers, the majority responded with terms like “weird”, “nerd”, and “geek (Menagh, 1998; Van Brussel, 1992). The derogatory tone is unmistakable since socialization practices of young girls influence their career choices long before they enter universities (Ahuja, 2002). The basic definition of IT learned through industry and government agencies invokes the areas of computer science and engineering (Cukier et al., 2002). The lack of a concise definition of IT precludes development of a deeper understanding of the problem (Woszczynski et al., 2004). In the past, technology workers have been required to possess strong mathematical and technical skills to create algorithms and to program in tedious computer languages (Weinberg, 1971). This practice ignores the multidimensional nature of IT work. Many workers enter the IT field through paths other than computer science or engineering education programs. So, why is the definition of IT so narrowly focused on these two areas? The purpose of this article is to explore the influence of gender on perceptions of technology. Next, relevant literature from the information systems field is reviewed, followed by a comparison of definitions found in academic articles, textbooks, and practitioner journals. The next section describes the methods and results of a 2004 study on definitions of technology of undergraduate students (Buche, 2005). Themes extracted from their definitions are compared based on gender. Following the results, a first attempt at a gender-sensitive definition is proposed. The article ends with future trends and conclusions for managers and academics.

The rapid evolvement of the computing domain has posed challenges in attempting to bridge the gap between school and the contemporary world of computing, which is related to content, learning culture, and professional norms. We believe that the interaction of high-school students who major in computer science or software engineering with leading representatives ofthe computing community of practice may motivate them to pursue their studies further or pursue a career in the field. Accordingly, our program aims at exposing talented high-school students "directly by leading experts" to state-of-the-art computing research, advanced technologies, software engineering methodologies, and professional norms. The interaction between the students and the experts, who actually become role models for the students, occurs at two levels: (a) during enrichment plenary meetings, and (b) through one-to-one interaction in which students develop software projects under the apprenticeship-based supervision of professionals from the computing community of practice. In the last four years, six hundred students participated in enrichment activities; 86 of these students accomplished high-level software projects under the supervision of experts.

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational camps and fellowships that specifically target underrepresented populations in STEM fields, such as Latinas, have become more common place across the United States. In this article, we analyze multimodal ways of representing, opportunities, and role-models present at these camps, which together assemble an environment that uplifts participants with greater knowledge about possible STEM educational/career pathways and develops within participants an identity as future STEM professionals. We place identity and the power of imagination front and center in our study and through a multimodal systemic functional linguistics approach (Przymus et al., 2020), we analyze the experience of six Latina high school students and document all meaning-making textual interactions that moved these Latina STEM Fellowship (LSF) participants from imagined to in- practice and performed STEM identities. Results indicate that participants are deeply aware of the stereotype threat and identity contingencies that face Latinas in STEM careers, but that interacting with other high school Latina peers and with accomplished Latina scientists at the LSF worked to counteract these challenges and discourses of deficit.

<div>We present here an interdisciplinary workshop on the subject of biomolecules offered to undergraduate and high-school students with the aim of boosting their interest toward all areas of science contributing to the study of life. The workshop involves Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Biology. Based on our own areas of research, molecular modeling is chosen as central axis as it involves all disciplines. In order to provide a strong biological motivation for the study of the dynamics of biomolecules, the theme of the workshop is the origin of life. </div><div>All sessions are built around active pedagogies, including games, and a final poster presentation.</div>

The relationships that exist among brothers and sisters have been much less researched and observed than other kinds of family relationships. Thus, the impact of sibling dyads' gender and age difference on Turkish adolescents' communication satisfaction and trust was examined. The sample consisted of 272 (154 female, 118 male) Turkish high school students, all of whom were aged between 14 and 18 years and had 1 younger sibling. They were asked to complete the Sibling Communication Satisfaction Scale and the Dyadic Trust Scale. A significant gender difference was obtained for both trust and communication satisfaction, wherein females were more likely than males were to trust and be satisfied with their level of communication with their siblings, especially in the case of same-gender siblings. However, no significant result was found for age difference in terms of either trust or communication satisfaction.
