In earlier days, people ran their applications or programs on a physical computer or a server. Cloud computing is a kind of Internet-based computing, where shared resources, data and information are provided to computers and other devices on-demand. Many business organizations were moving towards cloud because it provides flexibility, disaster recovery, security, collaboration etc., Relational Databases ruled the IT Industries for almost 40 years. Limitations of relational database lead to the rise of cloud database. A cloud database is a database that typically runs on a cloud computing platform. Cloud databases are on the rise as more and more businesses look to capitalize on the advantages of cloud computing to power their business applications. Cloud databases are mainly used in data mining, data warehousing and business intelligence. This chapter deals with different types of cloud database and how database influence capacity planning.

Cloud solutions provide a powerful computing platform that enables individuals and Cloud users to perform a wide range of tasks, such as using an online storage system, implementing business applications, developing customized computer software, and establishing a realistic network environment. The number of people using cloud services has increased dramatically in recent years, and a massive amount of data has been stored in cloud computing environments. As a result, data breaches in cloud services are increasing year after year as a result of hackers who are constantly attempting to exploit cloud architecture's security vulnerabilities. In this paper, we investigate and analyse real-world cloud attacks in order to demonstrate the techniques used by hackers against cloud computing systems and how to prevent such malicious activities.

Connecting heterogeneous databases through the World Wide Web (WWW) is crucial for most business organizations. The underlying complex problem is the handling of heterogeneity and communication between different data repositories (or database systems). Such interoperability is crucial as it enables the integration of business processes across different business organizations, and therefore becomes a key issue within the new generation of Web-based business applications (called Web Services). CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) provides protocols and components that allow interoperability between different software platforms (Tari & Bukhres, 2001), such as C++ and Java. However, CORBA does not deal with WWW-based interoperability. In this paper we propose an extension of one of the core elements of CORBA, called Portable Object Adapter (POA), to deal with persistency of business information. The proposed extension, called CODAR, manages the whole life cycle of persistent objects, including activation, deactivation, instantiation, and deletion. At the end of this paper we describe an extension of CODAR to deal with performance by including advanced caching and prefetching techniques.

The influence of the two fast evolving paradigms, Big Data and Cloud Computing, is driving a revolution in different fields of computing. The field of databases is not an exception and has been influenced profoundly by these two forces. Cloud computing is adding to the drive towards making the database available as a service on the cloud. It is shifting the traditional ways in which data is stored, accessed, and manipulated with the appearance of the NoSQL concept and domain specific databases, consequential in moving computing closer to data. This chapter provides a general idea of the changes brought about by the upcoming paradigms in database storage, management, and access, and also provides a brief account of the recent research in the field.

The Cloud is a computing platform that provides on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable resources such as networks, servers and storage that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort from clients. At its core, Cloud computing focuses on maximizing the effectiveness of the shared resources. Therefore, workflow scheduling is one of the challenges that the Cloud must tackle especially if a large number of tasks are executed on geographically distributed servers. This entails the need to adopt an effective scheduling algorithm in order to minimize task completion time (makespan). Although workflow scheduling has been the focus of many researchers, a handful efficient solutions have been proposed for Cloud computing. In this paper, we propose the LPSO, a novel algorithm for workflow scheduling problem that is based on the Particle Swarm Optimization method. Our proposed algorithm not only ensures a fast convergence but also prevents getting trapped in local extrema. We ran realistic scenarios using CloudSim and found that LPSO is superior to previously proposed algorithms and noticed that the deviation between the solution found by LPSO and the optimal solution is negligible.

Cloud Computing emerged as a major paradigm over the years. Major challenges it poses to computer science are related to latency, scale, and reliability issues. It leverages strong economical aspects and provides sound answers to questions like energy consumption, high availability, elasticity, or efficient computing resource utilization. Many Cloud Computing platform and solution providers resort to virtualization as key underlying technology. Properties like isolation, multi-virtual machine parallelism, load balancing, efficient resource utilization, and dynamic pre-allocation besides economic factors make it attractive. It not only legitimates the spread of several types of data stores supporting a variety of data modes, but also inherently requires different types of load: (i) analytical; (ii) Transactional/Update-intensive; and (iii) mixed real-time feed processing. The authors survey how database systems can best leverage virtualization properties in cloud scenarios. The authors show that read mostly database systems and especially column stores profit from virtualization in analytical and search scenarios. Secondly, cloud analytics virtualized database systems are efficient in transactional scenarios such as Cloud CRM virtualized database systems lag. The authors also explore how the nature of mixed cloud loads can be best reflected by virtualization properties like load balancing, migration, and high availability.

The particular prevalent problem connected with cloud is confidentiality, security, as well as reliability etc., in which how the cloud provider assures. To recognize this, a novel architecture is usually introduced that will integrates cloud database services and as well executing concurrent operations on encrypted information. Also a new homomorphic encryption algorithm will likely be incorporated to offer confidentiality as well as concurrent execution of various SQL operations. This will be the first option supporting quite a few distributed clienteles to access encrypted cloud databases. One of main thing is that it eliminates advanced proxies in between cloud user and provider.The performance on the architecture is usually calculated by means of theoretical and practical results which are subjected to TPC-C benchmark standard tools for a number of clients as well as network latencies.</p>
