Ethical Behavior and the Development Paradigm

Marketplace ethical behaviour is quite difficult to practice because it stands at cross purposes with commercial objectives. Both companies and consumers look for short term benefits in preference over practices that are sustainable or planet friendly. The thinking that dominates development economics globally is to buy, use and throw. Companies like to launch new products all the time encouraging consumers to buy new and bigger models, packaged attractively, on which margins are higher, throwing away perfectly fine and working products. Ethical behaviour – whether it is sourcing of raw materials to paying workers adequately – entails additional costs and efforts. Modifying behaviour or inculcating long term thinking is not an easy task. This chapter looks at existing behaviour both of companies and consumers. It also describes ways in which business and government policy needs to change to encourage long-term thinking in society to change lifestyles across the board.

In modern economic theory, scientific and technological progress considers as one of the relevant factors of long-term eco-nomic growth. The influence of scientific and technological progress on a particular sector of the economy appears in the creation of new products that have important competitive advantages over existing ones, or in the modification (modernization) of existing products. Often, new products based on new (innovative) technologies. However, technological superiority requires well-timed modernization of production and staff training, that is, significant financial and organizational investments. At the same time, the rejection of the transition to innovative technologies can lead to tangible losses in market positions or even to a complete cessa-tion of the organization. This model gives a possibility to make a prognosis of proceeds of enterprises with account changing of quantity of manufactured products, as well as various expenses (raw materials, transportation costs,...). An analytical approach for analyzing the influence of various parameters on the proceeds has been introduced.

Palm oil industry in Indonesia has been growing rapidly. But, unfortunately the growth is only effective on upstream industry with low value products, such that potential downstream value added are not explored proportionally. The government is therefore in the process of developing an appropriate policy to strengthen the national palm oil downstream industry. This paper proposes that an approriate policy for developing palm oil downstream industry could be derived from the maps of value chain and existing technology capability of the industry. The result recommends that government policy should emphasize on the supply of raw materials, infrastructure and utilities, as well as developing the missing value chain industry, especially ethoxylation and sulfonation.

The results of the technological assessment of new apple, cherry, black currant, red currant and gooseberry cultivars of VNIISPK breeding for the suitability for the natural food production are given. As a result, the cultivars that are promising for cultivation in raw plantings have been selected. For the production of raw materials in the juice industry, apple cultivars with a high juice yield and content of soluble solids higher than 10.0% were selected: ‘Bolotovskoye’ (Vf), ‘Candil Orlovsky’ (Vf), ‘Osipovskoye’ (3x), ‘Rozhdestvenskoye’ ((Vf + 3x), ‘Zaryanka’ (Vm), ‘Priokskoye’ ((Vf + Co), etc. Based on the long-term study of cultivars for their suitability for compote, jam and jelly, the cultivars that are most suitable for these types of processing are identified. It has been found that taking into account the daily needs of vitamins C and P as the most important antioxidants, all processed products from black currant can serve as their sources, all processed products from cherries, as well as apple juice and gooseberry marmalade can serve as a source of P-active compounds. All columnar apple cultivars as well as ‘Bolotovskoye’, ‘Rozhdestvenskoye’, ‘Veteran’, ‘Imrus’, etc. show high suitability for the production of apple chips. Cherry cultivars ‘Rovesnitsa’, ‘Putinka’, ‘Podarok Uchitelyam’ and ‘Novella’ are suitable for dried fruit. Based on the long-term studies of the technological qualities of the VNIISPK gene pool, a new generation assortment has been formed that has an optimal combination of chemical and technological indicators of fruits that meet modern technological requirements and are suitable for cultivation in the raw plantations of Central Russia.

This chapter covers the economic fundamentals of commodity markets (i.e., what shapes the evolution of the price of raw materials) in three steps. First, it covers the theories explaining why the futures curve can be upward or downward sloping, an essential element for commodity producing companies. The evolution of inventories and hedging pressures are the two dominant sources of explanation. Second, the chapter reviews the fundamentals of commodity spot prices: technologies, supply, demand, and speculation. Production costs draw the long-term evolution of prices, but demand and supply shocks can trigger substantial variations in commodity prices. Third, the chapter presents how commodity prices interact with the business cycle. Commodities are influenced by the world activity but can also have a material impact on it.

Joint sealing in jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) has been practiced throughout the world for many years as it improves the performance of concrete pavements. The infiltration of water is a common problem in concrete pavements and often increases distresses, such as faulting and pumping. For this reason, sealing the joints can help reduce water infiltration. Additionally, the infiltration of sand and small stones, aggregates, or debris into the joints can also be prevented, consequently reducing joint spalling in concrete pavements. However, it is also reported that joint sealing increases the initial cost of construction, especially if the joints need to be resealed, which leads to some additional costs. In this study, the pavement distress data was collected from the long-term pavement performance (LTPP) database for all the JPCPs sections in North Texas. The study illustrates the relative field performance in terms of spalling, faulting, roughness, and deflections of JPCP sections for both sealed and unsealed LTPP sections of North Texas.

PurposeThis paper aims to detail how a Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process can be designed to support the planning requirements of recently introduced products.Design/methodology/approachDesign science research was conducted to propose and implement an S&OP model for demand fulfillment after the introduction of new products. The results were analyzed using the CIMO (Context, Intervention, Mechanisms and Outcomes) logic, and two sets of design propositions were formulated.FindingsAn S&OP process for new products can reduce additional costs for market fulfillment by concentrating the planning efforts on new products, aligning organizational efforts, and increasing the sales and supply chain information’s update frequency.Research limitations/implicationsThe outcomes of S&OP new products were analyzed in a single organization and are limited to the contextual factors presented.Practical implicationsThis paper describes in detail how to organize an S&OP focused on new products. By considering the contextual factors and design propositions, managers can potentially increase the success of new products introduction (NPI) in their context.Originality/valueA specific S&OP process focused on new products is a viable solution and could co-exist with a traditional S&OP process. Moreover, we identified six contextual factors that influence the outcomes of the S&OP new products.

The basic information about functional mixtures is outlined, options for compositions and recommendations for use in baking in mass production are proposed. The characteristic of microbiological, physical and chemical indicators is given, and the results of toxicological studies of dry functional mixtures with fruit and berry powders are given. High-calorie, medium-calorie, and low-calorie composite mixtures have been developed for the centralized production of yeast dough. Dry functional mixtures can be produced according to regulatory documents: TU 9161-004-51926638-11 and TI to TU 9161-004-51926638-11. A patent of the Russian Federation No. 2602629 was obtained for dry functional mixtures with fruit and berry powders. The technological scheme for obtaining a dry functional mixture consists of the following operations: sifting, dosing of prescription components in predetermined proportions: dry egg-milk mixture in the amount of 56.2-61.6% sugar – 20.0-24.3% and salt – 14.1-17.2%. Xanthan (1.06-2.43%) or guar (4.25-5.30%) and fruit and berry powders (1.0-1.5%) are introduced as additional raw materials. Then mixing is carried out, preparation for implementation. The resulting mixture is portioned and packaged in paper bags. Fruit and berry powders were prepared from rose hips, aronia, nettle, bananas, apples and carrots. According to microbiological studies, the degree of contamination during storage during the year corresponds to SanPiN 2.3.2.1078-01, which makes it possible to produce dry functional mixtures with fruit and berry powders for long-term storage. They can be stored in a dry, well-ventilated room in compliance with sanitary rules, with a relative humidity of 65-70% and a temperature of 18-20 °C from 0 to 12 months. It was found that during storage for 12 months. in hermetically sealed paper bags, no powder quality changes were observed. Bakery products made using these mixtures can be recommended for medical, preventive and gerontological nutrition.
