Research has shown that thoughts about death influence sexual cognitions and some media choices. The present study tested the hypothesis that thoughts about death may affect individuals’ tendency to select or avoid entertainment media programming containing sexual material. In two experiments, thoughts about death (mortality salience [MS]) were manipulated before college undergraduates expressed interest in viewing television shows and movies with varying amounts of sexual content. In both studies, MS was associated with greater overall interest in sexual media content. Although terror management theory would indicate that sexual worldview should moderate this effect, this was not observed to be the case. In addition, MS was not found to affect interest in other types of highly engaging media content including violent and dramatic content. Limitations regarding generalizability are discussed. Results suggest that MS increases a preference for sexual media content, and that this occurs for individuals with diverse sexual values systems. This is discussed in terms of implications for terror management theory and cognitive models of media influence.

This study uses constructivism paradigm, qualitative approaches and case study methods. Data collection techniques used are passive participatory observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. The results showed that media relations planning was carried out through eight activities, namely, mapping service programs, forming personal relationships, managing relationships, providing services to the media, providing media facilities, conducting news coordination processes, conducting journalistic training, and conducting media relations activities such as personal contact or press calls, press releases, press conferences, press interviews, press gatherings, media facilitators, media visits, and entertainment media. Implementation is carried out using persuasive communication, coordination with related parties, content management and referring to agreed rules. Evaluation as the final stage of the media relations process was carried out based on four activities namely internal briefings, asking for clarification of errors made by the media, collaborating to make media teams monetize, and updating media databases. The media relations process to support success in achieving publications through this informal approach is felt to be effective because the results of the media relations process are in accordance with what the Purwakarta government hopes, but it is less efficient because it requires an indefinite amount of time.

Sensation and perception refers to different stages in the processing of stimuli that influence consumer behaviors. The five senses involved in sensation and perception—touch, smell, taste, hearing, and vision—have important implications for marketers. Consumers often make inferences about the quality and performance of products on the basis of sensory cues. Product packaging can also be an important cue from which consumers can derive information and make evaluations about the performance of the product. This chapter also discusses non-conscious processing of environmental cues and how unconsciously perceived stimuli affect a variety of consumer behaviors. The research presented in this chapter on sensory cues and unconscious processes can help managers to develop effective sensory marketing strategies.

This article analyses hunting television shows selected from three cable channels dedicated to outdoor programming. Despite this genre’s long standing and its influence on mainstream spin-offs, such as Duck Dynasty (2012–present), almost no research examines hunting television. This study pays specific attention to commercial sponsorship and the depiction of killing. Against claims that these shows are designed to educate viewers about conservation, safety and sporting ethics, we find that hunting television is oriented primarily around product marketing and ‘killing on camera’. These findings illustrate the need to examine the confluence of consumerism, entertainment media and hunting culture.

This article reassesses the relationships of the Central Intelligence Agency and Department of Defense with the American entertainment industry. Both governmental institutions present their relationships as modest in scale, benign in nature, passive, and concerned with historical and technical accuracy rather than politics. The limited extant commentary reflects this reassuring assessment. However, we build on a patchy reassessment begun at the turn of the 21st century, using a significant new set of documents acquired through the Freedom of Information Act. We identify three key facets of the state-entertainment relationship that are under-emphasized or absent from the existing commentary and historical record: 1. The withholding of available data from the public; 2. The scale of the work; and 3. The level of politicization. As such, the article emphasizes a need to pay closer attention to the deliberate propaganda role played by state agencies in promoting the US national security state through entertainment media in western societies.
