The internet of things (IoT) is expected to influence both architecture and infrastructure of current and future smart cities vision. Thus, the requirement and effectiveness of making cities smarter demands suitable provision of secure and efficient communication networks between IoT networking devices. Trust-based routing protocols play an important role in IoT for secure information exchange and communications between IoT networking elements. Thus, this chapter presents the foundation of trust-based protocols from social science to IoT for secure smart city environments. The chapter outlines and discusses the key ideas, notions, and theories that may help the reader to understand the current status and the possible future trends of trust-based protocols in IoT networks for smart cities. The chapter also discusses the implications, requirements, and future research challenges of trust-based protocols in IoT for smart cities.

In the recent years, developments growth have been rising in utilizing of recent technologies; Smart cities have been furnished with various electronic devices concentrated on the Internet of Things (IoT) to be more smarter than before. The Internet of Things is empowered by various emerging technologies such as smart cameras, sensors, wireless communication devices etc. Smart cities are huge systems connected with countless sub-systems, and these systems are depending on the electricity to move the human, things, and data to share information. Without electric power and Internet of Things, the smart city cannot be achieved and services cannot be provided. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive concept of IoT, the smart city as well as the relationship of Smart Cities to IoT. Moreover, an extensive review of the relationship of IoT to the smart city discussed with few instances of services provided by the government using IoT technologies for the citizens. Therefore the objects and applications which come under the IoT technology that can be used to meet the objective of having a smart city. In this paper, a thorough literature on the concept of IoT with Smart City and a brief comparison of it in terms of services, challenges, and issues are discussed. Also the discussion on the issues faced by service providers with regards to technologies used to equip the citizens with up to date services.

This paper presents and discusses the role of the Internet of Things (IoT) and crowdsourcing in constructing smart cities. The literature review shows an important and increasing concern of the scientific community for these three issues and their association as support for urban development. Based on an extensive literature review, the paper first presents the smart city concept, emphasizing smart city architecture and the role of data in smart city solutions. The second part presents the Internet of Things, focusing on IoT technology, the use of IoT in smart city applications, and security. Finally, the paper presents crowdsourcing with particular attention to mobile crowdsourcing and its role in smart cities. The paper shows that IoT and crowdsourcing have a crucial role in two fundamental layers of smart city applications, namely, the data collection and services layers. Since these two layers ensure the connection between the physical and digital worlds, they constitute the central pillars of smart city projects. The literature review also shows that the smart city development still requires stronger cooperation between the smart city technology-centered research, mainly based on the IoT, and the smart city citizens-centered research, mainly based on crowdsourcing. This cooperation could beneficiate in recent developments in the field of crowdsensing that combines IoT and crowdsourcing.

To provide secure and reliable services using the internet of things (IoT) in the smart cities/villages is a challenging and complex issue. A high throughput and resilient services are required to process vast data generated by the smart city/villages that felicitates to run the applications of smart city. To provide security and privacy a scalable blockchain (BC) mechanism is a necessity to integrate the scalable ledger and transactions limit in the BC. In this paper, we investigated the available solutions to improve its scalability and efficiency. However, most of the algorithms are not providing the better solution to achieve scalability for the smart city data. Here, proposed and implemented a hybrid approach to improve the scalability and rate of transactions on BC using practical Byzantine fault tolerance and decentralized public key algorithms. The proposed Normachain is compares our results with the existing model. The results show that the transaction rate got improved by 6.43% and supervision results got improved by 17.78%.

Smart cities provide citizens with smart and advanced services to improve their quality of life. However, it has been observed that the collection, storage, processing, and analysis of heterogeneous data that are usually borne by citizens will bear certain difficulties. The development of the Internet of Things, cloud computing, social media, and other Industry 4.0 influencers pushed technology into a smart society’s framework, bringing potential vulnerabilities to sensor data, services, and smart city applications. These vulnerabilities lead to data security problems. We propose a decentralized data management system for smart and secure transportation that uses blockchain and the Internet of Things in a sustainable smart city environment to solve the data vulnerability problem. A smart transportation mobility system demands creating an interconnected transit system to ensure flexibility and efficiency. This article introduces prior knowledge and then provides a Hyperledger Fabric-based data architecture that supports a secure, trusted, smart transportation system. The simulation results show the balance between the blockchain mining time and the number of blocks created. We also use the average transaction delay evaluation model to evaluate the model and to test the proposed system’s performance. The system will address residents’ and authorities’ security challenges of the transportation system in smart, sustainable cities and lead to better governance.

The article investigates scientific and practical issues of transport logistics; the conceptual and methodological mechanisms of formation of the “Smart City” strategy are considered and its main business processes are interpreted; the author’s description of the Internet of Things as a high-tech network of deterministic mechanisms, logistic algorithms, business processes and technical and technological devices, interconnected with each other and with the external socio-economic environment is presented; the international experience of the formation and functioning of transport and logistics business processes of “smart cities” was critically rethought; reducing costs, ensuring socio-economic growth and sustainability, while improving the quality of services and the life of citizens, are justified as fundamental tasks of smart city projects; studied the socio-economic objectives of the Smart City of St. Petersburg project, in particular, the formation of a list of measures to optimize business processes, the creation of an external economic environment that would facilitate the attraction of non-budgetary funding sources for the implementation of projects, the development of a methodology for monitoring indicators of socio-economic development and territorial planning of St. Petersburg; identified the main socio-economic advantages of the introduction of smart parking in relation to the infrastructures of smart cities and their residents; empirically confirmed the effectiveness of the implementation of an intelligent parking management system based on the “Internet of Things” technology in the social and economic conditions of St. Petersburg; the characteristic of transport and logistics advantages of the strategy “Smart city of St. Petersburg” is provided.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a system that integrates different devices and technologies, removing the necessity of human intervention. This enables the capacity of having smart (or smarter) cities around the world. By hosting different technologies and allowing interactions between them, the internet of things has spearheaded the development of smart city systems for sustainable living, increased comfort and productivity for citizens. The IoT for Smart Cities has many different domains and draws upon various underlying systems for its operation. In this paper, we provide a holistic coverage of the Internet of Things in Smart Cities. We start by discussing the fundamental components that make up the IoT based Smart City landscape followed by the technologies that enable these domains to exist in terms of architectures utilized, networking technologies used as well as the Artificial Algorithms deployed in IoT based Smart City systems. This is then followed up by a review of the most prevalent practices and applications in various Smart City domains. Lastly, the challenges that deployment of IoT systems for smart cities encounter along with mitigation measures.

Smart cities play a vital role in the growth of a nation. In recent years, several countries have made huge investments in developing smart cities to offer sustainable living. However, there are some challenges to overcome in smart city development, such as traffic and transportation management, energy and water distribution and management, air quality and waste management monitoring, etc. The capabilities of the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) can help to achieve some goals of smart cities, and there are proven examples from some cities like Singapore, Copenhagen, etc. However, the adoption of AI and the IoT in developing countries has some challenges. The analysis of challenges hindering the adoption of AI and the IoT are very limited. This study aims to fill this research gap by analyzing the causal relationships among the challenges in smart city development, and contains several parts that conclude the previous scholars’ work, as well as independent research and investigation, such as data collection and analysis based on DEMATEL. In this paper, we have reviewed the literature to extract key challenges for the adoption of AI and the IoT. These helped us to proceed with the investigation and analyze the adoption status. Therefore, using the PRISMA method, 10 challenges were identified from the literature review. Subsequently, determination of the causal inter-relationships among the key challenges based on expert opinions using DEMATEL is performed. This study explored the driving and dependent power of the challenges, and causal relationships between the barriers were established. The results of the study indicated that “lack of infrastructure (C1)”, ”insufficient funds (C2)”, “cybersecurity risks (C3)”, and “lack of trust in AI, IoT” are the causal factors that are slowing down the adoption of AI and IoT in smart city development. The inter-relationships between the various challenges are presented using a network relationship map, cause–effect diagram. The study’s findings can help regulatory bodies, policymakers, and researchers to make better decisions to overcome the challenges for developing sustainable smart cities.

The advancement and development of proficient technologies that exploit sensors and things connected with the internet respectively along with the progress of the associated protocols has greatly encouraged the growth of applications that are basically dependent on the sensors for observing the happenings. Multitudes of such applications have been designed to have an improved discernment of the environment and sort out the exigent circumstances. The prevailing internet of things developed for identifying the exigent situations have restrictions when a wide space of smart cities are taken into consideration, as it has to employ many monitoring variables or even over burden the regular sensor that are engaged in monitoring. So the proposed method in the paper aims in developing a three-layered exigent incident alarm system utilizing the sensors considering the various data’s gathered from the sensors and the geo-positioning system as input. The system modelled identifies and indicate the exigent situations using an alarm based on the incidents recognized and as well as the prior knowledge of the affected areas hazard’s. By this the modularized and flexible awareness of the emergency events are delivered as per the details obtained from the smart city scenario. The evaluation of the proposed model proved its potentiality in assisting the progress in the creating awareness on the exigent situations using the internet of things.
