Environmental Sustainability in Large Firms and SMEs in Cyprus

The chapter begins by defining corporate social responsibility and explains its close relationship with environmental sustainability. Then discussion focuses on defining and explaining the underlying principles of environmental sustainability and examining it from a marketing orientation perspective arguing that a strong marketing orientation has the potential to motivate businesses to engage in environmentally sustainable business practices. The chapter then provides some empirical evidence derived from an exploratory case study carried out in Cyprus aimed at revealing the perceptions and experiences of managers of four large and four SMEs regarding the practice of environmental sustainability.

Business is obligatory to society as it flourishes in the very social eco-system. Socially responsible, ethically upright and environmentally sustainable business solutions will endure spatially and temporally. The governmental initiatives to put corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the core business agenda acknowledge the policy engagement in promoting socially responsible business in a country. The present article is the outcome of a country-specific study examining the CSR mandates in a historical perspective in India in general and the domain of Companies Act 2013 in particular. The approach of the study is desk research. The study has observed that the recent mandate of India in this regard is to align the CSR engagements with corporate performance through a process of internalisation and institutionalisation.

Implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is used later to improve the image of the company and its business existence. Instead of CSR to empower people its delude people with a profit motive. Islamic CSR is that CSR refers to business practices that have an ethical responsibility Islamically, companies incorporate Islamic norms characterized by sincerity commitment in maintaining the social contract in its business practices in halal lawful. This study aimed to reveal the implementation of Islamic CSR PT. Bumi Lingga Pertiwi Gresik.This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive case study method. The selections of informant are using purposive sampling method. Data collection was conducted by semi-structured interviews and documentation. Analysis of the data using descriptive method.The results of this study indicate that PT. Bumi Lingga Pertiwi has implemented Islamic CSR based on unity, caliphate, justice and broterhood by creating and running a cooperation agreement in accordance with sharia corridor, provide good service to customers, act fairly and avoid discrimination, provide assistance to the poor in the villages around, helping the development of education and worship, as well as participate protecting the environment by way of planting trees together.

Peningkatan kunjungan wisatawan ke suatu destinasi wisata selain membawa manfaat positif juga meninggalkan dampak negatif. Peran manajer sangat signifikan untuk memastikan operasional perusahaan pengelola destinasi wisata dapat mendukung perekonomian masyarakat lokal dan tidak merusak lingkungan, sehingga terwujud praktik bisnis berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengeksplorasi bagaimana corporate social responsibility (CSR) dipraktikkan untuk dapat mewujudkan pariwisata berbasis masyarakat berkelanjutan. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian, penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus dilakukan di kawasan wisata Monkey Forest Ubud, Gianyar, Bali. Berlandaskan pada konsep CSR dan pariwisata berbasis masyarakat, data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara kemudian dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan bantuan software NVivo12. Penelitian ini mengindikasikan bahwa Monkey Forest Ubud mengimplementasikan berbagai bentuk CSR yang memungkinkan masyarakat lokal berpartisipasi penuh dalam operasional kawasan wisata dan memperoleh manfaatnya secara langsung. Penelitian ini memberikan inspirasi mengenai bagaimana suatu destinasi/kawasan wisata dapat mengimplementasikan CSR untuk memastikan terwujudnya bisnis berkelanjutan dan pada saat bersamaan berkontribusi bagi pengembangan pariwisata berbasis masyarakat berkelanjutan.   Increasing tourist arrivals in a touristic area, besides bringing positive impacts also leaving negative footprints. The role of managers is significant to ensure that the business operational supports the local community and preserve the environment, so as sustainable business can be attained. This study aims at exploring how corporate social responsibility (CSR) is practiced to develop sustainable community-based tourism. To address the research objective, a qualitative case study was conducted at Ubud Monkey Forest, Gianyar, Bali. Guided by the concept of CSR and community-based tourism, data was collected through interviews and analyzed qualitatively with the help of NVivo12 software. This research indicates that Ubud Monkey Forest implements various CSR activities that allow the local community to participate in the operational of the forest and obtain the benefits from the operational. This research exemplifies how a tourist destination could implement CSR to ensure business sustainability and at the same time contribute to the development of sustainable community-based tourism.

This study aims to understand the implementation of mosque-based empowerment through CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) funds in improving the economic benefit of the people around the mosque. This study uses a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study strategy. The object of this study is Ummad Action Program, which was initiated in 2017 by the Financial Services Authority (OJK). The results of this study are that each partner knows and agrees with the background, goals, and benchmarks of program success. However, each partner has not been optimal in carrying out their duties and responsibilities. Moreover, the success of the Ummad Action Program can be assessed in terms of the benefits felt by the congregation, including the category of success with several evaluations.Keywords: Empowerment, Corporate Social Responsibility, Mosque, Financial Services Authority (OJK).

Intellectual capital (IC) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) provide a strong link between the enterprise and stakeholders. These strategic approaches are responsible in value formation for better financial performance. This study investigates the mediating effects of corporate financial performance on the relationship between IC components (ICs) and CSR of firms from the food industry in Asia. We analyzed 308 firm-year observations of 44 listed firms from 2011 to 2017. The results of this study provided mixed findings regarding the effects of ICs and CSR. In addition, results vary from the disaggregated effects of each IC component on environmental, social, and governance pillars. The results also indicate that the combination of accounting and market-based estimates of financial performance was found to be significant mediating factor to explain the phenomenon which varies per ICs and dimensions of CSR. Lastly, the implications for sustainable business practices and investments in knowledge-based resources in the food industry are elaborated.

The debate in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in achieving Sustainable Competitive Advantage (SCA) was ongoing from the beginning of the twenty first century. The role of stakeholders and CSR in achieving sustainable business has increased in recent years. The purpose of this qualitative study was to achieve deeper understanding about the CSR initiative that may contribute to achieve SCA for the company. A single case study with three unit of analysis was used to achieve a deeper understanding on how CSR in planned, aligned and implemented in the noodle companies in Nepal and how those initiative may contribute to the company in the form of SCA and to community in the form of societal development.The stakeholder theory was used as theoretical framework with semi structured interview as data collection method. For the data collection purpose, two groups of stakeholders were interviewed. The first group was internal stakeholders including managerial level employees and second group consisted of external stakeholders including suppliers, customers, local community members and environmental activist. The findings of the study clearly indicated that, the strategic approach to CSR contributes to company in the form of SCA and helps in fulfilling the expectations of the local communities. The findings indicated that, stakeholder management is a key tool in today’s business environment and strategic CSR initiatives contributes in sustainable business and mutual cooperation between company and stakeholders.Int. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to the practice of the corporates returning the favour to society in the form of programs that benefit the less privileged members of the community where the business is situated. Many of its program are social and environmental in nature whereas internally companies could also show its concern to issues of human rights and employees’ welfare as part of its CSR activities. In this way companies are encouraged to promote socially conscious business practices and provide funds for its continuance. In other words CSR is a company’s commitment to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner whilst balancing the interest of diverse stakeholders. It requires companies to take a holistic look at their operations and identify all possible impacts as well as positive contributions. This article discusses the benefits of having a whistleblowing policy that would be able to foster an ethical environment for employees and build their confidence towards the management in terms of reputation and the goodwill of the organisation. In fact consumers will be confident with an organisation that is concerned with its employees’ welfare and willing to take the task of implementing such policy in good faith.

In the aftermath of the financial and economic crisis, and as a result of consumer pressure, enterprises are increasingly expected to evolve strategies of corporate social responsibility (CSR) into sustainable business practices to create and sustain shared values. In such, large food retailers are intensifying their efforts to develop CSR initiatives that are able to achieve economic, environmental and social goals simultaneously, both upstream and downstream, in their supply chain. Recently, they have focused on managing closer relationships with customers by supporting the local communities to which their customers belong. Two case studies, Tesco PLC and Carrefour, are used to show how new local initiatives, fair miles/local buying and “social stores,” respectively, can be introduced as part of an emerging sustainable strategic view of large retailers. The descriptive study reveals an increasing interest of some large retailers in promoting sustainable projects that aim to entrench sustainability into their operations.
