Green Information Technology (GIT) refers to using information technology in ways that help to reduce environmental impacts including the use of energy more efficiently and reducing waste. To date, however, few studies attempt to provide a holistic understanding of GIT adoption in developing countries, which GIT plays a significant role in achieving a sustainable environment and economic performance. This paper explores the practices, processes and enablers in GIT adoption within the Philippines Business Process Outsourcing Industry (BPO). The authors used the revelatory multiple-case study as a research approach in understanding GIT adoption in BPO organizations. They found five areas of GIT adoption covering IT procurement, IT applications as low carbon enabler, working environment, data center and IT end of life management. Essentially, strategy and governance, processes, structure, people, technology support, and measurement and improvement enabled GIT adoption in BPO organizations. The authors further found that BPO organizations have the strong long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.

New information technology implementations, as major modifications to existing ones, bring about changes in the work environment of individuals that trigger an important adaptation process. Extant research on the adaptation process individuals go through when a new IT is implemented in their working environment is rather limited. Furthermore, variance theories and models useful to explain IT adoption and use are not well suited to study the dynamics underlying the adaptation process. Coping theory, because it links antecedents, adaptation behaviors, and outcomes altogether, provides a rich lens through which we can study individuals’ IT-related adaptation process. A better understanding of this process will enable researchers and practitioners to understand and predict IT acceptance and related behaviors and thus to better manage them. This chapter presents coping theory, its underlying assumptions and inherent components, discusses its application, highlights the complementarities with existing models and theories currently used in IS research, and provides several avenues for future research in this area.

Green information technology is resource efficient and effective consumption through the use of IT infrastructures to address environmental sustainability. This study aims to understand the level of awareness and practices of IT professionals towards GIT in organizations. A survey questionnaire was used, the study found that participants have a high awareness and practices of Green IT covering the efficient use of computing resources, energy conservation in an office environment, responsible disposal of electronic wastes, and demonstrate an individual contribution and commitment to GIT adoption practices in organizations. The study also found that male IT professionals have better awareness of GIT in organizations. The awareness and practices of IT professionals in GIT offers direction for organizations to strategically integrate GIT within their core business objectives and activities to attain environmental sustainability. Practical and theoretical implications are presented.

Abstract Background Information technology (IT) plays an important role in nursing practice. Hence, nurses’ experiences and viewpoints about IT integration into healthcare help improve nurses’ adoption of IT. This study aimed to explore the nurses’ experiences and viewpoints about the benefits of IT integration and adoption in healthcare. Methods This study was conducted with a qualitative research approach. Participants included 14 nurses from four hospitals affiliated to a large medical university in Iran, who were selected using a purposive sampling method. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the conventional content analysis of Lundman and Graneheim. Results Six categories in the study reflected the nurses’ experiences and viewpoints about the benefits of integrating IT into health care. These categories included improving the quality and efficiency of medical services and care, facilitating the communication management in the technological environment, improving information documentation, management, and monitoring, improving resource management, improving management performance and policymaking, and facilitating pathways of organizational and professional growth. Conclusions Lessons learned in this study can help overcoming the barriers of IT adoption, and developing appropriate strategies to familiarize nurses with the benefits of IT in healthcare settings. Healthcare managers are recommended to investigate the experiences of nurses with IT in their hospitals and organize courses to orient hesitant nurses toward adopting IT.

The importance of sustainable development has been widely recognized by people, society, governments, and the business world. Green information technology (IT) has therefore become one of the latest considerations to improve the environmental sustainability of a business. Yet, as important as this term is, it is being used in so many different ways that it might lose meaning altogether. It is important to clarify the different meanings of green IT to understand how to pursue it better as a business, economic and social objective. Four different perspectives on green IT, and the benefits and barriers of green IT strategy adoption are reviewed and discussed in this article.

The Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry accounts for 15% of the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) in the Philippines annually. The BPO industry continuously improves the economic growth and performance due to the increasing investments on this sector. Given the role of the BPO sector, business activities involved on its operations share environmental impacts on carbon emission, disposal of wastes and increasing energy consumption that contributes to the environmental degradation. In this, the emergence of Green Information Technology (IT) adoption is aimed at minimizing the environmental impacts of business activities while balancing economic performance. This paper is an attempt to provide the current state of Green IT adoption in a BPO firm. The authors apply qualitative approach in collecting, analyzing and interpreting the data. The findings revealed that Green IT adoption in the BPO firm is on its emergence, Office environment practices is the most evident implementation of Green IT whereas technological factors has strong influence to the BPO firm to adopt Green IT. Thus, Green IT adoption in the BPO firm is part of their long-term objective and commitment towards sustainable business and environmental.

This preliminary survey investigates and validates the measurement model of factors influencing decision makers’ intentions to adopt Green information technology (Green-IT) in manufacturing sectors in Nigeria. The Norm Activation Model (NAM) and Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) were used to explore the factors that could influence decision-makers’ intention in adopting Green-IT. Using constructs from the NAM and TPB, this survey proposes a model for identified behavioural factors. A quantitative research approach with a data collection and analysis plan using a cross-sectional survey design was adopted. A sample of 30 decision-makers in the top three manufacturing industries in Nigeria was selected using a purposive sampling procedure for participation in the study. The data collected was analysed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) to test the proposed model. The model was validated in two phases: (i) Initial Measurement Model and (ii) Modified Measurement Model. Findings revealed that Green-IT Attitude, Subjective Norm, Ascription of Responsibility, Awareness of Consequences, Personal Norm, Environmental Concern, and Perceive Behavioural Control were the key elements of the behavioural intention model to adopt Green-IT, with 31 indicators having factor loadings of >0.5, adequate internal consistency reliability, CR > 0.7, and Cronbach’s Alpha, >0.7. The result revealed convergent validity, and acceptable discriminant validity was assessed using AVE > 0.5 and Fornell-lacker’s criterion. The results from the full-scale study would contribute to developing a context-specific model to examine Green-IT adoption in developing nations.

Green Information Technology (IT) has emerged as a crucial topic for environmentally and sustainability development. At the same time, Green IT impacts the organisation as well. Studies show there is a lack of a proposed framework in the Green IT literature. As the IT industry is one of the significant sectors supporting the Green Technology Policy, this study objective is to identify the factors rendered in the Green IT adoption and examine the factors that drive the adoption of Green IT in Malaysia. The study referred to the case study to show the most important factors rendered in Green IT adoption in the public sector and the private sector in Malaysia. A qualitative method was applied through a semi-structured interview by using open-ended questions as a guideline with five organisations from the public sector and the private sector. This study prioritises the explanation building as a specific approach to analysis. Results show that there are five factors rendered in Green IT adoption in Malaysia: environmental factor, cost factor, organisational factor, technological factor, and business opportunity factor. This study benefits policymaker, organisations, and other researchers to support Malaysia’s pledge to reduce its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission intensity of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by up to 45% by 2030.

Green IT is a resource efficient and effective consumption through the use of information technology with minimal or no impact to the environment. This study is an initial attempt to explore on the Green IT perspective of higher education students in the Philippines. A survey questionnaire was deployed to determine the students' awareness and practices towards Green IT. The results suggest that students have an average level of awareness and unsatisfactory practices in Green IT. The results indicate the need to integrate Green IT in higher education curriculum to raise awareness among students and engage them in sustainable use of computing resources. Practical and research implications are discussed.
