Blockchain Technology in Higher Education

Blockchain, which is also called a distributed ledger technology (DLT), is an emerging and ever advancing technology having flourishing potential for nourishing and revolutionizing higher education. It stems in decentralization and distributed learning with characteristics of permanence of records, pursuit and transfer of knowledge, authority of institutions, and reliability of teaching and learning. These characteristics of blockchain attract educational institutions particularly the higher education institutions to adopt it. However, in spite of all potential and benefits of blockchain technology, the higher education stakeholders currently seem to be less aware of the social benefits and educational/instructional potential of blockchain technology. It can be addressed through proper advocacy and campaign. The complete chapter will demonstrate possibilities of blockchain technologies in higher education along with its issues and challenges.

Higher educational institutions are widening participation through the introduction of new programs, using different approaches to deliver learning so that many people can have access to education. With the growing number of students in our higher educational institutions, coupled with learners who are working and by virtue of their job commitments cannot do traditional face-to-face education, using information technology (IT) to support lessons in higher education institutions has become very laudable. The introduction and use of technology have brought changes in the way we teach and support students in our higher education institutions. This, therefore, calls for effective IT leaders who will be able to motivate, inspire, and meet the learning needs of the diverse students in our institutions while improving teaching and learning. The IT leaders should not only be individuals who can only lead the change crusade but should be able to manage the change process.

The growing changes brought about by new concepts and new technologies, such as Industry 4.0, have demanded that educational institutions seek new teaching and learning methodologies, as well as new resources that can contribute to the training of the future engineer. This chapter demonstrates some practices adopted in the process of training the future engineer in a university center in the interior of the state of São Paulo through the use of the CDIO initiative. The results presented confirm the importance and necessity of changes in the teaching and learning process in higher education institutions.

Dados los tiempos que corren en todos los ámbitos de nuestro contexto social, económico, cultural y por supuesto tecnológico, la universidad vive un momento en el que debe apostar por innovaciones en la dirección de adaptarse a los cambios y dar respuesta a las necesidades del entorno; siempre en aras de sobrevivir como institución y seguir siendo referente primario de nuestra sociedad. El problema es que debe cambiar, pero sin que antes se hayan clarificados conceptos básicos que le dan su razón de ser y la fundamentan.En este trabajo pretendemos abundar en los modelos más representativos de cambio institucional que se han adoptado en la implementación de TIC en la universidad, para posteriormente hacer una reflexión acerca de cómo esos modelos y la forma que han adoptado en la práctica han creado no pocas paradojas relacionadas con las necesidades de cambio, las formas que adopta dicho cambio y el futuro que puede tener.  AbstractFast expansion of ICT in every side of our society has increased the pressure in traditional higher education institutions to become modern organizations, and has modified the social perception about the need of using new possibilities and models of teaching and learning including ICT (Technology Enhanced Learning). Unfortunately, the general awareness is universities know very well they have to change but they don’t know in which direction they have to do it. Therefore, they have to clarify basic concepts about their reason for being and their basic principles.On this work we will present a first analysis of the most representative models to implement ICT in Universities that institutions around the world have used. From this models and analysing trends around them, we propose some reflexions about how practices have created many paradoxes around the change related to ICT and higher education: how this change could be, how this change already is, and how can we plan better the future of these changes.

Abstract This research explores blockchain as a competitive advantage (CA) for higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Philippines. The respondents’ awareness of the relevance of blockchain use was also tested. The researcher aims to verify if blockchain is a foundational technology to be implemented in academe. Theoretical framework was formulated based on the knowledge procurement cycle and distributed learning ledger. The researcher proposes that conceptual framework, centered on blockchain (Ethereum), will enhance recordkeeping in education. Frequency, percentage, and weighted mean determined the degree of relevance of blockchain as CA of Philippine HEIs. One-way ANOVA determined respondents’ significant relationship (SR) with regard to blockchain awareness and identified SR of blockchain as CA over other colleges in terms of cost and differentiation. The results showed that students were most aware of the relevance of blockchain while professors were least aware. Both null hypotheses were accepted. There is no SR on the respondents’ awareness on the use of blockchain. Respondents considered technology relevant and a foundational technology in recordkeeping. The research proposes EduChain Activity Flow Model to enhance recordkeeping in the academe. It will offer ample job opportunities to students in the field of blockchain. Also, the researcher suggests that administrators may incorporate blockchain training as part of faculty development. A responsabilidade socioambiental é um conceito complementar e crescente em discussões, tanto no âmbito organizacional quanto educacional. A pesquisa é de caráter bibliográfico, cuja coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de revisão da literatura corrente sobre o tema estudado em periódicos como Google Acadêmico, Scielo e Capes, bem como em sites das próprias instituições de ensino objeto do estudo: Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (UEMA), Faculdade Pitágoras, Centro Universitário do Maranhão (CEUMA), Faculdade ISL WYDEN, Universidade Dom Bosco (UNDB). O objetivo geral buscou identificar o impacto das ações de responsabilidade socioambiental para as comunidades circunvizinhas das respectivas instituições de ensino superior analisadas e os objetivos específicos visavam explorar ainda mais a problemática, por meio dos seguintes pontos: identificar as ações realizadas e fomentadas pelas instituições de ensino superior no âmbito da responsabilidade socioambiental; verificar a participação dos discentes nas ações realizadas e analisar os efeitos gerados nas comunidades beneficiadas. Foram identificadas ações sociais e projetos voltados para o tema de responsabilidade social e ambiental em todas as universidades comparadas, porém em algumas o grau de envolvimento dos discentes e da comunidade externa é mínimo, como no caso das universidades públicas analisadas, enquanto nas faculdades particulares o envolvimento da comunidade acadêmica e externa, em geral, é muito maior e contínuo. O impacto gerado nas comunidades é perceptível por meio das ações de responsabilidade social desenvolvidas pelas instituições, especialmente pela Universidade CEUMA, ISL Wyden e Faculdade Pitágoras, que englobam a participação ativa de seus discentes nas ações promovidas, maximizando o papel da aprendizagem prática e formação cívica.AbstractSocio-environmental responsibility is a complementary and growing concept indiscussions, both in the organizational and educational spheres. The general objective sought to identify the impact of social and environmental responsibility actions for the surrounding communities of the respective higher education institutions analyzed and the specific objectives aimed to further explore the problem, through the following points: to identify the actions carried out and promoted by educational institutions superior in the scope of socio-environmental responsibility; verify the participation of students in the actions carried out and analyze the effects generated in the benefited communities. Social actions and projects focused on the theme of social and environmental responsibility were identified in all the universities compared, howeverin some the degree of involvement of students and the external community isminimal, as in the case of the public universities analyzed, while in private colleges the The involvement of the academic and external community, in general, is much greater and continuous. The impact generated in the communities is noticeable through the social responsibility actions developed by the institutions, especially by the CEUMA University, ISL Wyden and Faculdade Pitágoras, which include the active participation of their students in the actions promoted, maximizing the role of practical learning and civic training.

E-learning expands options for teaching and learning using technology. This nomenclature has been solidly in use for the last ten years. The expansive and ever fertile frontier of e-learning—a term used interchangeably with distance and online learning—has become standard fare as an educational delivery solution designed to enhance knowledge and performance. Many educational institutions, corporate enterprises and other entities are utilizing web-based teaching and learning methodologies to deliver education either partially or wholly online using electronic platforms. The learning value chain, including management and delivery, has created multimodal systems, content, and processes to increase accessibility, measurability, and cost effectiveness by infusing advanced learning techniques, such as adaptive learning or communities of practice, among students, employee groups, and lifelong learners. It is interesting to note that e-learning encapsulates internet based courseware and all other asynchronous and synchronous learning, as well as other capabilities for supporting learning experiences. Student success and advancements in technology are now inextricably linked as a result of higher education institutions embracing and offering e-learning options. The absence of direct instructor guidance makes distance learning particularly difficult for some students. Certain students struggle with the lack of guidance inherent in online learning and the requisite need to work independently. In particular, the lack of high touch strategies in e-learning often leads students to drop or fail courses. While some students struggle to remain engaged in technology-enabled learning, technology is often the vehicle for keeping these same students on task. There are a variety of electronic tools designed to augment online learning and keep online learners on task. Podcasts, for example, can be easily downloaded, then played back on a student’s media player or mobile device at a later date. The student is not tied to a computer, which results in a more comprehensive learning experience. In many cases, e-learning has become a very lucrative and desirable marketplace for higher education institutions. The business case for e-learning is a clarion call for tight integration among business, human resources, and knowledge and performance management. Hence, it is incumbent upon educational institutions to instill approaches that focus on the learner, learning, and improved performance, more so than the tools and technology. Of further importance is the need for higher education institutions to provide stratagems for developing and supporting caring online relationships, individualized student environments, collaboration, communication, and e-learning culture. Ultimately, institutions should measure not only improved business and performance, but also improved student online learning aptitudes (more self-motivated, self-directed, and self-assessed learning).

This chapter focuses on the critical analysis of evidence of higher education improvement strategies in improving teaching and learning in higher education institutions. Several higher education improvement strategies such as preparation for accreditation and student learning assessment has been utilized in the area of teaching and learning in higher education institutions with diverse outcomes. Overall and despite some recorded successes, there still exist some situations where improvement strategies create challenges and conflicts in the institutions as a result of the improvement strategies not serving their defined purpose. Some of these challenges are ineffective teacher professional development initiatives and lack of specifically developed programs designed for specific students' needs. In order to resolve higher education improvement challenges, decision makers in higher educational institutions must be willing to involve key stakeholders in designing the right approach to quality assurance in higher educational institutions.

There are following prerequisites outlined in this article: worldwide democratization trend; complexity of structures of social systems; growing needs in human capital development; autonomy of national higher education institutions; civilizational problem of Ukraine in national elite. Conceptual problems on a road to real democracy in higher education institutions were actualized and analyzed. Determined and characterized three models of higher education institutions activities based on the level of democratization needs of their social environment as: negative, neutral and favorable.
